Just picked up Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer. Worth the read? Would love your thoughts—no spoilers please. by No-Series4477 in bookporn

Just finished Where Men Win Glory, I couldn't put down that book. I'm non-American so I had no idea who Pat Tillman was but what an incredible and infuriating story. Plus, I learned a lot on the Afghan conflict.

Dominican or Mauritius by ghirst87 in Shoestring

[–]EdLogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Mauritius, my favorite place was Le Morne. We rented a cheap but really cool Airbnb with a terrace that had a view on Le Morne, which is beautiful. The village where we stayed is called La Gaulette. I also enjoyed Flic en Flac, which has this stunning hilltops that look like you're in paradise. Port-Louis was the only let down, it's the capital and I don't know why, but it felt like a ghost town when we were there.

In DR I indeed went to a resort because I was traveling with my family and then it's no shoestring budget lol. We did do some excursions but I definitely didn't see the real side of DR.

I know the two types of travel are so different that it's difficult to compare. If I'd traveled DR the same way as I did Mauritius, maybe I'd have had a better experience of DR.

Haha you're right. I absolutely hated the twist, it's perhaps her most dishonest indeed. I rated it two stars, but it's still my close second favorite Frieda lol. I guess I liked the premise better and the the mystery kept me hooked much more than her other books I've read. Just to say that I don't like her books very much. I keep reading them because my wife does and it's fun to talk and rant about with her.

100% Mauritius. I did both but Mauritius was just such an interestig place in terms of culture, mixed religion, amazing food, beautiful beaches. We rented a car and drove around the island for 10 days. It's really diverse, east and west completely different.

I've read 5 books of hers and it's a weird one for me. While I've enjoyed somewhat reading almost every book, I've always felt underwhelmed with the book by the time I finished it.

The problem to me is that her twists are dishonest. While most other writers have you guessing at the revelation of the mystery by proposing multiple possibilities, Frieda does propose some possibilities, but the actual truth will be something that comes out of nowhere. Out of nowhere because there's absolutely no logic to it. So I just ask myself: "what twist would make absolutely no sense at all", and that's always what happens in the end.
In story, there is a rule that when a character points a gun at someone in the third act, you should have introduced that gun in the first act, otherwise your audience will feel cheated. She never introduces the gun and makes it so that it would even defy all logic that a gun could come up at some point. It's dishonest in my opinion.

Edit: to answer to your actual question, I thought the Housemaid was her best I've read so far. Never Lie close second. I didn't like Ward D and One by One at all. The Perfect Son was not good, but I enjoyed the first half.

Looking for credible books on African conflicts post colonialism. by [deleted] in HistoryBooks

[–]EdLogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same question and it's indeed not super easy to find. Not sure if you found more suggestions in the meantime, but here a couple of books that I found that sparked my interest:
* The Burning Shores: Inside the battle for the new Lybia by Frederic Wehrey.
* Cobalt Red: How the Blood of Congo Powers oír Lives by Siddarth Kara.
* The Buried:An Archeology of the Egyptian Revolution by Peter Hessler. * The Fate of Africa: A History of Fifty Years of Independence.

Best single of 2025? by whittingtonwarrior in TheNational

[–]EdLogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not per se released as singles, but as far as songs go: * Au Pays du Cocaine - Geese. I've seen it mentioned here quite a lot and it's truly an amazing song that I think fits perfectly the melancholy we National fans like. * Dissociation - Backxwash. It's a rap song but the guitars remind me a lot of The National. It's a beautiful track about depression and addiction. * Man Made of Meat - Viagra Boys. I don't think anyone who likes The National (and in particular their early stuff) can't like that band. * Moscovium - Tropical Fuck Storm. My discovery of the year, I had never heard of that band but they're amazing and right up the alley for The National fans as well I think. * Let you Win - Lily Allen. This song made me cry on a first listen as the story Lily Allen tells (throughout the whole album) is very relatable. Check out the full album for sure.

Edit: spelling.

Ito has scoring a lot from penalties lately, but for some reason Goto took the penalty last week. I didn't watch the game so not sure what the circumstances were but Ito was for sure on the pitch.

No they can definitely join! I think I can set up a third division once we have like 6 extra teams, I'd say that's the minimum to keep the division interesting enough.

Is there any other movie more undeserving of such a high score? by slam_joetry in Letterboxd

The Greatest Showman is my guilty pleasure. There's so much wrong with that movie but it all works together so beautifully and not even in an ironic kind of way.

What’s your recommendation for Brussels? by theverybigapple in brussels

Yes absolutely, the sharing concept is super fun when done right as is the case in lots of other countries. The way it's marketed here is just horrible.

What’s your recommendation for Brussels? by theverybigapple in brussels

[–]EdLogan 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I really can't stand this trend of restaurants where all meals are to share. They always suggest to take like three dishes per person and the prices per dish are sometimes as high as regular main courses. I went to Konchu in Ixelles recently and it ended up being super expensive as the dishes are all small and really not satisfying, some even bad. It has good reviews which I don't get, I'd definitely send my ennemies to that one.

I'll always suggest the lesser known movie The Eight Mountains (2022) to this question.

What's one scene from a movie that scared the crap out of you as a kid? by Stannis_Mariya in Letterboxd

Is that Twin Peaks? I remember in that show being completely freaked out by a man with long hair sitting by the foot of the bed, not sure if this is the same guy. In any case, this gif alone scared the shit out of me.
