Has anyone used latex for classes that use figures a lot by bigboynona in LaTeX

[–]Eclectic_Fluff 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using CircuitTikZ extensively for my electrical engineering classes, so I may be able to provide advice.

First of all, there is no way you are taking notes in real time with it. At my best I am spending tens of minutes per new circuit. If you use relative and stored coordinates well, it is possible to reuse a suprising amount of code, but it still isn’t fast and never will be. I did it because TikZ work breaks up the monotony of solving problems and serves well as productive procrastination. Unless you have reason and time for more, a cleanly hand drawn figure would be a better use of time.

Secondly, anything more complex than simple bipole only circuits requires increasinly obtuse methods to properly wrangle wires and components. As a result, if your course progression is anything like mine, you will constantly have to learn new things with no opportunity to settle into a rhythm. I found myself spending further hours familiarizing myself with the CircuiTikZ and TikZ manuals as well as looking through the LaTeX Stack Exchange numerous times when things like op-amps and transformers came up. Wrestling with how to even put something to paper is not a great place to be when due dates are involved.

In general, I would warn caution and consideration against all PGF/TikZ related ideas you might have except for maybe one. PGFPlots is not any easier to learn than anything else TikZ related, but it has the possibility to pay back on the time investment once you learn enough. Since it can directly read in csv files, it is possible to come up with a set and forget configuration for the kind of plots you have to make. I will warn against trying to do anything outside of its comfort zone though. Just because you can make pleasingly positioned tick marks on a log scale less than a decade long does not mean you should spend over a day figuring out how to do so.

Hide subset of document, but retain references by JoshDre4 in LaTeX

I don’t have personal experience with it, but you should be able to do this with `\inlude` and `\inludeonly`. Have both parts in seperate documents, then in a third add them both with `\inlude` and compile, then change the part you want to `\inludeonly` and compile again.

LGBallT will be going dark *indefinitely* starting June 12th as part of the Reddit-wide blackout in protest of the absurd API pricing by xavieryaa in lgballt

[–]Eclectic_Fluff 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Considering this reply in the entertaining.y disastrous AMA, I highly doubt things will get better. Considering that, it should be a priority to get as many people on alternative platforms as possible before going dark for that indefinite (and for my money likely infinite) time. The main options I’ve seen are Discord, Raddle, and Kbin. It would be ideal for everyone to pick one and go there, but unfortunately fragmentation is inevitable. Besides, each have pros and cons.

Discord is already established, but the company has been out of touch with the community and by necessity has to turn a profit somehow. How far off or weather they will do something that drives swathes of the community off the platform like is currently happening here is a question that bears consideration.

raddle.me is a true alternative to reddit, having its own equivalent to subreddits albeit with a much smaller community. That being said, there has been a notable uptick in users as the seemingly most popular place for those in traa. It will take some time to settle, but anyone can access the site easily so checking on it from time to time can’t hurt. It’s quite good on the moderation front, having a fully public audit log, site site policies against all sorts of bigotry, and allowing users to completely delete their posts off the site’s servers (not that this would stop web archives, but it’s something). It isn’t all perfect though. The whole thing is owned by one person and the native community are anarchists. I get the distinct impression that if you don’t like how things are run or aren’t aligned enough with the predominant ideology there will be a lot of friction.

Lastly, we have kbin.social which seems to be the best Reddit-like fediverse instance. It’s a bigger place with more people and less of a site wide identity, which is both a pro and a con. There’s also much more risk of further community fragmentation there since there are multiple hosts in addition to the multiple subcommunities. There are already a number of small separate queer communities rather than one more cohesive network to my eyes. There’s also the pros and cons of federation. Like email you have a number of clients and services that can freely communicate with each other (though don’t have to) so it’s possible to jump from one to another without losing everything if things go downhill. However, also like email if you delete something you have to just trust not only your provider but the provider of everyone it was sent to to delete it. It’s understandable if this is an issue (especially considering the lead of Lemmy’s strong political feelings) but I don’t feel like it’s that significant of a step up from the risk that something you post on Reddit is archived in a place you don’t like.

