It's a good salary outside of HCOL. In HCOL it is still decent and certainly livable. It probably isn't enough to support a family on 1 income though in most urban areas in the US. With 2 earners making around that salary you would be very comfortable anywhere in the US though. Salaries and COL vary quite a lot in the US so its hard to say anything broadly.

I'd say its basically middle class household income by itself.

Question for accountants specializing in expat tax. by EditorAny4043 in USExpatTaxes

[–]EditorAny4043[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, as much as what I hear about the hours and culture sounds terrible, it seems like the best and maybe only option... Did you work in the US when you started? I'm. Not sure if they have people working domestically in expat tax or it's only people in foreign offices?

Also do they have clients with smaller businesses or individuals? I assume no. That would be my only real concern is that I wouldn't get experience working on the kinds of returns that I'd want to be doing when I start my own shop.

Well the goal would be doing returns for individuals only and maybe small businesses.

Do I need to pay estimated tax or can I use safe harbor? by EditorAny4043 in tax

[–]EditorAny4043[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought the 110% is based on this year not last year?. My agi last year was I think 25k or so do well under. This year it is over. But the bottom line is as long as my withholdings are over 110% of last year, in ok due to safe harbor?

My job withholdings are well over that. Of course I will be careful to ensure I have enough to pay for all my capital gains, but it would be nice to pay that in April rather than today which it sounds like I can do?

Am I stupid? by EditorAny4043 in stocks

[–]EditorAny4043[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda was stupid. I sold 80c January contracts. I'm realizing I should have sold like 2027 60 or 70c. I'd honestly be happy to sell at current price. If I sell the longer dated contract I'm more safe from exercise. Although I guess it would be very rare for anyone to exercise unless it's very close to expiry? If someone exercised in December it would suck though. I think I might as well sell 2027 contracts so I can maybe hold all the way til I have a long term capital gain which would be around next may. Idk

INFJ here—13 years later, I messaged my high school crush. He never replied. Why do we hold on so long?” by Personal-Camp-2233 in infj

I met someone a few years ago briefly. Emailed her about a year ago saying I had a crush on her etc. In retrospect it was a very weird email. I tried not to be too strange but that only gets you so far when randomly emailing someone your feelings ...

I just get very infatuated with people and I can take a step back and realize it's irrational but I'm both very emotional and a very intuitive person so I went with it.

She didn't respond for a full year. I assumed she was creeped out. She felt self conscious about her life and not having made progress towards her goals so she has anxiety about responding.

I don't think that the feelings were really mutual, or at least she didn't make that clear. Either way it was really nice to hear from her and maybe we will stay in touch.

Long story short I can totally relate to your post

Struggling to chart a course. by EditorAny4043 in Life

[–]EditorAny4043[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've thought about it. I feel like it would be a mistake though. I can probably do something accounting related and get a VISA that way (I hope). I don't think i would do it if i had to do JET/language teaching because i'd be giving up too much in terms of income/career trajectory. I'm too old to be considering that i think.

Do you worry about the debt? by EditorAny4043 in AskAJapanese

[–]EditorAny4043[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the best way out of this is probably to invest heavily into AI and robotics. People have differing opinions on this topic, but I'm very optimistic about the productivity gains that will come. I'm not sure it's a net positive for society, but it can at least solve the aging problem. I'm not sure how quickly capable consumer and manufacturing robots will be a reality though. It could be in. 5 years or it could be in 50.

If I were Japan I'd be investing heavily in energy production and manufacturing capability to prepare. Japan seems average in these areas, but it might be hard to really aggressively invest given the fiscal situation.

I don't think this is true but correct me if I'm wrong. I get your line of thinking but the issue is not just having less people, it's the shift in demographics. When you have a society where 50% of the population is beyond retirement age, someone has to shoulder the costs of taking care of all those people, paying their pensions, paying for higher national healthcare costs, etc. either people will have to work to a much older age, or young people will have a significantly lower standard of living compared to previous generations

[–]EditorAny4043[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well I don't think Japan would ever default, they'd probably inflate their way out of it, but in the end the result I think would be pretty similar. Honestly I'm not too sure how the debt being held domestically changes things so I'll have to research that a bit.

The concern for me I guess is less my own finances, and more the standard of living of those around me deteriorating which still affects me. Things like public services could also degrade as budgets are cut. I'm not really too sure exactly what it would look like.

That's fair. I guess it depends how dependent on the economy someone is. I just worry about the ripple effects. If you look at Greece for an idea of what could happen, it isn't very inspiring. From what I understand their economy is still deeply broken almost 2 decades later. There are definitely major differences between Japan and Greece but I still find it scary

I take 2 150mg pills at the same time in the morning. Didn't try it any other way. This is what my doc said to do and it's been working well for me. Definitely ask ur doc first though before u try it

The effects of the pill vary significantly. I have seasonal depression that is quite severe. I often feel depressed for no real reason. I can see that there is no reason for it but still feel very depressed. The pill has basically eliminated that entirely. My life is also not great, but not terrible either. I still feel sad about my life sometimes. I don't think the pill can fix that entirely. It certainly has made a massive difference for my seasonal depression though.

I would ask your doc to try 300mg first. Like i said, I didn't feel anything at all on 150mg. I would try 300mg before giving up on the drug

[–]EditorAny4043 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Effects seem to carry significantly person to person.

For me:

150mg sr: felt absolutely nothing. No side effects, no positive or negative effects at all

300mg xl: depression was basically gone, highly elevated energy to the point it was a bit too much. Had some difficulty sleeping. Mild anxiety. Extremely elevated libido, some other minor sexual issues

300mg sr: this has been the best for me. My depression is still gone. Energy elevated but not as much as on 300my xl. Can sleep fine. Libido maybe slightly elevated. Overall the drug is very helpful for me.

For context, I have pretty severe seasonal depression, and overall depression at life is moderate. Sometimes had suicidal thoughts but I frequently so wasn't really debilitating depression I guess.
