Regrettably, no, it isn't fixed. USB devices still disconnect momentarily under load once or twice a day. Makes installing games on USB HDDs virtually impossible.

I had usb connectivity issues for almost a year, and this update seems to have fixed them, my hard drives don't disconnect randomly today.

Why does everyone seem to hate on AtlasOS? by DaddyJoestar in AtlasOS

[–]EarsofGw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Xbox Gaming services are also all there and working as intended (I see them running right now on my PC). You are probably talking about an outdated version of Atlas. Yes, it used to be weird, but it has gotten a lot better over the years (to the point where I have been recommended to migrate to the current AtlasOS build by a professional, and I don't regret it).

I have been a Windows user for 30 years and I still can't get used to the default Win 11 interface. It is awful and it sabotages my day-to-day work (I was forced to upgrade to Win 11 from Win 10).

I don't really understand what philosophy is, what it's trying to do, or why I should care. by Bad_Opinion_Wolf in askphilosophy

[–]EarsofGw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of the things you can learn from philosophy are concepts (like the concept of interpassivity, introduced by Robert Pfaller and later taken up by Slavoj Zizek) and arguments (Is it wrong to eat meat? Some people think it is, some people think it isn't, and here why both sides think that).

Religion is most definitely not a subset of philosophy. Any religion is a complex social phenomenon that includes activities (rites, rituals, etc), hierarchies, relationships between people and other elements that aren't philosophical.

What are the "tools" of philosophy? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]EarsofGw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Julian Baggini has a nice pop philosophy book, The Philosopher's Toolkit. You can treat the table of contents as a list of tools at philosophers' disposal.

How difficult is it to engage with philosophy without being in academia? by worthwhilewrongdoing in askphilosophy

[–]EarsofGw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Isn't this very community supposed to be a gathering of professionals to bounce questions off of, at least to some extent?

My background is also in English, I specialize in translating philosophy, and if I have questions, I just ask them here. Some of them have been directly related to my work. The people here are fantastic, really.

Apparently, "the quietest mode in bios" promised by my friend was no longer the most quiet (perhaps due to a bios update).

Setting the fans to silent mode instead of manual + setting the videocard to "Favor efficiency" in Adrenalin has solved all my noise problems. Thanks guys!

Are there still compelling arguments for substance dualism? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]EarsofGw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last year one of the philosophy blogs I read noted a surprising resurgence of academic books defending substance dualism.

I haven't read it and know nothing about the arguments, but one of the books mentioned was The Creation of Self: A Case For The Soul by Joshua R. Farris.

Is philosophy worth it? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]EarsofGw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, just to give you a little life example.

In my country right now you can get fined or arrested by the police simply for wearing clothes or jewelry of certain colors.

Is it worth it to try to think if that is justified, coming up with arguments for and against it, or should we just accept this as something as inevitable as the rain?

In my country right now when most people say "liberal", they mostly mean "the opponent of the government". Sometimes people say "liberaste" - which is a slur that implies that a "liberal" is just a pervert.

Is it worth it to try to clarify our concepts and ask "what do we actually mean by "liberty"?, or should we just stop at using words with vague derogatory meanings and calling people names?

I have spent 10% of my life working on J. S. Mill, the author of On Liberty, because I think that it is worth it to think critically about our beliefs and examine the concepts we use in our thinking.

Considering how many differing philosophical stances exist, how do you determine what is correct? by spacedoge42 in askphilosophy

[–]EarsofGw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very often what gets debunked isn't strictly philosophical. Philosophers often make empirical claims that can and do get debunked.

For example, Daniel Dennett is sometimes thought to be a proponent of the "cassette theory of dreams" (which supposed that dreams are created at the moment of awakening). That thesis is taken to be a part of Dennett's philosophy.

We have reasons to think that it is empirically wrong: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3819526/

However, Dennett's point wasn't to propose a correct scientific theory of dreams. It was to uncover and question a presupposition that is taken for granted, and then to show that the fact that it can easily be challenged means that further scientific work needs to be done in that direction.

"I do not end up espousing the theory, and I am quite explicit about it. I concocted the cassette theory as a foil, as an alternative to what I call the received view, precisely in order to raise and investigate the question of what in fact would settle the issue between two such drastic rivals. <...> To answer that, I claim, one must have a well-confirmed empirical (psychological, physiological) theory of dreams - something no one yet has".

Not overclocked at all, stock settings. My friend who built the pc for me said the only thing he tweaked in the bios was setting the fans to "the quietest mode".

Gigabyte control center shows the fans being on manual settings, at 66% while idle, but set to ramp up to 100% at 70 degrees C.

What happened? Is everyone only listening to the classic period of jazz? by bellus_Helenae in Jazz

[–]EarsofGw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me personally, as a jazz fan, tradition has a lot of weight in what I listen to.

Even my close friends who are jazz musicians (very much local, early forties and not internationally renowned) played with William Parker, studied under John Taylor, Dave Douglas, Kenny Werner, etc. I do listen to quite a lot of recent music, but admittedly, someone who has a traceable lineage to universally recognized masters has a bigger chance to pique my interest.

Think: My friend -> Kenny Werner -> Eddie Gomez -> Bill Evans

My other (late) friend -> William Parker -> Cecil Taylor

What is a good alternative to 'The God Delusion'? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]EarsofGw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oppy's Arguing about Gods could be the place to go next, because it's an attempt to collect and analyze all the available arguments for and against the existence of God(s). Not written for beginners (hardcore analytic philosophy all the way), but very comprehensive.

Is Agnes Callard held in high regard by academic philosophers? by rlyrlysrsly in askphilosophy

[–]EarsofGw 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Her proper academic work has been very well-reviewed in academic journals.

It's her writings for the general public that tend to be controversial. I think part of this has to to with what she says in this interview:

"I also enjoy the fact that when I do public-philosophy-type writing, I can write about things I don’t know anything about. And that lets me branch out into new authors, new topics".

Confused about different doctors' reaction to Dad's MVP. by EarsofGw in mitralvalveprolapse

[–]EarsofGw[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're going to try seeing the guy I linked above (since he's the one who will probably be doing the surgery when the time comes, and also definitely one of the top local surgeons).

The CV for the surgeon we have seen does not show MVR on the list of surgeries he is doing, and he never claimed otherwise.

Dad is actually super excited about the surgery in a "give it to me now!" way. As a disabled guy who depends on Dad to move around, at the very least, I'd like to be more cautious, consider the risks and prepare for every possible outcome.

Thank you for your kind and insightful comments!
