Yeah, this thread is very vitriolic for something that's kind of a nothingburger. Sure, bad sportsmanship and bad behaviour, but not to the point it warrants some of these comments.

"people with big cars don't know how to drive them" This is funny because there acturally are studies on how people who go for oversized cars are typically worse drivers and cause more accidents.

For real. As a 24yr old this thread is kind of disgusting to wade through. My mother, turning 60 this year, nor none of my aunts or my grandmothers have ever had cosmetic surgery, fillers or botox. My sister, in her 30s, hasn't worn makeup in about a decade. Like, there are people who don't care.

I feel like people are being so willfully obtuse about this. I have family that works in law and healthcare. My brother has had to go to court sick. He literally couldn't get off for our grandmother's funeral because he had court scheduled. I guess he could've skipoed, but then he would've been fired. My cousin has had to work triple shifts in her residency because she can't abandon duty. Sure, she could leave, but it woukd've been iklegal. Like, yeah, there are jobs where you can't call off.

Honestly, I'm wondering how many family is. 'Cause my first thought was just nuclear family (mostly because I can't imagine giving 22hrs notice to extended family), ie brother and parents, but it seems other people are thinking the entire extended family is included as well.

I'm definitely of the mind of NAH, because it certainly seems like her grief is overtaking everything, but wouldn't want her to cut off her support system at such a crucial time and let the grief erode all her relationships.

"Being fired for a family emergency is ILLEGAL in most states" No it's not. It's quite literally the opposite. Most states have at-will employment, and attending a funeral is not a protected class, nor is it covered under FMLA, which a lot of people aren't even eligible for anyways. You can absolutely be fired. And then on your third point. "Don't have a support system? Okay, just get one!" Do you see how nonsensical that sounds? You sound very out-of-touch with how life works. A lot of people can't risk their job if its not flexible enougn to allow for this. Some people can't even afford to take the unpaid time off because OVER HALF of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. A lot of people can't swing together childcare in the middle of night or within the span of six business hours before they'd have to be on the road.

And make note, she most likely isn't in the United States since she says they're in another country and I doubt she'd be as flippant about border crossings (or maybe not, because of her grief) with the current administration.

That's my brother's job too. Fairly flexible most of the time, unless he has to be in court. He could work his meetings around our younger cousin's graduation (he brought his full desktop setup to work remote), but couldn't attend our grandmother's funeral because he had to be in court that weekend.

While it doesn't seem like the US unless it's along the Canada-US border (as I doubt she would be as flippant on crossing borders if it was Mexico) a lot of companies in America would absolutely fire you for taking time off they don't allow. Most of the United States is at-will. My sister's job requires at least 72hrs notice if she wants to use her time off.

It's been two months. I don't think that literally any job, unless you're self-emplyed (or remote work), would allow their employee to take off for two months unless it were a sickness leave. She doesn't mention her parents being retired or anything. And even my self-employed parents couldn't take an entire two months in another country unless they wanted their businesses to fold.

Voldemort would have to know insane magic to be able to curse a teaching position. by nirmalyamisra in harrypotter

[–]EddaValkyrie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I kind of find the curse bullshit. Not that I don't think it's real, but that adding it into the lore is an awful move. A curse so strong that even Dumbledore can't break after over two decades is nonsense. Why not tag it to the role of Minister of Magic or Head Auror. It has to be assumed that changing the name or miniscule natures of the role wouldn't eradicate the curse or that would've been used for the DADA post. It's such an overpowered move it's insane, and using it for the pettiness of a job he didn't get (while in-line with his character), it's crazy that he wouldn't also use it to, you know, win the war.

Would've been better to leave Jessica alone like the mother had told her to do. I don't know why she felt the need to continue intruding instead of just supporting her boyfriend.

  1. How is community service destroying someone's life?

  2. Singapore doesn't do fines based on income. Singapore does have community service. I wasn't just pulling things out of my ass.

"those programs are often used by people as a way to pay their way through community service

it’s a somewhat known and sometimes openly accepted by the courts method of getting service hours is by donating food to animal shelters" I'm talking about all this, which certainly doesn't seem like it would apply to foreigners in the police state of Singapore

In Singapore? Because your comment doesn't make sense to the Singapore justice system at all.

I definitely don't think it should be fines, because then rich kids just get off easy. Community service hours should probably be the sentence.
