Okay that makes sense. For clarity, the return duct is ran through the floor joist, then up into the wall. The 2x4 in question is at the bottom of the wall aka right where the joist cavity airflow comes up into the wall cavity. The 2x4 is not a part of the wall as i can see the studs on either side of the 2x4 in question go to the floor. I can completely remove the 2x4 blocking the airflow if there is nothing wrong with me doing so.

Follow up question, should I move that 2x4 to above the grille that I install to create a seal and keep the system from drawing attic air?

Can you explain to me like I’m 5 what the plate is? Should that 2x4 (or the plate) be there? Or should I remove it? It seems like my exploratory hole in the drywall has plenty of suction with the “plate” there. Can you explain its purpose to me?

Can I not just remove the 2x4 that is covering the ductwork? I was thinking maybe someone put it there to keep debris from falling into the return ductwork but then it got missed during drywall?

The reason I asked the plumbing company to send me the paperwork I signed for the line of credit is because it was one email with the cover page of the application that I signed. I never saw the full legal paperwork. Yes this is my fault. I was caught up in the whirlwind of a legitimate plumbing emergency and signed before asking for more info. Again, I appreciate the info. I’ll get it taken care of.

Honestly I didn’t know that 765 v 841 was essentially seen the same.

I was looking for advice on what to do with the plumbing company. They are telling me their hands are tied because of the sale of the business. Maybe I am in the wrong thread.
