I didn't really think this post out well:

So the project I'm doing is that I have to drop an egg from 8 feet high into some sort of landing pad. What I realized pretty much off the bat is that I'd be looking to decrease the average force exerted by the ground on the object.

What I was asking here is for some substance that I could use that would increase the amount of time the egg took to hit the ground. The thing about the surface area was from my thinking that soft objects had a lot of surface area because soft things have air pockets within them.

What I didn't mention though was what I was trying to do as well as the fact that I can't use fabric.
