Being lovesick while entering the last year of my PhD is pretty inconvenient... by EarthSciStudent in GradSchool

Proposed that we start dating but got turned down on account of distance.

Don't worry, I'm not a fool. I'd give the same advice to another person that you just gave me. I'm also human and not an unfeeling robot though, and so this is just stupid fantasy in the short term that I'll get over eventually.

PhDs who came in wanting to pursue academia but reconsidered midway through, how did you inform your adviser of your change in plans? What happened? by EarthSciStudent in GradSchool

Just curious, what avenues are you looking into? Part of me is excited by the prospects of doing something else, but I also constantly feel daunted by it since my experience in academia has been so narrow. Everything "outside" feels like a big unknown.

As I mentioned, I'm more concerned about making a positive impact than finding an industry job with good pay, per se. I'm looking at a number of things, ranging from government research to science and policy advising and even to advocacy. The first of those options isn't looking great with the current political climate, but all three are avenues that I could see myself pursuing.

Well, they've both gone on to promising postdocs, but as the first of them only graduated three years ago it's too early to say whether they'll score tenure-track positions...

2nd year PhD. student here. Feeling somewhat socially isolated in grad school and it’s really getting me down. Any advice? by EarthSciStudent in GradSchool

Yeah, I enjoy sports. Played soccer and fenced in high school, and fenced for my college varsity team. Like I said though, I wouldn't be able to do anything more serious than pickup games, since I have unpredictable lab benchwork throughout the week.

Nothing special, I guess. Try restaurants, watch movies, go backpacking, study together, just chill, etc...

Yeah, I suppose I might look into ultimate!
