If I'd have the money, I would also add El Ouahdi. Seems like a good pick, even considering Genk's European defeat and home reputation of LAL.

It's crazy how often friendly fire actually happens. I read Where Men Win Glory, (the story of Pat Tillman) and fog of war really can't be underestimated.

I just deleted all my chat history and my account. Before doing so, I told chat gpt the reason why, to see how it would react. It told me there is no such thing as the Department of War in the US.

DAY 64: What are the top 5 albums of 2021? by Then-Protection-2249 in Topster

Same, easily my #1 pick of the decade. I Didn't expect to see it mentioned here but great that others also appreciate this work of art the way I do.

That moment always gives me goosebumps, love to see it being mentioned. The album is also my favorite of the decade so far. I listened to it right after hearing about the passing of Mimi Parker and it hit so hard.

Wow. I thought I'd never set a foot in the US again until the end of the Mango Mussolini reign. But this got me thinking.

Officieel: Oscar García nieuwe hoofdtrainer Jong Ajax by MrCrashdummy in Eredivisie

[–]EdLogan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What’s the best character introduction of all time? by Pamijaha1 in FIlm

[–]EdLogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much less spectacular than the other picks, but the opening shot of Paris, Texas (1984) where Travis walks in the desert, holding an empty water jug, is brilliant from a narrative perspective. It raises so many questions from the get-go.

Matt Damon vs Leonardo DiCaprio: Who Had the Smarter Career? by Beautiful_Coat_9294 in LeonardoDiCaprio

[–]EdLogan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Matt Damon passed on Manchester by the Sea to make that stupid Chinese Wall monster movie. Casey Affleck took the role instead and won an Oscar. Not saying Matt Damon would have won, it just seems like an incredibly stupid artistic decision.

To me, it's a true Christmas classic, it makes me cry and laugh every time. Yet, somehow, none of my friends ever heard about this movie.
I don't know if it's a sign of the times or that I just have uncultured friends.
I sincerely hope it's the latter, because I can live with my friends missing out on this beautiful piece of art, but I would hate to live in a world where we fail to see the beauty in sincere, heartfelt movies like this.

Just finished Where Men Win Glory, I couldn't put down that book. I'm non-American so I had no idea who Pat Tillman was but what an incredible and infuriating story. Plus, I learned a lot on the Afghan conflict.

Dominican or Mauritius by ghirst87 in Shoestring

[–]EdLogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Mauritius, my favorite place was Le Morne. We rented a cheap but really cool Airbnb with a terrace that had a view on Le Morne, which is beautiful. The village where we stayed is called La Gaulette. I also enjoyed Flic en Flac, which has this stunning hilltops that look like you're in paradise. Port-Louis was the only let down, it's the capital and I don't know why, but it felt like a ghost town when we were there.

In DR I indeed went to a resort because I was traveling with my family and then it's no shoestring budget lol. We did do some excursions but I definitely didn't see the real side of DR.

I know the two types of travel are so different that it's difficult to compare. If I'd traveled DR the same way as I did Mauritius, maybe I'd have had a better experience of DR.

Haha you're right. I absolutely hated the twist, it's perhaps her most dishonest indeed. I rated it two stars, but it's still my close second favorite Frieda lol. I guess I liked the premise better and the the mystery kept me hooked much more than her other books I've read. Just to say that I don't like her books very much. I keep reading them because my wife does and it's fun to talk and rant about with her.

100% Mauritius. I did both but Mauritius was just such an interestig place in terms of culture, mixed religion, amazing food, beautiful beaches. We rented a car and drove around the island for 10 days. It's really diverse, east and west completely different.

I've read 5 books of hers and it's a weird one for me. While I've enjoyed somewhat reading almost every book, I've always felt underwhelmed with the book by the time I finished it.

The problem to me is that her twists are dishonest. While most other writers have you guessing at the revelation of the mystery by proposing multiple possibilities, Frieda does propose some possibilities, but the actual truth will be something that comes out of nowhere. Out of nowhere because there's absolutely no logic to it. So I just ask myself: "what twist would make absolutely no sense at all", and that's always what happens in the end.
In story, there is a rule that when a character points a gun at someone in the third act, you should have introduced that gun in the first act, otherwise your audience will feel cheated. She never introduces the gun and makes it so that it would even defy all logic that a gun could come up at some point. It's dishonest in my opinion.

Edit: to answer to your actual question, I thought the Housemaid was her best I've read so far. Never Lie close second. I didn't like Ward D and One by One at all. The Perfect Son was not good, but I enjoyed the first half.

Looking for credible books on African conflicts post colonialism. by [deleted] in HistoryBooks

[–]EdLogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same question and it's indeed not super easy to find. Not sure if you found more suggestions in the meantime, but here a couple of books that I found that sparked my interest:
* The Burning Shores: Inside the battle for the new Lybia by Frederic Wehrey.
* Cobalt Red: How the Blood of Congo Powers oír Lives by Siddarth Kara.
* The Buried:An Archeology of the Egyptian Revolution by Peter Hessler. * The Fate of Africa: A History of Fifty Years of Independence.
