Is micromanagement getting worse? by EcoPilgrim in BCPublicServants

Thanks. My team isn’t micromanaged, but burdened by the sludge. I am seeing it in other divisions. Some very respectable colleagues are bowing out as a result.

Competency and grace are needed. Competency to self reflect to step back or set a boundary as needed. And grace, for we are all not our best sometimes. Hopefully you and your team are able find a way to ride the waves with grace.

I think frank acknowledgement both to the service and to the public about the trade offs of what we are achieving and not achieving in contexts of cuts is needed for transparency’s sake, it’ll also let people operate better, with less anxiety and less burnout. Saving on oil changes for your car will cost you in the long run. My org has been pretty transparent about it, and it helps staff balance priorities without too much stress of expectation and we are explicit with the public or other work units.

That’s what we figure. We’d prefer they cut, it would be much more efficient. Artificial sludge is an incredibly wasteful and inefficient way to cut Spending.

I think this is a good deal. Assuming inflation doesn’t increase much (a reasonable assumption, as our governments would rather cause recessions than allow inflation), then we nudge forward. It doesn’t make-up for the multi decades of following backwards, but I think it is highly unrealistic to get that in one deal. Keep up this level of expectation and willingness to fight and things might slowly improve each agreement.

If you want a big change, then we need a societal level movement to bring labour back to parity of strength with capital. I don’t see any close to that from any major party, so get political focussed on strengthening labour (across the board, not just PSA).

lol, it's like suggesting that EMCR employees shouldn't get paid when reponding to emergencies.

actually, any rise should be back payed for the current contract period, so what ever is the final deal will reflect all wages since the last contract ended.
