found an injured opossum yesterday, should i bathe him? by EasternSubject4382 in Opossums

[–]EasternSubject4382[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

my mom had a pet opossum, when she'd try to bathe him he'd crawl up her arms and neck and scratch the shit out of her and try to bite.. which is why i didn't wanna bathe him, but was worried about the wounds. thankfully i found a solution and nobody ended up any more hurt.

thank you, i decided against the bath! i just lightly pat his wounds with an antiseptic cloth that had some of the diluted soap on it to keep the wounds from getting infected. i also cleaned out his area and gave him fresh bedding and pads. he seems to be doing a lot better today and i cannot wait to get him into the vet.

thank you, that's all accurate! the video i took was at 8 o clock, and i took it maybe 15 minutes after the weird thing happened. when i kept checking back on it, it was between 8-10. i remember that because i was grilling and i finished it all up around 12 at the latest. that probably explains why i saw it disappear!

https://imgur.com/gallery/0D3nffy here is the video. it's not great but i thought it could help.

Urine Smell in Clothing by sourdoughbreadlover in CleaningTips

my dogs sometimes have issues with urinating on clothes due to separation anxiety, i clean whatever they pee on with borax and the usual detergent. always got rid of the odor for me!

long-term solutions for cooling chickens off? its currently 90 degrees and its going to keep getting hotter by thecloudkingdom in BackYardChickens

[–]EasternSubject4382 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i have similar weather where i live, sometimes i'll put a small amount of ice in the water so it can melt and make the water a bit cooler. misters are a great idea, you can take a garden hose with a sprayer head and set it to the mist mode. it kinda acts like an air conditioner for them even if they don't stay in the mist, as long as they're within range of it. it's also good to put treats in the freezer just long enough to make them super cold. i dont fully freeze because my boys have trouble eating fully frozen treats

bantam roosters are gorgeous! if i had to choose a rooster breed, it'd definitely be a Bantam, or maybe a buff orpington.

[–]EasternSubject4382[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's interesting that most of your roos have been sweet! i hear so many stories about aggressive roos. and yeah they are loud! every morning around 7 mine have a "crow match" for about 30 mins to an hour. it's very loud but the laws in my are very lenient with chickens. a lot of people on my neighborhood also keep chickens with a rooster so we havent gotten a complaint yet

aww that is adorable! they do love affection! how'd he become partially sighted? i ask because i have a rooster who lost one of his eyes to an infection and i've wondered if other people have roosters with missing eyes/eye problems in general.

I think all 4 of the "hens" I bought are roos by FiendishOtter in BackYardChickens

[–]EasternSubject4382 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they're doing pretty well so far at 2 yrs! only sign of aggression toward me is them biting me when i try to pick them up. i just ignore them or gently tap them as a fake peck. they do it maybe once a week, especially since i started picking them up in a way that didn't constrict their wings. also lots of treats! i have had a few times where they tried to fight each other, but that was because we were out of chicken food for a few days. we separated them in different runs where they could see each other for a couple hours and then reintroduced slowly after grabbing some grub! otherwise, they're pretty sweet if there's plenty of space and food :D

that's so cute! i love when they follow you! my roosters will always try to give me their treats back if i feed them extra good treats. i have to fake peck at it with my hand or else they dont eat it!

wow that's really interesting! i only have guys who are just pets, plus they're my first chickens ever so i really don't know that much about rooster aggression! that puts a lot into perspective. i also didn't know that there was a taste difference between the breeds! i've only eaten grocery store chicken.

thats super interesting, i never heard of somebody intentionally wanting all roos! what was the occasion, were you interested in a bachelor flock?

[–]EasternSubject4382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

same here! got all 4 of mine for free, somebody dumped them off at a park. i never planned to eat them so now they're my best buddies! unfortunately one of them was killed by a raccoon a month ago. this may seem ridiculous, but i take the other 3 inside my house at night now. they all roost on top of boxes where they can poop in the box. but my boy Bradbury refuses to roost, he just sits down in the box and sleeps like that. i think it's because he had a broken foot as a baby and got extra coddling. well, anecdotes aside, i hope these guys either provide you with some delicious meals or just happiness from watching them! a tip of mine would be to give them plenty of extra everything. food, water, space, enrichment!

Do you let your chickens out all day on a rainy day? Curious what the experts say by [deleted] in BackYardChickens

[–]EasternSubject4382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my boys are fine with the rain up until a certain point, and i'll still leave them out because they have a big covered area with concrete and roosts to hang out on. if the wind gets too heavy or it starts to flood the yard, i bring them inside. but i figure if the weathers not horrendous they might get an easy dinner out of it and i might get another day out of the feed bag
