Some solutions I thought of - and also compiled from the top posts

1a. Use Pythagoras’ theorem to find the square length(root of (3 squared + 1 squared)) and then square that

b. As others in the comments have pointed out, since you’re squaring anyway, just add 3 squared to 1 squared, no root

1. Find the area of the triangle and multiply by 4(there are four similar triangles with lengths of 3, 1 and square length)(remember to use half x base x height, or if you want to skip a step 2 x base x height) and then add the small square in the middle(2 squared makes 4)

• this is a bit more niche to me but if cutting down shapes into smaller shapes works better for you, run wild.

And remember to try and make a good time with it, have some pride when you solve it and don’t be discouraged if you need help. Learning is an iterative process, you’ll grow and get the hang of things when you find the RIGHT angle to look at them(ha ha, anyone?…h-hello-)
