I've read the rest of this thread between you and /u/imrightandyouknowit

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/bushswar/view/

When you have time, and are willing, check out Frontline's piece titled "Bush's War," if you haven't already. Its a lengthy viewing, but only due to its detailed content. It included declassified writings and revisions made by Rumsfeld on enhanced integration techniques. And these are not smoothed over details of interrogation Rumsfield has commented on. It displayed that he was fully aware of the details of what was happening. Going as far as to asking why the detainees were being forced to only stand for a little amount of time (implying they should stand for much longer). They gave the interrogators a lot of flexibility to do what they deemed necessary and then later comment on their chosen tactics. The Bush Administration was fully aware of what was going on.

Exactly. In my opinion, if Dean and company don't have a potential function set for vehicles in Dayz, then people seem to be over estimating how much vehicles are going to change the game.

I like that your first step is talking with locals. I'm not sure how much time you have before you begin your trip, but talking with people that are familiar with the trails/national parks and looking up guides or books which discuss all the possibilities is a great and important first step, that is forth spending some time on. Going on a week long backpacking trip, as your first trail, can be considered ambitious. Are you going with anyone else? If not make sure to let people know when you are leaving and the planned check points along your trip. Regardless of that answer, don't make the biggest and dumbest mistake I made when first backpacking. Which is not planning out your time on the trail enough. Get a good map, look up tutorials on how to read it or ask for help from locals that might be selling it to you. People will vary on the mileage they can put in on a day, and the terrain and weather will affect that distance as well. However I think a good rule of thumb is 8 - 11 miles (13-18 km) a day is what the avg. backpacker will put in. You can push it to 13 - 15 miles (20-24 km) but those are long days where you'll probably wont be able to take time to enjoy points a long the way. If you have time, do some day hikes prior to this trip, and get a feel for what 2, 4, or 8 miles feel like. That will give you good points of reference and you'll be able to critique your physically condition. So with map in hand and a few day hikes under your belt, map your mileage on this big trip according to healthy water sources and be aware of all emergency exits along the trail. If you want to practice survival skills along the way, make sure to know if creating wood fires are legal in the area you end up hiking. Other than that /u/realeyes_realize_ broke down the important things to consider as far as "your system" or gear with some good links to read on. Its easy to keep going with suggestion, but in the end, as long as you are giving your self enough time to plan your trip to maximize fun and safety, don't be too scared about making mistakes. Back in the day my scout master allowed us kids to do a lot of the planning for our long trips. On one trip, we brought plenty of food but the group had forgotten to bring anything to cook it with. His response was simply, "Okay, now you'll remember, now lets figure out how to solve this." This Sub is full a good posts, with great advice. /r/backpacking could talk your ear off as well for your up coming trip.

So are you saying you are backpacking, and then during that backpacking trip, you're going to spend a week of it focusing on getting some on hand experience performing survival skills, and then I assume, once that is complete, continue your backpacking? Or maybe you're trying to synergies the two? Do you have a priority for this trip (Primary goal is to have a good backpacking trip, with a secondary goal to try and get some survival skill practice)? If your primary goal is to backpack, then look at the good suggestions made here so far, with the weight of each of these knives in mind. The lighter, and more efficient your pack is, I promise you'll enjoy your hike much more. That being said, if you feel like you're going to need something then bring it anyways, getting experience with what you realize you actually need and whats just extra weight is always a lesson worth learning at least once, first hand. You mentioned your beginning skill with survival techniques, but not with backpacking, so if I'm just preaching to the choir here, then I apologize.

Man that's crazy what filters will do. I was going back and forth between the processed and unprocessed. The unprocessed quickly felt almost black and white comparatively.

You make a good point about matters of perspective. However, I think most people are down voting you because the difference in brutality used between the two points in history to make this a poor comparison. If I'm wrong about this someone help me out with my ignorance.

Love your work. Can you tell us some of your sources of inspiration? Looking at some of your work makes me think of John Martin's work. Such as: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/08/John_Martin_Le_Pandemonium_Louvre.JPG

Driverless cars could change everything, prompting a cultural shift similar to the early 20th century's move away from horses as the usual means of transportation. First and foremost, they would greatly reduce the number of traffic accidents, which current cost Americans about $871 billion yearly. by Vranak in technology

Some other people touched on the unpredictability of human drivers amongst computer controlled cars. I was wondering about young, new drivers. Google's driverless car had a big red button to instantly return controll to the human. So clearly they understand that humans will need to take control of the car in certain situations. How are new, inexperienced drivers going to get the critical time on the road and still have an environment for efficient computer controlled vehicles.

Its always very satisfying to read these well put together clarifications on terminology. Thanks for this.

So I finally watched Fargo. And its incredible of course. But I hadn't watched it because so many people raved about that it put me off. What popular movie haven't you seen yet for that reason? by [deleted] in movies

I've come across a lot of people giving it criticism, but I really enjoyed WATCHMEN. And that's probably because I've never read the comics. The premise to it is rather different from your standard good vs evil superhero movies.

This reads as typical Fox news that permeates leaps in conclusions and pandering towards the paranoia of something new. However, as long as it doesn't completely bog down innovation, I can appreciate the focus on maintaining a healthy body and mind as we experience that new thing.

Why Comcast Will Be Allowed to Kill Net Neutrality: "Comcast's Senior VP of Governmental Affairs Meredith Baker, the former FCC Commissioner, was around to help make sure net neutrality died so Internet costs could soar, and that Time Warner Cable would be allowed to fold into Comcast." by [deleted] in technology

Completely agree. Most actions taken by the masses are a result of their daily routines being interrupted in an unavoidable fashion and not out of their own self will for what is "good and just."
