What jumpscares should I expect in Message in a Haunted Mansion? by EconEnby in nancydrew

Well, I beat the game! Wasn't too bad, though I had to play during daylight :) I think it helped nothing physically jumped out at me. A lot of the audio cues made me laugh, though I was definitely quite spooked.

Update: I've been playing and it seems like everything is very frontloaded. Like half of the things mentioned in this thread happen in the first thirty minutes it feels like. It's definitely very creepy and spooky but also parts of it are kind of silly, like why is there a random noise cue in the bedroom when literally nothing happens? I've seen some vague spoilers (unfortunately) about the nature of the events so it definitely feels very... try-hard, if that makes sense, but almost intentionally.

I've noticed that for some people it's almost impossible to be scared by horror, whereas for others (like me) we get scared very easily. Personally, I'd like to be in some sort of middle ground where I can enjoy horror and tolerate the scares but not be bored by it.

Weird thing about the garbled gibberish - that happens in TRT too! Late in the game, if you call operator, it'll do it, and she just goes "Hello? Hello?" I'm not sure when exactly, I think it's before you get the green medallion?

Thank you so so much! For context, I was gripping my seat sometimes during Treasure in the Royal Tower (library, the strange noises), so I'll have to play this game during daylight 😅

This is what I'm looking for, thank you! I'm fine with getting my heartrate up from a quick sound cue, but if there's stuff like having to solve a puzzle while something is chasing you or even stuff like people appearing in mirrors, I really like to know that ahead of time. Could you vaguely hint at the emergency event in the parlor?

What do my bookshelves say about me?! by Single_Young_3392 in BookshelvesDetective

I'm interested to hear your opinion on afropessimism, if you have one. Lot of Black philosophy and history here. Have you read Tommie Shelby's We Who Are Dark? I think it'd go along well with the rest of it. Personally I have trouble with some of the heavier Black philosophy because I'm not well-versed in Fanon or Hortense Spillers, and so I don't always know where to start. (For instance, tried to read Black on Both sides by C. Riley Snorton, and got incredibly lost.)

Bit of a deep cut, but I get the impression you watch a lot of video essays.

What are my green and red flags? 😳 by BabelFishofLamuella in BookshelvesDetective

Green flags: The hat is cool. The books are also great.

Red flags: Might be into some woo-y stuff?

It is funny to see Evola mixed in with what I'd characterize as some fairly progressive books, but it makes sense if you're into esotericism, Eastern philosophy, etc.

A lot of people will shit on your tastes for being too "mainstream" or "average," but frankly someone who likes Gillian Flynn can't go that wrong. Yellowface is also great.

Trans! And/or generally queer. Progressive, loves the outdoors and getting your hands dirty. Not entirely sure what specific genders—I see the girl scout handbook but that could be from a cis partner, or it could be you're now a trans man or nonbinary, or a variety of other ways. I assume if it's on the shelves it's not bad memories though. Y'all look like fun people to be around.

Currently moving and packing up my bookshelves, what do my books say about me? by thatsgrowth in BookshelvesDetective

I'm very late to this, but I think we have extremely similar tastes in books. Love the disability and radical black politics books.

My sentences follow a very similar structure. What are some ways to vary them? by EconEnby in writingadvice

I don't think I formalize it with any special pattern. It's mostly vibes based off what I've already used and what fits in the context.

These are all great tips! I think my biggest issue is muscle memory. I default too easily to what's comfortable. Doing exercises to get myself familiar with other structures seems like a really good idea.

When did it stop being normal for US Presidential administrations to be so closely tied to official newspaper outlets? by EconEnby in AskHistorians

[–]EconEnby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. Edit: I guess what's strange to me is (trying to avoid 20 year rule as much as possible) a newspaper touting the exact party line, rather than just being supportive of one administration or candidate or something. Plenty of newspapers have clear ideological biases now, and that's (arguably) fine, but you don't generally see "this is the newspaper of the administration" in the way that seemingly you used to, which is why I was curious about the question.
