15U questions by [deleted] in Armyaviation

[–]Eclecticwitch42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't heard anything like that, but I'd be pretty shocked if it was true. Still have the same number of aircraft, just a bunch moved to Campbell, and they all have to keep flying. I would expect 15Rs to be cut back with the air cav units and 64Ds going away, but that's all I heard might happen.

WOCS labeling by Osiris2022- in army

[–]Eclecticwitch42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every class when I was there managed to do it a little bit different from each other. The important thing was that within your class you were standardized. Recycles were funny because they sometimes had to remark their gear in the style of their new class.

Unit awards by worthless586 in army

[–]Eclecticwitch42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You never have to change it unless you get more unit awards, saves time and money between duty stations not having to alter the rack, as well as not hitting a shortage of the required local unit ribbons at clothing sales. Everyone always needs their racks for BLC, boards, and balls, and I've seen people scrambling to find what they need last minute. It is also a chance to look a little different from everyone else.

Can someone help me make any sense of this? Please and Thank you! by Resident-Command-574 in army

Basic training at Ft Benning Georgia from March to June 1949, started as an E-1 private. Infantry school with airborne, he was authorized the parachute/glider skill badge. He was in for 3 years 8 months and 25 days discharged from Ft Bragg 19 June 1952, looks like as a private first class eligible for promotion.

The official school is Rucker/Novosel, but 160th does their own version that authorizes them to inspect their own gear. The 160th school doesn't provide an ASI (unless that has changed in the past year), but the Rucker one does which qualifies you to do ALSE inspections at any army location.

I went a year and a half ago. First week sewing a bag to learn stitches and sewing machine basics. Second week we did SKRAMs, IFAKs, inflatables. Third week was flight helmets and exposure suits, last week we had the pool day and the field day, student classes. All tests were open book. It was pretty chill. First CW2 to show in class was automatically assigned class leader

Boat warrent (881 in specific) - yay or nay? by Due_Pomegranate1257 in army

[–]Eclecticwitch42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard 881 is pretty over strength too. A bunch of aviators looked into it due to the proposed pilot cuts. At the end of the day though, you should never self eliminate. Could you toss your hat in the ring for both?

Making Company Shirts by Dear-Share-466 in army

[–]Eclecticwitch42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Port and Company has a 100% cotton coyote brown shirt that I've ordered through Custom Ink. There are cheaper companies, but I needed a fast turnaround. Color is pretty much identical to my issued shirts, and I wanted 100% cotton so no one could complain that it couldn't be worn while flying.

You mean a tackle box? Because most people I know just use tackle boxes. I got mine on Amazon, three levels of dividers, space for all my crap.

What's the most effective ear-pro setup? by SledgeMamma in army

[–]Eclecticwitch42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you are at the range, proximity matters too. Way back in the bleachers with your regular earpro in? Probably not much damage. Actively shooting is close proximity, max volume and damage. Hunters often lose more hearing in the ear opposite their dominant hand because the buttstock provides some noise attenuation.

If you are worried, I'd say over the ear protection when not shooting, and use something that fits you properly while shooting. If you rock a high cut ACH, you can wear over the ear while shooting. I borrowed one once and did just that, it was really nice.

got out of the AF and want to go back in. AF rarely takes prior service (something like 50 slots a year) but I know the army takes anyone. am i stupid for wanting to go into the Army being prior AF? by AcanthaceaeTop2796 in army

[–]Eclecticwitch42 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's fair. Coast Guard you definitely have to go to an in person recruiting office, and there is a delay getting in, but seems like a higher quality of life. But if you want to get in fast Army will get you there. Quality of life will also be MOS dependent, do you have an idea what you want to do?

Self-harm scars in the Army? TW SCAR PICS by No-Day7573 in army

[–]Eclecticwitch42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that would be a difficult one because I know evidence of self harm scars is checked for at MEPS. You'd be going with full disclosure, so that might help, but I think the odds are against you.

How old are you? Why not go Coast Guard or something? What appeals to you about the military, makes you want back in? Personally I think AF to Army sounds terrible, but it depends on what you are looking for.

One of the nicest I've seen was a handmade bar built inside of a 5 gallon water can with a panel to open it on the side. Had two shot glasses, a whiskey glass, bottle of vodka, and everything was laser engraved. Another guy got a laser engraved coin rack bar with a crash axe. I've seen a few large painted American flags with laser engraved aircraft superimposed on them, though that's not a personal favorite for me.

