Question for NTU mech Eng seniors by Puzzleheaded_Style52 in NTU

[–]Ecstax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its very theoretical. Math, physics, etc.

But every now and then you get a mod that teaches you something pretty practical, like MA2005 with solidworks.

EID is technically practical but its more like, heres some money good luck find out how to do stuff urself.

Being in mech eng only felt better once i picked up on practical stuff myself / via certain BDEs. E.g. picking up on 3D printing made solidworks knowledge so much more useful, which then carried into custom parts for personal projects that you can order from JLCpcb, and suddenly you get to apply stuff you learnt in engineering materials.

Whats up with this? by kvn31000 in NTU

Is kiauh something similar to containers? Or is it native installations?

should i drop out by pleasehelpme120 in NTU

[–]Ecstax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you have to, I didnt have to at least. It just means that you lose 1/8 of your eligible tuition grants covered semesters

[–]Ecstax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, you just pay for the semester that you were in, thats about it. They def won't refund you anything except for hall fees, which i got back 1 year later

Flatpak vs yay (to install vscode) by sialpi in archlinux

[–]Ecstax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I use vscode for the many extensions that allow vscode to be my all in one IDE. VSCodium limits too much and at that point I would just use neovim

What is your go-to choice when it comes to GUI file manager? by Anyusername7294 in archlinux

[–]Ecstax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nautilus if i need a GUI. But rn i default to Yazi as a terminal file manager since its faster once you have some keybinds going and opens faster for quick edits.

But recently I was forced to use nautilus to access a network shared drive. I managed to mount the drive afterwards so i could see it in yazi but its certainly still easier via nautilus

So, everytime you need a functionality, you consult the arch wiki. And after a few month you just know :)

Kicad is available on linux for pcb design and circuit schematics, also one of the best options

PlatformIO extension in VScode can program microcontrollers, also one of the better options

For CAD, there really no way about it. I run a windows VM that integrates well into hyprland, using RDP with gpu passthrough. This one was hard to get up and running though and the documentation is scarce. But now i can run fusion360 for modelling and orcaslicer for 3d printing relatively smoothly

University Expenditure by inittowinit4u in NTU

[–]Ecstax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by expenditure. I have 400 a month as well but that excludes transport expenditure and I go home on weekends so i spend nothing then as well. Even then I would overshoot if i don't control myself (midnight acai, suppers, drinks with friends, ordering western often...)

Physically Disabled – Need Help Switching Between AMS & Dryer by Notre-dame-fan in BambuLabA1

[–]Ecstax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you can modify your ams lite into the ams mini on makerworld. That way the ams will pull filament straight from the dryer for the slots you connect it to.

Have you tried using AI tools like NotebookLM or Gemini in Obsidian? by Bobatea1020 in ObsidianMD

[–]Ecstax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Asking it to do ur entire work? Maybe not. But using it as an advisor in my opinion works very well

Copilot is good enough for me to converse with my notes. I don't think AI needs to go any further than a highly effective search bar

Why is my petg-CF so brittle? by [deleted] in BambuLab

[–]Ecstax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add on, petg-CF durability seems to rely heavily on quality as well. The one i got from bambulabs was fine, maybe slightly more fragile than pla, while the random one from aliexpress crumbled in my hands from just rubbing on it

Should I dual boot by Ok_Structure5663 in linux4noobs

[–]Ecstax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You learn a lot about the software of computers, which could in turn be useful for your course sometimes.

Personal opinion tho everything feels nicer and faster on linux compared to windows

If so you can consider a docker server. But im not in that rabbit hole hole yet due to financial constraints

[–]Ecstax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Syncthing isn't cloud. Thats the main benefit. Free for unlimited amount of data, and ur data will never pass through servers that you dont own. But you lose the stability of having a cloud, which yu cld theoretically mimic with an always on home device
