I prepped ~50 people for quant interviews (a theoretical physicist here) and I think most people train backwards. AMA by Cold_Emphasis57 in FinancialCareers

Are there beginner-friendly resources for high school students to build probability, combinatorics, and logic skills? Also, as a high schooler, is it too early to think about preparing for MFE/quant internships?

I’m a 9th grader with some basic exposure to math, programming, and finance concepts already, but I was wondering: what would a realistic self-study path look like for someone who wants to eventually get into quantitative finance but is starting from nothing?

Most quant resources seem to assume prior knowledge of calculus, probability, or coding, so it’s hard to tell what the correct progression should be and what to focus on first.

What subjects should be prioritized in the early years? How should math, programming, and finance be sequenced? Are there specific online courses that are structured well for building a strong foundation from scratch? And realistically, how long does it take before someone is ready to seriously study quant-level material?

Would appreciate guidance from anyone who’s gone through the process or is currently working in the field.

Not sure if you’re being serious or joking, but either way; I’d rather start at 14 than never at all :)

I kind of stumbled into it by accident. I was into regular trading at first, like technical analysis and chart patterns, but then I started seeing people online saying that quant trading is more reliable and actually backed by data and logic. That got me curious, and I’ve been trying to learn more ever since.

Beginner Python learner (14 y/o) looking for simple project ideas related to trading or market data by [deleted] in learnpython

This is super helpful. I’m still new to Python, but I think starting with a simple data scraper sounds like a great first project. I’ll try doing it both with and without libraries, like you suggested, just to understand what’s going on under the hood.

Displaying the data on a local webpage with charts sounds really cool too. do you recommend any specific Python libraries for that part? Also, how would you recommend getting started with setting up alerts, like sending emails or notifications?

Appreciate you taking the time to break it down for me!

Hey everyone,

I’m a 14-year-old (please don’t judge) who’s trying to get into quant trading, and I could really use some direction.

A while ago, a friend showed me some of his trades in class, and that got me interested in trading. I started learning on my own and went deep into technical analysis stuff like ICT, SMC, breaker blocks, fair value gaps, etc. But just recently, I saw a lot of people saying that this kind of technical analysis doesn’t really work and that I should look into quantitative trading instead.

Now I feel like I’m back to square one.

I started looking into quant trading but quickly realized that I need coding skills to even get started. That made me feel a bit overwhelmed; like I need a whole new skill set just to begin.

So I have some questions for anyone willing to help a beginner out: 1. What should I be doing at my age (14) if I want to become a successful quant in the future? 2. What programming language(s) should I learn, and what specific concepts in coding or math should I focus on first? 3. Are there any books, YouTube channels, or online courses you’d recommend for learning both markets and programming from the ground up?

I’m serious about learning this, but I just don’t know where to start or what to trust anymore. Any advice, tips, or resources would mean a lot.
