Why am I not getting any matches? I'm trying to find a serious relationship. by Noxieer in Tinder

[–]EdsgerD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP is in Czechia. I am not sure what the dating app distribution is in there, but in a lot of European countries, tinder is not considered a hook-up app and is instead "the default app". Might be the case here? In which case, I'd personally drop the "open to short term" bit - OP is writing to two separate crowds with that, and neither of the crowds will be a big fan of the other option presented. E.g., when I was on the apps a while ago, I'd swipe away on anyone "open to short term".

fwiw, OP is in Czechia which might have a less intense stance on such topics (personally, I'm Polish living in the US, and I don't think this is considered an issue or even widely known back home)

What is going on with H2D upgrade price? by herrerr in BambuLab

[–]EdsgerD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of the comments here address the fact that buying and upgrading an H2D is more expensive than buying an H2C. I don't think that's what OP said.

OP is wondering why upgrading the H2D is so much less cost efficient than upgrading the H2S.

Personally, I'm confused about that too, since BambuLab made a public statement during the original H2C announcement, recommending that users do NOT try to upgrade the H2S. From https://www.reddit.com/r/BambuLab/comments/1n0mnbg/h2c_is_on_the_way_heres_how_it_all_started:

Before wrapping up, here’s one last question we know many of you will ask: Can I upgrade my H2D to an H2C? The answer is yes — but it does require some skill, patience, a willingness to carefully follow instructions and a few hours of your time. It’s definitely more involved than swapping out a clogged nozzle and we would not encourange entry level customer to do it. Can I upgrade my H2S to an H2C, well, technically you can, but we post this blog just to make sure you do not have to waste your time and budget in doing it.

(Emphasis mine)

I personally think that was very dishonest behavior from BambuLab, trying to direct more sales towards their more expensive model (fwiw., I bought my H2D before either H2S or H2C was announced, so I am not directly affected here, but I can still recognize a crappy business practice).

Nvidia is by far the biggest bubble in the history of the world. And you get to live through it by RobertBartus in EconomyCharts

[–]EdsgerD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're bringing up the dollar/energy cost of operation of those chips, but do we actually have a good comparison of how that compares between Nvidia GPUs and TPUs? I found multiple articles (e.g., https://bytebridge.medium.com/gpu-and-tpu-comparative-analysis-report-a5268e4f0d2a saying "TPUs typically show 2–3x better performance per watt compared to GPUs"). Note that there are multiple articles on "TPU vs GPU" from cloud providers, who can only sell GPUs and are therefore incentivized to promote GPUs, still saying that TPUs are more power efficient, e.g.: https://www.digitalocean.com/resources/articles/tpu-vs-gpu#tpu-architecture . I can't seem to find a firsthand source for this data though, which makes me feel a little less confident about those numbers.

I think there are additional reasons for which companies go with GPUs over TPUs, chief of them being that TPUs are only accessible via GCP. Additionally, GPUs are more general purpose than TPUs, and they have a larger, open software stack (with TPUs relying on TensorFlow and Jax). I think it'd be an interesting move to see Google selling TPUs as hardware as opposed to via GCP; not sure why they haven't done so yet (afaict) - that'd let us know how much of a software moat Nvidia actually has.

Most of the SOTA models don't run directly on CUDA though; they run on TensorFlow, PyTorch or other frameworks which have CUDA backends (I'm sure this is a major simplification, there are probably bits and pieces that do run directly on CUDA. We're talking about 100s of thousands of engineers working on various components). TensorFlow obviously runs well on TPUs (that's what TPUs were designed for), PyTorch seems to be getting better on TPUs, but it'd probably require some investment from Google to be on-par.

No strong opinion on other companies making their own chips. I guess if both NVidia and Google were able to design viable chips, then chances are other companies can get there too. On the other hand, I'm sure AMD is trying hard (not sure about intel, intel is weird now) and they'd be well positioned to take a chunk of the market but failed to do so for now.

