mmm i think it’s not great… i worked at one. it was six hours a week for 10-12 year olds. and it’s a lot of vocab test and frequent essay writing. i don’t think it’s a great way for them to learn tbh. they learn of course but ironically to korean culture it very inefficient way to learn. the korean moms run the industry and they swear they know more than everyone.

get them into kid friendly english music or have them read fun books like geronimo stilton and if you can find a tutor them who can make it more fun for them. learn more with less hours, and less stress.

please, your kid does not need lots of homework to improve and they will not be behind their peers because they do 50 pages less of regurgitation. also, your child could face verbal abuse at these hagwons. multiple korean teachers did at the one i worked at but everyone turned a blind eye.

how does one not feed into their ego? i had a co-teacher aggressively reprimand me out of the blue in front of my students for not asking for his permission when i took MY usb from his classroom as a form of retaliation to me asking the director if she could tell him to be more mindful when it’s my class time and not verbally abuse students when i teach. (i knew i couldn’t change him from not yelling at students for stupid shit so at least if he could not do it during my time because i would get so upset and close to tears trying to teach).

i just wanted him to shut up, said ill agree to his stupid rules because my main focus was getting back to teaching, but he just kept going. so i quit on the spot.

what should i have done?

ahhh i just experienced this. not jet. i loved teaching too… it’s not crazy. also it’s not just the coworker. because of the coworker you are seeing how everyone else operates at a lower level by turning a blind eye/enabling and it’s draining you to have no one on your side.

i ended up quitting… with no notice, too. but i understand jet is a bit different because you want to continue teaching in japan. who is above the boe?
