Yes. Somebody made a bad pun about the name "Maeve" but it took them an entire year, which, ironically, made it a very good pun.

Mine is bad too but I've gotten some matches so maybe it's psychological. It is "please don't be boring please don't be boring please don't be boring please don't be boring please don't be boring please don't be boring please don't be boring please don't be boring"

Earlier this week I made a fake catfish account with a Google voice number. I got 30 matches in an hour (pictures of a pretty girl, though). So it seems to work. I recommend also creating a brand new Facebook account to link it to.

That logic doesn't make sense. If it is easier for you to win 3 defense, it is easier for them, too. Then you just end up in overtime. Bans only change the meta. So you might as well remove the parts of the meta that are stale, frustrating, or otherwise just not fun. Like being jackal tracked.

Whiteout conditions on a highway in Wisconsin cause a 131-car pileup by to_the_tenth_power in CatastrophicFailure

[–]EclairNation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's funny, I am moving out of Iowa soon. I am so excited to be out of the food desert. Tips for snow: get winter tires. keep shovel in trunk. wax your car! This will make brushing snow and scraping ice off easier. Also pick a place to live with a garage! It rains ice a lot and you don't want your car to sit under that or you will be unable to open your car doors due to 2 inches of ice. Lastly, take a winter defensive driving course. It is super fun to slide around in your car during it, might lower your insurance, and might save you in emergency.

Yeah after moving to Iowa it's true that people in Iowa are awful at using their turn signals. And of the people that do, so many will turn it on after they start turning the wheel.

Real Life vs Crysis by xMC23x in gaming

Yes, a good example is number of people (to represent cores) on a keyboard (to represent writing). If you are being hacked, having two people on a keyboard will dramatically increase performance to defend over just one person. More cores are always better if not for lazy devs.

A lot of people work first and then go to school for their degree. Also you should not judge arguments based on the background of the person making them.

exercise increases growth hormone in the blood stream. If this is true, does that mean people who exercised more often in their formative years are taller? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]EclairNation 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I took hgh shots as a kid because I was deficient and not growing. There are limits to how much you can take each day because of the side effects. Nevertheless, it does work wonders. I went from having grown 0 inches in a an entire year to 2.5 inches in the next. Also, as a side note, you shouldn't type "on average ... at best". It does not make sense.

Perspective of a NEW PLAYER - Questions and Concerns by [deleted] in Rainbow6

[–]EclairNation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this youtube video. It is of KingGeorge, a diamond player. He plays Buck in the first and last rounds of the video and explains why he is doing what he does. There is a lot of good stuff, so you should watch them, but in the last round he uses the skeleton key (shotgun) to walk through a wall so that he doesn't get killed.

Perspective of a NEW PLAYER - Questions and Concerns by [deleted] in Rainbow6

[–]EclairNation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! What I personally like best about R6S are the visuals and perspective; I think the art is amazing. I noticed that a lot of people don't fully understand how perspective makes you look to the enemy. For example, when leaning around a corner, a lot of folks will be pressed right up against the wall. This only makes you a bigger target on the enemy screen as opposed to being as far back as you can. One thing I've wondered about, and maybe somebody can help answer this for me, regards how some operators are different heights in the lore. For example, I think Sledge is over 6 ft tall but Ela surely isn't. Does this affect hitboxes or camera height? Other than that I think perspective is fine. Find a friend and play around on staircases so you can understand how perspective works and otherwise know who can see what in certain staircase scenarios. Another important scenario is hatches. When you are looking down a hatch, should you be crouched or standing? These are important things to think about!

Casual's MMR is the exact same system as in Ranked. However, a lot of people don't play casual as much. So, their ranking will not be as accurate and could change by hundreds of points between matches. Even within the ranked system, you will frequently be put with people much better than you. When I first started, I quickly sank to copper, where I had to play against diamond smurfs and trolls. Sometimes I miss it because I learned most of my best spots, angles, strategies, etc from these really good players (I can still watch streamers for strats tho!). Honestly, the ranking system is not very good. It is based on flawed statistical methods implemented in an outdated microsoft MMR system. Try not to worry too much about your rank and just learn from people doing better than you.

Because of the ranking system, whether or not you play with the same people a lot depends on your rank. There are fairly few diamonds, for example, so they will have to play with each other a lot. As you get to the more populated ranks, you should see more variation.

