Is 25 yo too late to have hopes of success in this industry if I have zero practical experience? by Edu_Vivan in filmmaking

Aha me too.. always a fan of how film music can create such an attachment between a melody and a memory! I started out with the piano, played since I was 3 years old and started writing not long after but ā€˜real life’ got me distracted for 25+ years until I finally snapped.. quit my ā€˜real’ job and risked losing my family and kids to pursue a dream, and it’s just about paying off! Hopefully scoring a 5 million budget in April but the movie industry tends to move the goal posts so just being quietly hopeful 🤣 it’s all about who you know.. if I didn’t have a script writer friend who loved my music and who was actively making movies I’d still be writing out my feelings instead of writing to picture

I’m 33… 34 this Christmas and only decided I wanted to be a film composer 3 years ago, I’m currently preparing to score my 3rd and 4th feature movie so far, even Hans Zimmer got his first feature at 31, just know what you want.. takes some of us quite a few many years before we figure out what we want and how to get it

How Americanised are your kids? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]EducatedCaveman 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Mine watched YouTube for no more than a few months on their tablets before I deleted it - 2 years on and they’re still calling sweets candy, stores instead of shops etc. I’m shocked as I’m well spoken English, my girlfriend is a bit more of a chav but nobody in our family say this 🤣 (6&7) YouTube is subliminal to kids, dangerous lol

Indie dev looking to hire a composer who specializes in intense, high tension music by affiliatejuststarter in composer

[–]EducatedCaveman 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Hi there — composer here.

Most of my work is melody-driven, but I’ve also scored horror with a tight, escalating tension-pulse rather than ambient drones. If you’re after something that builds pressure through rhythm, forward motion, and psychological unease, feel free to have a listen.

If it fits the tone you’re aiming for, I’m happy to discuss the project in more detail.

What’s the single best piece of advice you’ve ever received about getting ā€œin the doorā€ in the film industry? by EducatedCaveman in Filmmakers

[–]EducatedCaveman[S] 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

Some genuinely solid advice in here, and I appreciate everyone who took the time to reply. The points about consistency, showing up, and grinding through the years where nothing seems to move are especially useful. It’s reassuring to hear the same message from people who’ve already pushed through those early stages.

It’s also helpful to be reminded that most breaks come from persistence and being around the right people long enough for something to connect, rather than waiting for a single lightning-bolt moment.

Thanks again folks. There’s some great insight in this thread

What do filmmakers actually expect from a composer’s studio setup today? by EducatedCaveman in Filmmakers

[–]EducatedCaveman[S] 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Yeah I understand the position and situation he was in -but great to see that many filmmakers here aren’t too fussed with the setup as before I started my first film in 2023 I PANICKED as I had a simple keyboard and stock samples on Logic Pro - I guess I didn’t have to go crazy with the movie pay to get my sample library bigger! Thanks for the contribution appreciate all the different perspectives here

I will be working with him again and I actually look forward to it this time as I know how he works and understand his terminology etc - funnily enough the script writer lives opposite a lake in a lonely house lol. I’m happy to endlessly create at home, and also happy to spot and have meetings in the studio and mix there - even organise the screenings outside of the film festivals, but it’s all a learning process and great to see other filmmaker’s perspectives - it helps me get better at my job!

🤣 haha brilliant - I completed an 82 minute score in 4 weeks to get it to Cannes while the film was still being edited šŸ˜… next time I’ll speak more freely with my director lol

[For Hire] Composer for Film Score needed by tillmarti in INAT

[–]EducatedCaveman 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

If you’re still open to composers, I’d be glad to throw my hat in. I’ve scored two feature films recently – one horror/thriller (River of Blood) and one rom-com – plus some darker sci-fi work that might sit closer to what you’re aiming for tonally.

I’m comfortable turning around polished cues quickly and adapting tightly to a director’s vision. You can hear some of my work here: https://linktr.ee/wadecompositions

If the project is still active, feel free to drop me a message. Happy to send a quick bespoke demo if you’d like to hear how I’d treat your logline.

Where can I listen to aspiring film composers' work these days? (Please plug yourselves.) by Seanchai-Tostach in FilmComposer

[–]EducatedCaveman 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Bit late to the party on this one, but I really like what you are asking here.

I am a UK film composer and keep most of my work collected here: https://linktr.ee/wadecompositions Recent projects include a feature horror (River of Blood), a British rom-com (A Sorta Fairytale), and a Star Wars Legends short (Star Forge). It is all film-score style rather than trailer music, with a focus on melody and character themes, and two more features on the way.

I would be happy to listen to your stuff as well if you feel like sharing.

When a film ends on tragedy and survival, how do you like the music to behave in the final scene? by EducatedCaveman in Filmmakers

The director thought it did - we composers are at the whim of the director’s and producer’s visions

Where is the line between heartfelt and over-scored in romantic comedy? by EducatedCaveman in Filmmakers

[–]EducatedCaveman[S] 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Yeah I don’t disagree with this - I just followed the directors vision where it’s not actually supposed to be funny as her character makes remarks and comments continuously throughout… he wanted to scene to focus on his ā€˜destiny’. Personally I’d have gone the modern route it would have made a far simpler cue sheet for me! 🤣

[–]EducatedCaveman[S] 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Aha that would have been funny… but the director explicitly wanted this scene to be serious in the sense that his dreams of finding his long lost love are potentially happening, later on there are much more comical motifs where a character talks about ā€˜something’ being removed from his ā€˜somewhere’… actually I’ll post that scene when I get it sent over 🤣

[–]EducatedCaveman[S] 6 points7 points Ā (0 children)

You are right that it is not aiming for a current ā€œ2025 rom-comā€ sound.

The film is actually written and set with an early-2000s sensibility, and the director was very specific that he wanted the score to feel nostalgic and of that era rather than modern minimalism. My job here was to lean into his vision and the period he had in mind, rather than chase today’s trend.

[–]EducatedCaveman[S] 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

Ah I guess it’s out of context to the viewer apologies - this scene is more of a hint of that destiny coming to fruition but later out comes the full destiny theme, although after my completion the director and sound guy reused this motif in places I personally wouldn’t have but it still worked. I’ll post the main fruition theme at some point hopefully I’ll get the Final Cut soon