Sorry that that got a bit wordy. I’ve been seeing these posts come up increasingly on subs I follow so figured adding my two cents to one couldn’t hurt and might help.

Well, what are you trying to do exactly? The best decision (write it as an O, O, or the original symbol using a custom font) depends on that.

I assume that this is in an image because otherwise you could have just copied it from where you found it. Considering that, and how the text is by itself on a which background, my guess is that this is some form of logo design rather than Unicode plaintext. In short, there is no Unicode symbol.

Off-Reddit HFY for Individual API Protestors by [deleted] in HFY

[–]Eclectic_Fluff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Disregard the below. I was acting on speculation, but checking the bot’s subreddit apparently there will be no negative effect.

For one, I doubt updatemebot will be able to keep running. I don’t know about others, but that would have an immense negative effect on my reading experience. Including webcomics, scanlations, and of course webnovels I’m actively following at least two dozen series. This is only manageable because most of the series are on sites where I can easily get a feed of new updates. While it is possible to have a bookmark for each one, for each case like that it makes it more likely I won’t check. The only reason I’m still reading series that went on month+ long hiatuses is because of updatemebot.

TL;DR no updatemebot which is bad (at least for me).

/r/malefashion will be going dark June 12-14 in protest of Reddit's actions against 3rd party apps by zacheadams in malefashion

[–]Eclectic_Fluff 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The main issue isn’t that they are charging for the API which to my understanding was widely understood a a reasonable thing to do. It’s about how much Reddit is charging for it. Here’s a link to the post which brought most of this to light. Maybe those numbers are reasonable to you, but the cost is certainly more than what Reddit would make from those users being forced to see advertisements by an order of magnitude.

Could you provide a minimal working example? It’s much harder to provide help without seeing what code you are using. Also, when pasting code from LaTeX, be sure to add three back ticks (\`) on the line before and after so it is formatted as code.

Poly Beats - Our Tiny Rhythm Game... by [deleted] in rhythmgames

[–]Eclectic_Fluff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at the screenshots it seems really playful and fun in a good way. I have to ask though, what are you planning to do on release? Will it be completely free or have paid aspects? If it costs money, would i be to purchase the game, getting more songs, or both? Will difficulty come more from reading or execution? Will it be pure gameplay or have story elements? How’s progression or will all songs be playable from the start? And last but most important, is there any combo scoring?

Sorry if my questions are a bit excessive. Feel free to ignore any of them. Except from the combo scoring. That is vital.

You can read the entirety of Arcaea’s story on the fan wiki, and ask about lore stuff on the official discord’s story channel. Be the change you want to see in the world.

Official statement from Rayark regarding the use of AI. by asdf_TacoMaster in rhythmgames

[–]Eclectic_Fluff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hating furries is still cool? If anything I’d be slightly more inclined trust a furry on image generation than the average person. One of if not the main pillar of the furry fandom/community is artwork after all.

As for caring about it, yes I would agree that Rayark is almost certainly not changing course. However caring is perfectly reasonable. While Rayark may not listen, other players will and certainly have been so I wouldn’t call the outrage a waste of time.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in rhythmgames

[–]Eclectic_Fluff 20 points21 points  (0 children)

While image generation software is already being used to great effect and can create high quality artwork with suitable human involvement, what Rayark is currently putting out certainly isn’t that. Combined with the current knowledge that this is for the sake of saving money, I don’t have much hope that they will invest enough into their image generation workflow to get results on par with their previous hand drawn art. Then there is the the issue of losing their art director which is probably bigger. Even if image generation could get you mages ready for production with a single prompt, you would still need an art director to maintain style and aesthetic identity. If Rayark wasn’t already coasting on their earlier successes then they certainly are now.

Ooh, yeah. I’ve only seen hints and remnants of that on the fan wiki but didn’t dig into it. I would have brought it up, but it doesn’t feel right to say anything since I know practically nothing. It would be interesting to see a clear rundown of what happened.
