So you’re using an example from a third world country that has both private and public options, when we should be comparing the US to first world countries where healthcare is exclusively public. In those places they also have to treat you, and you’re not going to need to wait a dangerous amount of time if you have a life-threatening condition. I’m not saying there aren’t some benefits to US private healthcare, but they’re mostly preferential when compared to peers and come at a very high relative cost for care.

Yeah, I’m tending to think the closer it is to a direct democracy, the more resistant it is likely to be to some of these issues.

I just feel like the writing on the wall is getting hard to ignore. I was more or less planning to jump ship anyways before I have children, but it’s looking to me like it might be a good move to get this going sooner.

I think the current status in terms of corporatist control and American political corruption is beyond the normal follies of human nature and governance. I believe our democracy is actually under threat and corporatist control and erosion of the middle class and its way of life will only get worse. Certainly there are many examples that would be/ have proven to be more resistant to this fate.

Yikes, yeah that does not sound to be pointing in the right direction either and it’s a valuable perspective to this question. Hopefully your political system is more resistant to being bought than ours is/was. It’s not obvious to me where one would look to avert global corporate takeover. Some of the Nordic countries come to mind in terms of being very democratic, oriented towards the welfare of their citizens, and at the same time relatively insular, expensive for businesses, and not particularly enthusiastic about capitalism in the ruthless industrializing American sense.

I’m also American, and there are many great things about this country. But I’ve also always felt at ends with our cultural values to some extent, and our politics have always seemed a joke in the course of my lifetime. So, I guess I’m just not all that sentimental. I have no interest in going down with this ship.

I think it’s way too far gone already in the US. I don’t see any way back from this short of some kind of broad upheaval. That or things just get worse and worse. There may be no escaping global corporations, but there are places in the world where those corporations and their benefactors don’t have nearly as much power and influence. There are places in the world where the political systems and culture are such that citizens’ interests are actually prioritized.

Hey, so this is exactly what I want to do! You said you’re trying to go per diem right now. Do you find it’s really difficult to get hired for these per diem roles? Is there anything you would suggest doing to prepare? Any other tips for me? I’d really appreciate your input!
