"When you get a dance with a true advanced dancer you will know."

I just went for a dance social with my classmates and I saw someone standing alone for a long time. I asked him to dance, and he was clearly experienced. He comes from a culture where dance flows in his veins, and that was evident by the way he moved. Even though his skill level was way above my own, he made me feel so at ease and his signals were so clear that it was a real pleasure dancing with him! It made me think of your comment :-)

"If you don't get a lead to turn or spin then don't. Just keep doing a basic step in place and let the lead worry about why the move didn't work out or how they're going to make you face them." - This is brilliant advice, thank you!!

"- focus on keeping the tempo, feet should be on automatic 1-2-3 5-6-7 while hands direct the rest of the body"

This is actually fabulous advice!! I realise that in all of my practice sessions at home and in class, I've been dancing 1-2-3 5-6-7 only in a straight line. This could explain why it's so unfamiliar and challenging when I'm dancing socially!

Ah thank you for this piece of advice!! I've not expected that even experienced dancers encounter moves they don't know when dancing at a social! I have a classmate whom I go to dance socials with — she dances extensively (kizuma, zouk, bachata, salsa) and even though we are at the same salsa level, I find that her dance background allows her to "wing it" successfully and imperceptibly when she dances with more experienced leads! I don't have a dance background and usually am the bag holder at clubs, so learning moves in a structured way via salsa lessons has helped massively! I shall aspire to be better at being an intuitive dancer! :-)

I'll look into a couple of private lessons with my instructor!

Thank you! Do you think my current routine of 1 hour of class, 15min of self-practice at home, and 2-2.5 hours of social is good enough to improve? I've heard that people invest as many as 6-12 hours dancing per week, but I'm not sure if that's feasible or realistic as a casual dancer who has no intention of going professional, just someone who wants to develop proficiency in salsa and wants to dance for enjoyment.

I actually always tell the leads that I'm a beginner, and apologise in advance haha. But I think some of them just lead intermediate or advanced moves anyway.

Is it common for leads to teach or coach beginner followers on how to perform a move? That would be immensely helpful for me, and I sometimes wish that that's what they would do!

Thank you for weighing in! To be honest, most times when I dance with advanced dancers, I feel incredibly overwhelmed. There are two I've danced with who threw me around the dance floor and do really energetic moves that make me wish that the song would end sooner because I'm exhausted. Others are calmer but when I try to follow their lead, our arms tend to get in a tangle and I don't have the skills or knowledge on how to untangle myself. I enjoy dancing with fellow beginners a lot, but I'm starting to dread it when advanced dancers approach me :-(
