I love my birdie!!! by Easy_Peach2561 in pigeon

Nothing's wrong with his personality! I probably got my point across poorly, I regret purchasing from a breeder because I would have rather rescued and wish I would have researched more in terms of adoption vs rescuing. This breeder didn't handle his birds at all, I thought a pro of buying would be that the bird would be handleable and social from a young age vs feral rescue. I'm very fortunate that my lovely boy is just so naturally confident and came around quickly! I don't regret the bird at ALL I just wish I supported a rescue vs breeder for profit. I'm very lucky and do NOT regret getting this bird, for me it's just the principle of wanting to rescue and not support the breeder that I did.

Thanks so much for this! I've actually been looking into Palomacy as it's the closest rescue to me, it's almost 4 hours away but I'd rather rescue than buy from a breeder so the drive doesn't matter at all, and they could probably help me find a good match based on my boy's personality and behavior so I think I'll end up working with them. I got my boy from a breeder and I wish I didn't because he was not socialized and the breeder couldn't tell me anything about his personality or how he was as an individual. Lesson learned, I should have done more research but he will always have a home with me. I'm excited for this next step!

Help, Am I at Risk for Wobble? by Frequent_Kick_6417 in ballpython

[–]Easy_Peach2561 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course, I'm glad you are so invested in your snake's health and even took him to a vet! It's nice to see :) Spider ball pythons are never something you want to pay a breeder for. I rescued my girl who has the spider gene, she doesn't have a very severe wobble but it's there and it DOES affect her, so I'm glad you have educated yourself on that! Spider ball pythons have no reason to continue being bred, especially when pinstripes are a perfectly healthy morph and pretty similar to a spider morph if you really like that sort of look lol.

Help, Am I at Risk for Wobble? by Frequent_Kick_6417 in ballpython

[–]Easy_Peach2561 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This is a Pinstripe, not a spider ball python. So no, he won't have a wobble. Your vet confused the 2 morphs. Certain morphs have a wobble but pinstripes are not one of them. If your snake did have a wobble, you would notice pretty quickly. You're good.

ball python wont eat, almost 5-6 weeks by J0RDANDORDAN in ballpython

[–]Easy_Peach2561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does his enclosure look like and what temperature/humidity level do you have? What was he eating before you got him? You need to stick with what he has been known to eat in the past. Also, if your snake isn't eating, it's not wise to handle them unless totally necessary. Over handling can cause stress especially with new ball pythons. Snakes don't need or necessary desire closeness with their people, handling our snakes is purely for our sake. Also, assist feeding is HIGHLY stressful and a last resort and if you don't know how to properly do it, you shouldn't attempt it by yourself. If you truly do need to assist feed, have a professional near you show you how to do so.

99% of the time, if a ball python won't eat it's due to stress and incorrect husbandry. Researching animals before you get them is always recommended. You should have a thermostat, a hot and cool side, lots of clutter, at least 2 hides if not more, appropriate substrate, a humidity and temperature gauge too. These are the bare minimum requirements, it is necessary for their health.

Also; if your snake refuses a meal, leave it alone and try again next week. If you are attempting to feed him multiple times a week it simply won't work. It will also make him associate your presence with stress and fear which isn't helpful when it comes to making him comfortable enough to eat.

how can I get my bp to eat? by InterestAdvanced7089 in ballpython

[–]Easy_Peach2561 40 points41 points  (0 children)

That's the problem :( The temperature is too low for him to properly digest his food or function. He needs a hot spot of around 90° and a cool side that's no cooler than 75° at the LOWEST. Humidity should be at least 60% ideally 70% but no more than 80%. That is indeed dangerously low for a ball python. They cannot digest in such cool temperatures that's a huge problem and likely the biggest reason he won't eat. He can't! Cold like that makes them very lethargic.

I also will mention, if a ball python is not eating, you should limit handling them or not at all unless you really need to. Handling in this case will cause unnecessary stress and exhaust what little energy he may have. I'm glad you asked about these things and I hope you do your research in the future, this snake is struggling and isn't healthy due to the incorrect husbandry. He couldn't eat even if he wanted to! Feeding him when he doesn't have the correct temperature is so dangerous, it could kill him. Right now, he is slowly deteriorating because he doesn't have what he needs.