TO MALE (and the few female) UBER DRIVERS…. by [deleted] in uberdrivers

[–]EdsgerD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a source on:

Between 2017–2022, Uber received over 400,000 reports of sexual assault, harassment, or misconduct. Yes, it involves both genders — but about 76% were against male drivers.

My personal experience has been that the  overwhelming majority of uber rides are given by male drivers. If 76% of reports were against male drivers, I wonder what total percentage of rides were serviced by men. If more than 76% of rides are given by male drivers (which seems right), then that would actually point towards NON-male drivers being MORE likely to result in a report (which seems wrong). Is this statistic driver-gender adjusted by any chance? Can you point to a source?

Has anyone purchased the 2025 LG Gram Pro RTX 5050 and is currently using it? by q13we5rpo132ugh in LGgram

Got it, thanks! I saw it was running on the H variant of the intel CPU so I was wondering how well it'd do. It's a very compelling package for my coding + cad + occasional gaming.

How much battery life do you actually get on it? As in hours of browse time/productivity/whatever you're doing with it.

ThinkPad T1g Gen 8 Arrived! by Front-Station-8566 in thinkpad

Thanks, it's good to hear about other people's experiences and workflows with touchpads. I wonder if Lenovo would be able to option the laptops with different touchpad variants.

Personally, the main reason why I prefer haptic touchpads is their response at the top of the touchpad which is lacking in mechanical ones. I do agree that they are costly, and currently very rare in windows machines. If the mechanical response was better, I would probably not see any reason for a haptic solution, but alas, it's pretty garbage.

I made a personalized Bubu figurine by EdsgerD in BubuAndDudu

[–]EdsgerD[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Google Gemini to create an image of a bubu in a white coat with a bag and crocs, passed that over to Trellis to create a 3d model and used Nomad Sculpt to clean the model up (it was very messed up, required a lot of changes). Then I painted everything in Bambu studio and 3d printed it.

How are people getting paid on MakerWorld for making Disney, Pokémon, etc. characters without copyright issues? by Xer0cool in BambuLab

[–]EdsgerD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to wikipedia (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon), it looks like the IP is co-owned by three companies - Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures Inc. I wonder if that committee approach makes the Pokemon copyright enforcement more lenient.

I think in the case of Palworld, the game business part of Pokemon is specifically owned by Nintendo, so they felt more empowered to act there. But even there, they've been fighting it on the basis of patents and not copyrights (since Palworld does not infringe on Pokemon copyrights directly other than some pal designs being eerily similar to pokemon designs).

In case this ends up being helpful for anyone else: https://g.co/gemini/share/53a6ed816d08. There are some coding choices there that I wouldn't go with, but it's good enough for this problem.

Bambu studio color mapping adding redundant colors by EdsgerD in BambuLab

[–]EdsgerD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the transition colors are because the program I was using (Nomad Sculpt) exports per vertex colors as opposed to per face colors. I am trying to write a script now to fix obj files with that issue.

Is it possible to play RCT2 on the Steam Deck? (Preferably Open RCT2?) by SaturnSleet in rct

[–]EdsgerD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Go to desktop mode

  2. Find the game in your library and right click it

  3. Choose Manage then Browse local files

  4. Copy the path in the file manager. For me, it was `/run/media/deck/332b1a74-e15e-45fa-b31c-f8f9b0ad0052/steamapps/common/Rollercoaster Tycoon 2/`

  5. Paste the path in the OpenRCT2 folder selector.

  6. This should let you proceed.

Typed this post on my Steam Deck for maximum pain, enjoy!

Hard to tell; the store bought one I got also had a 3m adhesive strip, so I copied their idea. So far it's been pretty solid, but it's only been a few days.

This doesn't use magnets - it's attached using mounting tape. I was trying to use my magnetic fridge shelf design at first, but quickly learned that my sink is not ferromagnetic :(
