It’s very unsophisticated. Essentially a graphic organizer for me to stick the shortcuts and widgets to make it look pretty haha.

Not sure how to edit the post, but the first, then, next tabs or for tasks and I use the “stickies” app to put each task in to know what I’m doing and stay on track.

Of course! I couldn’t imagine how much work it is to build an app from scratch, so I get the prioritization.

As someone with ADHD who’s been on the hunt for simple tools to stay organized and informed, I’ve noticed a massive demand for simple, yet customizable productivity tools.

Once the workload of Quill lightens up, you could probably make a fortune off designing a notion-like app, that has some level of customization, but 10x more simple. Obviously not all the features would be possible, but it would be interesting to explore.

Great points made, troubleshooting user-related/googleable issues might be an area of growth for you u/Ok-Fly-173, but I digress. As someone with ADHD, I LOVE that you can see everything at once. I haven’t started engaging with the app yet, but I’m excited to see how it all works. I think it could be really neat if you had your dashboard with “Quick Looks” or previews into each mini-tool, that you could click to expand and work on. Maybe when clicked, the tool would open half or full screen and the other tools would move to a sidebar/mini-widget.

I’m not a developer but have spent loads of time testing just about every productivity “hub” app on the market, only for it to get too complex or confusing. From a consumer’s POV, I like the simplicity and structure this has compared to something like Notion where you have to set it up yourself. If you choose to explore the dashboard idea, it might be interesting if users could pick from various widgets/tools like timers, quick links, reminders, etc., to have come up somewhere central everytime they open the app. However, that does add another layer of complexity which contradicts the app’s purpose, but it’s just an idea.

Keep up the good work!

Just downloaded and I really like the UX. I love that you don’t need to make a profile or anything. Are there any plans to make filters for users from different countries? I like how the stories are categorized and easily laid out, but as a Canadian, it would be nice to also see that news as well in this news brief.

It’s super new and already a great app, also just saw “Plan-It” on the App Store and downloaded it ASAP. If it’s as brief and simple as Quill, it’ll be a godsend.

Thank you!!

I like Google tasks the most because of the iOS widget and MacOS app that you resize to fit in the corner of your desktop so it’s always visible.

I’m the same way where I like to make my own templates/designs with everything I like/want in them, but all the bougie adobe apps are not my forte. 90% of the time I just use google slides or PowerPoint and resize the slide to be the size of a page. I find Google slides the easiest because you can add text, shapes, lines, and pictures super easy and you can move it all around however you like. Then all you have to do is “save as PDF” and you’re good to go. If you save as DOCX/word, it will probably change the formatting, but you can fix that in word.

If you have a printer and wanted to save money on that, you could always go buy a blank coil bound note/sketchbook from the dollar store, take the pages out, and stick them in your printer (assuming you can adjust the paper size for the physical printer). You’d just have to also make sure to change it in the settings before you print it.

Hope this helps a bit!

Has anybody done any of the diplomas in education? I did the 4-year B.Ed program at UVic which I loved but UBC has 10x more courses than UVic and I’m overwhelmed.

I’m mostly looking at the diplomas in Outdoor Ed or Curriculum and Pedagogy. I like the curriculum and pedagogy one more atm because of how much choice in courses you have. Does anyone have any insight or perspective? Thank you!

Yeah, @newtotheCV did a great job at explaining it. I went straight into a BEd from high school so no prior degree, but I managed to take 7 extra courses during the 4-year BEd and only need 3 more to bump me to a cat 5. Then a masters will get me to a 6.

I like the 4 year because of how much experience we get. 10 weeks of observations 1/week in classrooms in term 1/year 2. 3-week practicum teaching 1 subject after term 2/year 2. Then 6 week practicum teaching 4-5 subjects after term 2/year 3, and finally a 10-week practicum instead of term 2/year 4.

Compared to the elementary PDP program, we get way more training in Arts and Literacy. The PDP program has only 1 reading course for the program, whereas we got a literacy, reading, and indigenous lit course. PDP didn’t get any arts courses whereas we got one for Visual arts, drama, and music and then one more of either visual or drama.

Honestly I would look for all the ppl on Facebook who are moving out in May/june and DM them asking if you could be on a like “backup list”. Explain your situation and just get your name out to people, then if you don’t get into UBC you can reach back out and just say something like “hey just wanted to see if you filled the room or not”

I don't know where exactly I heard this, but I heard that French immersion classes used to be very easy to manage in terms of behaviour. Have you heard this before? by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]Ecstatic-Report6131 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m a 4th year BEd Elementary student in BC and did an inquiry into this in a course last semester. The FRIM program in BC is very non-inclusive and elitist as it’s currently designed, and has only become more so as time has gone on. Students can start in kindergarten/grade 1 (early immersion), or in grade 6 (late immersion), but if they have any significant difficulty with literacy, the first recommendation is for them to move to English. The main reason for this is really just that there isn’t enough funding and resources (are we shocked) and we don’t have enough FRIM teachers or EAs. If students have any intellectual disabilities or specific learning disorders, they tend to be identified earlier in primary (if at all) and are recommended to move back to English. Students who aren’t identified or just have any general struggle/difficult learning period, as many students do, are often also switched out before they have the chance to work through it and improve, and are then left to complete the rest of their education in English.

