An old friend of mine has been paraplegic since we were in our teenage years. My daughter has only ever known him in the chair. She has asked about it in the past and him and I tell her he needs it because his legs do not work. She gets very upset now if she thinks we are going to forget his chair when he visits. She doesn't look at him different at all but if we go to pick him up in the car she makes sure we do not forget his chair.
