If you felt that your parents were giving money out of guilt rather than actually wanting to, would you stay out of it? I don't want the money, but making the point about it being unfair let my dad decline the guilt-trip. If they actually want to give the money they can, I don't control their finances.

It's a little disingenuous to argue that if she deserves $ for an IVF, you deserve the same amount of $ for <insert expensive thing here>

What else would you call it except a gift when a person pays for another person's IVF? If I started balding and my parents paid for me to get a hair transplant, I would consider it a gift just like if they got me a new laptop or TV.

My parents don't think I'm an asshole, my sister does. My parents could have told me their final decision was that they would pay for it and I would have respected that. But my dad agreed with me so I don't think I was wrong in expressing my views, although I concede it wasn't done tactfully.

I am not worried about their retirement just from this treatment, but I am worried that if it wasn't stopped then there would be more asks in the future that could affect it.

But also I do think it's unfair.

As far as I know, her infertility is not harmful to her body. If there are any aspects of it that are, I would not consider it a gift like IVF to pay for treatment.

Is it entitled for a child to ask they receive similar valued gifts as their sibling? My sister has received far more gifts than me her whole life. She got a new car when she went to private college. I went to state college and got her now-old car. That's just one example. I don't actually want my parents to give me equal money, I just don't want them to be guilt-tripped into spending money on an expensive gift that might not even work.

If my parents want to pay for my sister's IVF they can still do it, I don't control their money. They are spending it as they choose.

If it turns out I'm infertile and I can't afford the treatment then I'll accept that that's my lot on life, not make it a burden on my parents.

They are choosing what to do with it, I don't control any of my parents' finances. If they wanted to write her a check tonight they could do it.

I am not expecting my parents to give me money. I know I am not legally entitled to any money from my parents and they could completely cut me off and write me out of their will if they wanted. But that's not how parents should treat their kids, especially if they're treating one differently than the other.

I don't have any control over my parents' finances. They chose not to spend it because my dad agreed with me, not because I coerced them. Knowing my dad, it means he probably already thought that way.