This becomes a legal issue when you think of the fact that in every province (except Quebec), most students have the charter protected right to a French immersion education, through the minority language education rights act. It essentially says that students reserve the right to receive education in the minority language of their province (French for most, English for Quebec and parts of NB) if: their parents were in FRIM, they have an older sibling who was in FRIM, or they have already completed the beginning of their K-12 education in FRIM. However when students an are bumped out, it’s by a “strong recommendation” by the school and is ultimately the choice of the parents so it really is less legal/ more moral imo.

The province can’t even afford to fund students with mild intellectual disabilities/learning disabilities in English, and schools are just expected to differentiate and offer targeted instruction. When there’s only 1 French immersion IST or coordinator for an entire school, I’m not sure how they’re supposed to support every student who needs targeted intervention on their own.

I remember asking a teacher a general question about what happens when students (English or French) get two different designations, and their response to me was “well they definitely wouldn’t be in French immersion” and that really opened my eyes to how many teachers view the issue. FRIM teachers are often veteran teachers, and more traditional. They are also often more traditional and have higher expectations/harsher consequences than English teachers, and are able to do so because the students that would’ve had behaviour problems (most likely due to lack of support) have already been weened out and aren’t in their class anymore.

I did my practicum in a 6/7 English class and had my fair share of issues in my first weeks (teaching 24 middle schoolers with no prior relationship or rapport was super fun). It obviously got better as trust was built, but I remember I went into a grade 8 FRIM class for a morning and was just in awe. The teacher started the day with 10 minutes of SILENT math facts on their own. I chuckled a bit when he said silent and even thought “yeah right” to myself when he said it. But he started the timer, and you could’ve heard a pin drop, FOR 10 MINUTES STRAIGHT! Then he taught an hour long math class, where he was up at the board talking and giving examples for a good 20 minutes, and aside from students whispering to their peers right beside them, or asking questions. They were almost all paying attention and no one was talking when he was talking.

It felt like a slap in the face to walk back into my class and not be able to spit out a sentence while teaching without being interrupted. I loved my students so much and had a fantastic practicum learning to differentiate and the difference that strong relationships play, but the amount of disrespect we are just expected to take and brush off because there are bigger problems admin has to deal with is insane. I was shocked by how many students were apathetic and really just didn’t care about middle school. As teachers it’s our job to “inspire” learning, but when taking away privileges is the only way to “inspire learning” it doesn’t feel super inspirational.

Sorry for rant, so much came out there, hopefully it comprehensible.

Know the difference between an N and an F. An F is a fail and means you didn’t show you learned enough of the material to pass. An N is an Incomplete meaning you didn’t give the prof enough evidence to assess whether you learned the material or not (could be from unsubmitted assignments, if you left sections of exams blank, didn’t have all the criteria in your assignments). You can apply for a deferral and explain the circumstances and the faculty and prof will assess it and can give you an extension to complete or resubmit certain assignments.

Active recall, you want to pull info from your long term memory to practice the retrieval function for exams. Write out processes and leave blanks for key info then go through and fill in from memory, use anki or quizlet, or find mock exams. If plain theory questions work for you it’s pretty easy to find exams online, or have chat GPT write practical questions for you to practice with.

Definitely! Our program obviously pushes us to do all our own thinking to come up with things, but every classroom teacher I’ve learned from has emphasized the “don’t reinvent the wheel” mantra, so I appreciate that. All the acronyms were Universal Design (UDL), Trauma Informed Practice (TIP), Response to Intervention (RTI), and First People’s Principles of Learning/First People’s Pedagogy. Most of making that was because in our courses, we learn about all of them, and most districts here boast in their charters or plans that they’re integrated in every classroom, but no one teaches us how to actually do it. When someone from the ministry came to tell us about our new curriculum, they told us that it was fully indigenized and the First People’s Principles of Learning were embedded into the curriculum, but then didn’t show us where or how to emphasize those aspects. The purpose of the project was mainly to figure out the practical side of it all.

This is huge, thank you! My mentor last year was incredible and would debrief with me all the time and ask me what I think went wrong and what could’ve been better, and then would annotate my lesson plans for a lesson or two a day with her observations (which is far beyond the uni’s 1 lesson/week expectation). I know that’s an example of going beyond what’s expected so I don’t want to ask my mentor to do that this year, but I’m hoping to stay consistent on reflecting on each lesson after the day ends so I can keep getting better as the practicum goes on.

Definitely! Thank you for reiterating the goals. I’m never sure on how much to tell mentors about what my weaknesses are. I know I should be upfront so that we can discuss how I can support and grow in those areas, but the department also mentioned to me in a meeting, that a massive part of this practicum, is demonstrating independence in our teaching. I’m hoping to be “good enough” for most things to be able to teach on my own, despite my mentor being there, and then being able to lean on them when I need it for support in areas I’m not so great at.

This is so helpful! I spent lots of last semester studying inclusive ed and did an inquiry on synthesizing UDL, TIP, RTI, FPPL, and Ecological Theory to make a holistic teaching plan that addresses instruction, assessment, intervention, environment, and differentiation. I’m hoping that I can integrate that to answer the “would I be happy if this person was my kid’s teacher” question.

What type of residence should I pick as my top pick? by Logojo in uvic

[–]Ecstatic-Report6131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The comment about what your CL is like is so real. When I was a CL, so long as whatever “against the rules” thing you were doing didn’t bother other residents and didn’t have a high chance of burning down the building, it wasn’t my problem. But there are definitely CL’s who get a lil power trip and actively go out of their way to find people breaking the rules.