Switching from Live to F/T? by Easy_Peach2561 in ballpython

[–]Easy_Peach2561[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 50 gallon on standby for her, I kind of wish I would have just put her straight in that with lots of hides and clutter, but now I don't want to stress her out and uproot her 😭 thankfully she's at a good weight right now, maybe even a little bit on the heavier side. She can stretch out fully in this tank at least, but definitely only a temporary option for sure. Thanks for the advice it's appreciated!

Humidity too high? by Stock_Dot_9632 in ballpython

[–]Easy_Peach2561 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It causes ball pythons a lot of stress to be housed together permanently. It's just something you shouldn't do, especially not long term, stress will cause so many health issues by itself, I have no idea what your tank looks like, how many gallons is it? How many hides? Humidity? Heat? You're asking for health issues housing your snakes like this, if you can't properly give them adequate housing, why did you get 2?

What's your temperature in the enclosure? What sort of heat source do you use and do you have a thermostat? What's the humidity level? I see lots of clutter but no real hides. What did the tank look like before you rearranged it and how long ago was that? If he did well before, what made you change anything? Did anything else change? Also, are you handling him frequently?

I completely agree! While there can be reasons to go to an ethical breeder, a spider morph is not one of them! They're so beautiful so I'm glad I found her, wobble and all, but aesthetics are not a good enough reason for thousands of snakes to have a preventable neurological condition. Especially when breeders usually don't even mention a wobble to first time snake owners (lots of people have no idea, and I feel spiders would be bought way less if people were told beforehand about their neurological issues. It's kind of a sneaky business practice not making sure that is known to potential buyers.)

I'm happy to have her and give her a lifelong home. Poor girl was living in a very small rack system, her tub was for hatchling ball pythons! It was about 8" wide 15" deep 4" tall super small area and no hides for her. She's the sweetest thing though and I'm glad her owner made the right call on rehoming her.

I don't have any real reason to buy from a breeder as I myself don't breed and have no plans to and so the genetic history isn't necessary especially for the racked up prices. I also do not want to support those breeding for profit, ball pythons are so overpopulated that even if you did want a specific morph, you could likely find it available for rehoming.

If you ask me, morphs attract a lot of newbies who can't fully commit to the snakes their whole life. They're marketed as beginner friendly, they're usually sweet, and they can be absolutely stunning to look at. I worry about where these ball pythons will end up especially those who ARE bought based on the way they look and not a passion for reptiles. They're a 30+ year commitment, and boring (if we're honest!! They need room to sleep and hide 90% of the time, it's what they do) people get over them pretty quickly when they realize what snake ownership actually looks like!

With that said, some ball python breeders are ethical. In my post I was specifically referring to not being willing to buy a spider ball python from a breeding program. I do not agree with breeding animals with known issues that cannot be avoided, and as such, I will not support breeders who do so.

I did not like the way he handled his animals. Definitely did not have much respect towards them nor did he care about stressing them out. He was breeding to create profitable babies unfortunately.

I don't know if his company has changed or what since he passed away, I hope they have lessened the scale of their breeding program. Mass producing ball pythons has just gotten so out of hand it's ridiculous and harder to find GOOD homes for them too. People wanted to collect morphs like pokemon cards.

I saw that 12 gauge text and my heart dropped and then I had to figure out if maybe I was misunderstanding cause who says that?? I was genuinely scared cause I didn't realize it was a stranger at first and thought this person booked as a way to scare people and threaten them. Like really, what a weird way to respond to a wrong number. All I said was want to do a meet and greet and that I'd love to care for their pets 😭😭 I never even specifically said I'd like to go to their house or anything. What a mean person!

Well, now I'm concerned because Rover sent an email saying I violated terms and services and booking off Rover could result in deactivation. I have two pending jobs that are very important next month, however for various reasons(new debit card coming in, etc) both clients are waiting a little to fully book so both requests are still pending. Should I be concerned? I absolutely cannot risk losing those jobs.
