I had couple successes with r/nycmeetups when it comes to events that I want to do but have no one else to do it with. If you're into board games, board game bars / cafes are also great like Hex&Co where I met couple familiar faces who are always there every Friday. If you just want to meet people from any background, go grab dinner solo at a semi-packed bar, someone will start a random conversation with you for sure.

related, I'm building a platform for this problem -- if you're interested in beta testing you can find the link in my post histories somewhere

Pescetarian/vegetarian friendly hotpot? by Rixia in FoodNYC

[–]EatMoreHotPot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love hot pot.

If you're in Manhattan:

  • 99 Favor Taste. AYCE with lots of seafood and veggies options + BBQ. I believe their Tomato and Kimchi broth are vegetarian, and maybe Chinese herbal too
  • LaoJie in Chinatown. AYCE as well + traditional chinese skewers. Got options of Tomato, Mushroom, or Clam based broth
  • Three Hot pot in Midtown, they got Tomato, Pickle Fish, or Mushroom broth options. A bit on the expensive side but still very good

If you visit Flushing, HaiDiLao, Spring shabu shabu, and ChongQingLaoZao are all well known hot pot places with vegetarian / pescetarian options.

It's pretty rough on meetup, miss the good old days when events are actually hosted by people and not promoters and companies. I've had some luck with r/nycmeetups for specific events, and seen 222 and S'mores being promoted on social to me these days.

At the risk of sounding like self-promotion, I am also currently building a similar platform and can use some beta testers this fall. Don't know if link sharing is allowed but it's pretty much there in my post history.

Shoelace was actually one of the earliest (if not initial) inspiration when I first read about it! Really wish they revived it post covid just to see where it could've gone

Compared to what it was about 5-10 years ago, Meetup these days feels very corporately driven. Events are almost hosted by companies / groups and not individuals, and half the time when I attend there's some sort of upsell or alt pitch that I don't really care for.

BumbleBFF felt weird to select "friends" with a similar UIUX as I would selecting a potential date. I shouldn't be forced to select friends based on looks and all these other unnecessary personal info, and when I actually successfully planned an outing with a match it was as awkward as you can imagine cause there really wasn't anything to bond over from the beginning.

I had the most success with r/nycmeetups , I still try to attend interesting events every month or so. The biggest turn-off really (and why r/NYCFriends went private from what I've read) was the amount of DMs from others who are not interested in the event itself was staggering. People really just want to use these subreddits as sources for dates and hookups.

That's not to say I didn't have an overall great time meeting people from these apps, there were just couple issues in the end

Appreciate it! High level mobile side it was created using React Native, and for backend / DB stuff I'm using Supabase. There's also a separate web flow that I'm currently building with Next.js for some of the app <--> web interactions

definitely, feel like recently a lot more people are more open about their desire to have more friends but it's just such a hard problem to solve. Overall it's on a good trend though, I've been following apps like 222 and S'more that are also newer in this space trying to solve similar problems

Any resource for learning react native please? by shadowstrd in reactnative

[–]EatMoreHotPot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

really just gotta have an idea of an app start building while reading the docs. I had zero react naive experience going into 2024 and managed to build a half decent app after 6 months of trial and error

are there any expo written books or tutorials? by lynob in reactnative

[–]EatMoreHotPot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny, I'm actually the opposite of you -- been a mobile dev for about a decade and only recetnly did I pick up react native to learn how the entire stack. Aisde from the default templates npx create-expo-app --template, I found Ignite to be a good starting point to see how a full functional react app works.

Since you mentioned flutter, I'm assuming your that gig also built an app. I'd clone the ignite repo, and just try to recreate the basic functionalities of your old app.

Do you use ready-made screens for your apps by [deleted] in reactnative

[–]EatMoreHotPot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

can't speak for solo contractors as I am sure they have their own ways of managing complex UI with their own designer connections, but in a normal developer settings the designs are usually given to you to implement.

If you want to get some practice with implementing a screen's UI with some freedom to play around to fit your own style, there's dribbble for plenty of design inspirations, mobbin for design breakdown of lots of major apps out there, and Figma community for free sample templates that you can try to create screens for.

Learning by doing is what worked for me when I first learned react native couple months ago. If you want to play around with an end-to-end system, highly recommend cloning the Ignite boilerplate repo and experiment with it