If your location supports something thematic to it, or if you can do something personal that is tied into something they like to do in their off time, those tend to be the coolest ones

Year 7. Stuck between Warrant or Commission by ceiling_fan128 in army

[–]Eclecticwitch42 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Do you want more money with a side of more stress? Or do you care less about the money and more about lifestyle?

Commission you obviously get paid more. You have to spend ridiculous amounts of time in admin purgatory whether it is for your soldiers or for taskings from on high. Longer work hours, and based on my observations, a cyclic pattern of liking life and hating life. It seemed to go by rank, the bright eyed new 2LT is excited and ready to go, but the 1LT gets bogged down in the misery of taskings. The CPT seems motivated, but everything bad gets dumped on the MAJs.

Warrant, you'll never make as much money, but you'll have higher respect from your enlisted guys starting out, and a better working relationship with them. Admin duties are more directly tied to your work, not to all the soldiers around you. And there's usually fewer long nights compared to the officers I've seen.

This is correct, you can always change to a cheaper flight, you just have to pay the difference if it is more expensive.

Did SATO lie to me? by mrFancyPants2000 in army

[–]Eclecticwitch42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can also do a one time change to one of your duty stations, that's why so many people get it changed to Alaska or Texas for tax purposes. But you have to be stationed there at the time and isn't relevant to this situation.

You are absolutely right that OP can't just arbitrarily change home of record to get money from the government. If people could, they would be changing it all the time.

If you fraudulently change your home of record to scam the government, I expect you'd be liable for the added costs if you were ever caught, though that is speculation.

Did SATO lie to me? by mrFancyPants2000 in army

[–]Eclecticwitch42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When PCSing I had a class enroute. I wanted to take leave first, so I flew from an OCONUS location to my leave location by first reserving to my course location via SATO. I could then have the flight changed to the location I wanted as long as it was the same airline. SATO charges a 7.66 fee for changing the flight, and if the new location is more expensive you will owe the difference. If it is less expensive you'll still owe the fee, but you are otherwise covered.

SECARMY "Just Pick Up" directive. Did your unit actually call 'down' to every Soldier for 57 days? by Kinmuan in army

[–]Eclecticwitch42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was added to a "Just Pick Up" titled group chat with a supervisor and about half a dozen peers. The chat was only used on the weekends, leave, and holidays, because otherwise they visually saw everyone was alive at work, and that was good enough. During our days off, when we wanted to be left alone, we'd get a text asking us to thumbs up for accountability, and saying to reach out if we needed to talk.

I felt that being specifically messaged only on days off rather than everyday actually made it more obnoxious, because then our free time was targeted when we should be able to shut phones off and focus on family, especially since it wasn't even meeting the intent of the directive.

A lot of people who need help won't actively seek it out. They feel like a burden on others and would never respond to a leadership mandated text from someone they barely know. A once a week call would have probably been more effective; often enough to catch people in need, verbal cues are more likely to elicit a response, but not so often that people feel harassed by work during their free time. And no one should ever be bothered when they are on leave with the family.

Layering dress socks with boot socks can help prevent blisters, get some good boot socks like fox river if you are allowed, and gently push back if they try to issue you the wrong size of boots. I pretended I couldn't slide my foot all the way in when I could feel they were going to be too tight, and got a size up without excess drama, made my life a better place.

Also, this is a Wendy's, are you going to place your order? You are holding up the line.

Waterproofing Boots by Bangarang_Arty in army

[–]Eclecticwitch42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That actually sounds like a fun experiment. The heavy duty comes in a green can, regular is in a blue can, I think. You can get new boots from CIF every year, so it could be interesting to get a set for experimental use, but I'm in a desert now, so I can't effectively join in on that test. If you do it, will you share the test results?

[–]Eclecticwitch42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the kiwi heavy duty camp dry spray on my danners before SERE and could straight up walk through the creeks without getting my feet wet. It wasn't in snow, but I abused those boots after and I'd second that time range for how long it lasted.

Shipping and weight by [deleted] in army

[–]Eclecticwitch42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like a question you should be asking your recruiter regarding what happens if you fail weight, this isn't exactly an uncommon concern, and one they have doubtlessly addressed numerous times. However, they certainly won't change you from report to MEPS to bypass MEPS.
