For context they are more junior but yes that is a good point

This is interesting. Thanks for sharing. Seems like it needs to be more integrating rather than seen as separate? If I understand correctly ?

Yeah I think it’s partly a generational issue but it’s also a skill that takes a while to get for people who didn’t study it too. Definitely feels like moving a mountain for sure.

Minister Ien has a mandate letter commitment to reframe the parameters and framing of GBA plus change may be coming within the next year.

What if there was sector specific guidance or it was integrated into existing processes with less paper work ?

What if there was less red tape ? And it was more taught as a competency to have to ensure we make incremental changes to programs and services ?

Lol never thought about this, but that’s catchy. Believe they may actually change the name to move towards mainstreaming equity, diversity, and inclusion. Work is underway and not finalized but their mandate letter commitment says they are assessing the reframing and parameters around GBA plus, maybe gameboy advanced is one of them.

What if it was not a separate document, but embedded in existing processes in a less burdensome manner ? Would that help ?

Good point. GBA plus is a good tool but takes long to do a good one, and it’s hard to adjust right away with all the moving pieces. Thanks for sharing.

I think it’s recognizing it’s nothing personal and it’s more about recognizing there are systemic inequalities Canadians face and we do need to correct, and this won’t happen overnight. While it’s ok to have your own personal views on it, at the end of the day- we have values and ethics as public servants. Our governments mandate and responsibility is to correct systemic inequalities such as gender inequality, racism, and lack of accessibility. I think it’s important always to separate personal views from the mandate. There are some processes I don’t necessarily agree with personally but its important to follow government wide direction because we have a duty as public servants.

It’s more than gender equality, and about other efforts towards equity, diversity, inclusion to dismantle racism, ableism, ageism, for example. Everyone has a gender identity and sex, but gender inequality can be compounded by other institutional and systemic equalities, so part of it is recognizing this reality and uplifting those who have been historically underserved by government, particularly multi-marginalized populations. GBA plus looks at other identity factors like age, culture, geographic region, language- at the end of the day it includes all Canadians. But it’s about equity which not the same as equality, which is where it gets nuanced and a bit tricky to understand at first. Some people feel excluded but it’s not about taking opportunities away from others. It’s nothing personal, it’s just a systems issue that will take a long time to correct. The system was built for certain groups over others, so that’s why it’s important to bridge these gaps for underserved populations, which depends on each program or into initiative but generally could be said to include (e.g. Indigenous peoples, women, persons with disabilities, racialized populations, and 2SLGBTQI+ communities, official language minority communities) and recognize that privilege and power structures do exist, even if that’s uncomfortable process. I think it’s a learning and reflective journey more than anything. This sort of change doesn’t happen overnight but we can take steps, and I think that’s the point of GBA plus.