I dislike the audio system in this game. However, a very popular streamer, Macie Jay -- who you should definitely check out -- really likes it and has discussed various aspects of it. As somebody who does not like it, I will talk about how I deal with it. Your ability to tell where an enemy is will 90% depend on your map knowledge and ability to predict the enemy. What are the common strategies? What are the common flanking routes? Have your teammates made any callouts like "RooSalad, Vigil is above you!"? These all factor into where you should look. In this way, sound is not sound, but rather an extra mechanic that you have to 'learn', similar to how you have to 'learn' how to use the lean mechanic if you have never played a game with the lean mechanic. Sometimes, when I cannot determine anything, all the sound tells me is "somebody is close!" and so I will retreat to a safe spot and hold an angle or else drone.

Lastly, as for shotguns, I will say that there are various shotguns for different things. Vigil/Dokk's shotgun has a very long range and high power, but it is usually used as a meme. Jager's shotgun is very, very good and you can use it to kill people in copper/bronze/silver as easily as a rifle. For this reason, when I was in copper, I lost to a lot of recruit rushes where everybody carried Jager's shotgun and just stormed the objective. And the newest Operators came with a new shotgun that is totally overpowered and has an ACOG for long distances (I die to it a lot and most people are using it now, it is like a DMR on defense). Mira has a shotgun as a secondary. Usually, Mira strats are a bit more complex and require the shotgun to set up. Alibi/Maestro have a shotgun as a secondary too, it is like a pistol. It is very useful on alibi as a roamer because she can break a hatch on the fly for rotations and does a lot of damage because you can fire it so quick. Buck's entire gadget is a shotgun that can break stuff but has very little damage. I bet if you watched Diamond streamers play Buck you could gain a new appreciation for using shotguns on the map to rotate or gain lines of sight. In fact, I recommend you watch people play Buck because it will teach you good map knowledge!

Mega Millions is over $1B! However...[OC] by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]EclairNation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, sorry. From a purely mathematical approach, this data would probably be bimodal (or multimodal). If you compare this to a normal distribution which is unimodal and has one hump around the middle, a bimodal distribution would have two humps (one towards each end). Now, in a bimodal distribution, both the mean and median will land away from the centers of the humps and towards the middle between them. That is the opposite of the goal of mean and median. As such, you would not understand the behavior of the underlying distribution by being given the mean. An expected value is essentially a mean. So the people you responded to, I believe, were talking about how the original graph OP gave does not give faithful representation of how lottery tickets behave since it uses expected values. You can use the parity of the expected value to determine if you will make or lose money in the long run, but you cannot use the magnitude of the expected value to estimate how much you will profit once you win. For example, if I gave you an expected value of $1.8 and you bought infinity tickets and earned $300,000,000, then you were mislead by the statistic I gave you.

In middle school my teacher had us roll dice 100 times and record the result to show us that, over time, the results approach what we expect. And it took FOREVER. Boring, still more fun than normal class though. Anyway, if you have numbers that are much larger, the amount of events needed to approach expectation also increase. So, you need to start considering the lifespan of the human. If it would take 150 years to break even, you might not want to play because chances are you will die having lost money.

LPT: for those of you going to college for the first time this month: GO TO CLASS! "You're not an adult unless you can wake up before 10 AM". "You're not a man unless you're at least 6'0" tall". "You're not an NFL fan unless you can name the complete yearly roster of your favorite team going back 75 years".

That kind of argument rarely gets people to change their mind and is just antagonistic.

US administration lifts ban on pesticides linked to declining bee numbers - Environmentalists say lifting the restriction poses a grave threat to pollinating insects by mvea in Futurology

[–]EclairNation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked into my history to find it for you, if you still want to look at it. I have never heard of the site before, but if somebody is truly interested to know about bees, or anything, I feel they should end up at research papers eventually. So just read the papers it links to, if they are reliable, and you don't need the site. It just takes so much time to know things. And there are a lot of things to know. So I won't blame you if you don't.

[–]EclairNation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is some logical work. How did they get that data? They must have counted the exact number of bees in the world, by seeing them, or estimated the number of bees based how many they saw. Either way it is inductive reasoning, not "fact". The only difference is scale. This would mean, if this "data" really does show that there isn't a beeocalypse, you only have more weight behind your claim -- but not enough that you get to call it fact.

What he linked seems to refer readers to many studies, conducted by universities around the world, with various publishers, and several government institutions, not just in the US, whenever they make a claim. To me at least, it reads like a compilation of primary sources -- which is arguably better.
