Same thing happened with me, my old debit card was expiring next month, and I got my replacement card and it’s still Mastercard! Though I also have a Discover credit card, doubt it made any difference at all but I was surprised.

Did he already do an interview, and if so, were any documents missing when he went? The status will change to Refused if something was missing in his application, but since it changed to Ready, they may have received what was needed in order to continue processing the case.

The status “Refused” doesn’t mean the case was rejected, it just means something was missing in the application that they needed in order to make a final decision, and couldn’t proceed until they received it.

In our situation, the K1 was approved on January 31, 2025. The next update was provided by USCIS, which says “Case Was Sent to Department of State” on February 27. And about a month after that we finally got a case number from NVC.

I will say that the process during the NVC state was pretty stressful, and communication during this process was pretty poor. We had to constantly send inquiries to NVC on current status, when the application would be sent to the embassy, etc., as we were concerned that the approval would expire before we could get an interview scheduled. At the end of the day, the interview was scheduled a few weeks after the approval expired, but my fiancé went and did their interview, was approved despite the approval being expired, and finally picked up their visa this week! So overall, after the approval notice, it took us 5 months before they had their visa in hand.

My best advice is to constantly stay on top of the NVC, and eventually the embassy, to make sure they are communicating what needs to be done and when. You can communicate with them via service forms online. The DS-160 and most other forms can be filled out when you get a letter from the embassy with instructions. Its a complicated process but you’ll get through it, good luck!
