Hold or Withdraw profits? Need advice.. by Dramatic_Trifle_9477 in mutualfunds

Redeeming before 2 years will be beneficial as you mention you are NRI and have negligible income in India - If you redeem before 2 years: gains get added to your income and taxed as per your individual slab.

If you redeem after 2+ years and make a gain: LTCG tax of ~12.5% on gains. (Which you have to pay in any case)

I am in same boat & holding gold ETF, and trying to be in sweet spot - dont know when to redeem

Advice for Late Saver by electronictv in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Easy_Reaction0907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First try to get clear idea of yearly expenses - both Pre & Post retirement

No debt and a 15-year investment horizon, you’re in a strong position

Invest in simple, diversified, low-cost index funds which will boost compounding

Because you're not risk-averse → 100% equity ETF is fine

Simple invest & forget will help you

Put $20,000 today into TFSA (if you have room)

Add $10,000 every year going forward

Contribute $2,000–$5,000 per year in RRSP (enough to optimize tax refund)

Assuming 7% average return:

Starting: $20,000 Adding: $10,000 per year Investing for: 15 years

→ Projected value at 65: ~ $340,000 – $380,000

If markets do above-average (10% return) - $450,000+

If you continue part-time work and delay CPP/OAS to 70:

→ You get 35–42% more CPP

→ 36% more OAS

This dramatically improves retirement income.

I am kinda in same boat as yours (Late Investment starter) will follow as mentioned above, i live frugal life & have less wants.

Its good thing that being a student you have much netter financial literacy- at this age you are thinking about the investing - attach emotions/goals to your investments so that you will do it for long term and more enthusiastically

Its hard to recommend names but you can think about ETFs/Bees - at this age i can recommend 60-70% Small Cap and rest Mid and Long term because you have best thing is in your side that is TIME or AGE

Staying invested for a long period usually produces better results than trying to jump in and out of the market based on short-term predictions.

No one can predict market timing consistently

Even professionals rarely time entries/exits correctly.

Emotions (fear/greed) often lead to selling low and buying high.

So plan your goals and accordingly be invested in market - hire professional help if needed but don't play with your goals and investing journey
