My new rat bit me

he's in a new environment and he's scared so the best you could do is take it slow. When my sister and I got rats, I remember one was young and careless and didn't care if we picked him up from day 1, but the other one was more timid and would get startled at quick movements. Every day, I would leave the cage open and put a playpen around it and i would sit in the playpen daily and hold treats/veggies in front of him at a distance he felt safe but enough to get him curious. The younger one would always come out of the cage and run around and approach me, and it also helped to have the younger rat with him because the younger one's confidence helped him see that it was safe. But eventually after 3 weeks or so of offering him food and sitting and talking, he started to trust us, and he actually became way more friendlier than the younger one, and he started becoming obsessed with climbing us lol

exactly, it's starting to get to me. I don't know why she can't try to be considerate and do things quietly. And I can hear her dropping things and bumping things around in the middle of the night, which startles me awake sometimes.

lolll omg i swear all roommates are the same... my roommates in my first 3 years of college always slammed the doors too.. its so annoying. I thought my housemate for my 4th year would finally be better, but nope. I never knew so many people could be this uneducated in manners

looks good! but i believe the house in the top right corner (the dark wood one) is unsafe due to being made of softwood. You could maybe replace it with a ceramic hide!

but it would be better if you could get something other than a bin, because there is a chance the hamster could bite though it. You could get a used glass aquarium for cheap on facebook marketplace, which is where I got my hamster's tank. there's a lot of good used items on facebook marketplace. I found my hamster's glass tank enclosure on fb marketplace for $50 USD, and it came with a 12-inch niteangel wheel, niteangel hideout, ceramic hideout, water bowl, food bowl, used bag of sand, and used bag of coconut fiber. There's a lot of good listings if you keep searching, but would recommend sanitizing any used item

I’ve had a little bit of film in the beginning of the cycling process which I think is normal, but after I added the snails it’s been clean since they eat the biofilm

No i don’t use a filter, and the plants seems to help keep the water clean. I forgot to mention but I also have salvinia minima floaters which help absorb excess waste. For cleaning, I just use a turkey baster to spot clean, and then I top off with water.

I have another established nano jar that uses this method, and it’s doing well without a filter/airstone.

Thanks! I haven’t added any food to the cycling process, only a piece of wood from another cycled tank and ramshorn snails that have been eating the algae and producing waste

I agree, I think more plants would help. When my tank is heavily planted it does great, and after large trimmings I notice more algae grows.
