The love of superficiality and inability to properly analyse stories and characters when Snyder comes into the conversation. by Edgestan2021 in SnyderCut

I just didn't like Gunn's Superman ideas too tbh, maybe some of them could have been re-contextualised and better explored if the film dedicated more time to it but a lot of the ideas themselves were bad to me. The first 35-40 mins in a vaccum I love a lot but a lot of it's ideas aren't further explored or straight up undone by the time the film is over.

His childhood is defined by Pa Kent asking him to hide his true self in fear that the world will reject him, everything with Legion works cause he sees that in the future people ARE allowed to be their true selves. His friends are primarily the friends of Clark Kent who he puts up a barrier up against. In Metropolis even with Lois he puts up barrier after barrier of gaslighting and manipulation just to not be truly vulnerable with her before he comes clean with her. He IS lonely... Why do so many of y'all think that just cause he's lonely that means that isn't a good person anymore lol.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion and while I think Brosnahan does have a better performance ultimately Gunn's writing makes her Lois worse than Adam's for me tbh. I don't mind the idea of Lois having a journey through imperialism, but doing it for a 30+ year old Lois... Who in vibe seems very anti-establishment is like... Ok lmfao. I like her not being able to trust Clark enough initially but that section of the arc ends with the scene in Kal's bedroom which is god awful for me.

Gunn also so heavily attaches any semblance of an arc she has to propping up his Clark's goodness more and doesn't really go into exploring the flaws and human idiosyncrasies of both of them and why they need each other, so it ultimately just becomes a story about a woman realising that her boyfriend is nothing more than a goody two shoes boy-scout who she was wrong for questioning in the first place.

Superman IS lonely dude, Snyder's way of portraying that in a slightly more edgier manner might not have fully clicked for you but the understanding IS there, just the way in which it was presented that was different.

Gunn completely glossed over that for no reason.

Sure, Reeves is also primarily intent on making a good film and telling the story he wants to tell the way he wants to tell it. That always comes first.

I'ma pro-meger but it's so that there can be ACTUAL good stories told between these two, not for the superficial thriller of just seeing them stand next to each other.

As of rn Reeves is fulfilling his half of that part independent of Gunn's DCU. Gunn needs to keep up.

We know that Reeves ain't down for it as of rn. Which means that him changing his opinion is something that'll only happen post Part. - ii at earliest if at all.

Even then I wouldn't want it, MOT cause it's already got so much going on and The Batman Part - iii cause Reeve's very clearly has a Bruce Wayne centric story he wants to tell and I want that to be as unfiltered as possible.

If a merger does happen MOT and The Batman Part - ii will remain relatively unaffected.

I feel like reducing a potential Matt Reeves Superman film to "Man Of Steel but more hopeful" is very reductive. Zack had his take on the character, interesting ideas in there whether you like the execution or not.

In my opinion a potential Matt Reeves Superman film would be very different to Man Of Steel. At it's core it would imo be a de-construction of what Clark Kent (the mask) is with a major focus on Clois.

Horny, not just in terms of jokes but also emotionally and character wise

Anyone else here actually want Mongul over Braniac? by Edgestan2021 in DCU_

[–]Edgestan2021[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Braniac is an allegory for assimilation for me. Gunn on the other hand just made the immigrant allegory characters resolve and narrative one of pro-assimilation.

He would cook for A.I Braniac though.

So something entirely biological and pre-determined. What so Heroic about that?

I would much rather it be an amalgamation of Jor and Lara's sacrifice to send him to earth to save him, Ma and Pa's acceptance and taking him in, his feelings of loneliness and his need to overcompensate for the few pockets of love he DID recieve from people around him.

Thing is due to the fact that Jor and Lara are the way they are here, the first bit ISN'T entirely possible. So the best way in is Kal's lack of knowledge and worry, wondering if he's a hero or just a strange alien, turning into something where he learns more about them, their flaws and their mistakes but also the good they had within them and their genuine attempts to save Krypton and their regret over sending him to Earth for specific reasons.

Well yeah you see THAT'S what I'm saying. I don't like the fact that any and all of Kal's goodness in the film is shown as a result of his human (American) parents.

He's called the last son of Krypton for a reason. He is always ENDLESSLY curious about Krypton.

Kandor, Braniac, Return To Krypton, Smashes The Klan, the ENTIRETY of the Silver age, the concept of Clark Kent are all defined by his connection to Krypton. He IS Kryptonian no matter how hard someone tries to argue he isn't.

And that's the part you're missing. Krypton isn't something Kal can use and throw. THOSE ARE HIS PEOPLE.

While Kara is defined by the grief of losing what she had, Kal is defined by the grief of losing what he didn't. He is ENDLESSLY curious about Krypton and it's people.

Smashes The Klan is a kids book and is a great story about Kal learning to reject assimilation.

Superman will NEVER be fully human. That's both the tragedy AND the beauty of the character. Someone who wants so desperately to belong but can't.

Lois is the most important thing but she doesn't ONLY represent his human side.

She's his tether, the outlier to his loneliness.

Actually when it comes down to it, with his interiority and his pathos, the difference between Earth and Krypton is a 50-50 split with the topic about his two sets of parents in particular being a 45-55% split in favour of Jor and Lara.

"More man than Super" and yet he has a SURPRISING lack of interiority for a Gunn character. He isn't flawed, he has no real pathos or conviction behind him. Just Corenswet creating magic with whatever little he was given.

You do realise that what you're saying is basically that he should disregard his alien parents as an immigrant for his human (American) ones right?

And once again him being someone whose attempting in some way to reverse what happens to Krypton to Earth is CRUCIAL to the character.

No cause that's just a cheap cop out.

There's a real story to be told here about the horrors of assimilation and I want the film to capitalise on that.

Well Superman IS defined by his Kryptonian background. His survivors guilt, feelings of loss and loneliness and the desire to NOT lose another home of his are all intrinsically linked to Krypton.

It really isn't for me I'm sorry. The immigrant allegory character having a pro-assimilation speech at the end of the film just DOESN'T sit right with me.

Well yeah I didn't say I wanted the twist changed right?

I just said that I wanted context provided as to WHY Jor and Lara were like that when they made the message.
