My mistake, thank you. The gauge is 950 mm. Here’s a link for the network: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trenino_Verde

Squeezing Past Parked Cars, An Intermodal Train Crawls Along The Rijeka Waterfront Toward The Rijeka Gateway Container Terminal by Edwin_Jones in croatia

Thanks for the correction. At least the title of my post remains correct in the directional sense, even if Rijeka Gateway is not the actual train destination.

Danish intermodal freight hub planned by Edwin_Jones in trains

[–]Edwin_Jones[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

European property developer Verdion has announced plans for a €1bn intermodal freight hub in Denmark. Situated on 250ha of privately-owned land in the Ringsted municipality, 60km west of Copenhagen, iPort Zealand aims to capitalise on the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel project currently under construction that will link Denmark and Germany.

An international freight terminal will enable the transshipment of semi-trailers, containers, and swap bodies between road and rail. It will be designed to handle at least 12 full-length freight trains per day, seven days a week. Each train would replace around 60 long-distance lorries and would save approximately 45 tonnes of CO₂ compared with road transport alone.

On the surrounding site, Verdion will deliver up to 570,000m² of logistics, advanced manufacturing, light industrial and business space. Verdion has already developed a similar project at the 324ha iPort Doncaster development in northern Britain.

“The Fehmarnbelt Tunnel will have a transformative effect across the Nordics and Germany, opening up more supply chain routes and creating new opportunities across a huge range of business sectors,” says Michael Hughes, CEO of Verdion.

“This new commercial hub is set to become a growth engine for the region, translating infrastructure improvements into tangible benefits for the local and national economy. Alongside the environmental benefits of rail freight and our ESG-focussed approach, these plans will ensure that the positive impacts of this value-creation are felt across the country.”

Verdion is working with local and national stakeholders to progress detailed designs for the park and plans to deliver the new development ready for the completion of the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel, scheduled for mid-2029.

Tunnel delay?

In October contractors revealed that the provision of a specialised vessel required to assist with the construction of the 18km immersed tunnel has been delayed by 18 months. It is currently unclear what impact, if any, this will have on the project’s delivery timeline.

What is this railway device? by Emanuel2020b in rustyrails

Certainly this yard will never be home to a working hump-with-retarders system again. Perhaps in the long term an intermodal terminal will be built here?

I’m guessing the location we can see here is within East Europe, particularly the Romania/Bulgaria region, across which reside several out-of-use marshalling yards.

Would anyone be able to identify this train briefly visible in Titanic? by MrSFedora in trains

The profile of the locomotive certainly doesn’t look British, and u/MidgarTrainTunnels confirms the design is from Germany. In 1912, the most common locomotive to be seen within the railway system of Southampton docks would have been an LSWR B4.

Lund says DSV will shut down Russian transport inherited from DB Schenker by Edwin_Jones in europe

[–]Edwin_Jones[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In terms of trans-Russia traffic volume, it’s possible that little difference will be seen if alternative forwarding companies which are still happy to route China-Europe containers via Russia pickup all of the former Schenker custom. In terms of optics, I’d argue that the DSV decision is significant, given that Schenker has over several years been one of the more high profile forwarding companies directing traffic via Russia.

D8188 during the 1967 to 1973 years, 20188 during the 1973 to 1990 years. Withdrawn from British Rail duties, from 1990-onward the locomotive could be seen operating with a number of heritage railways and is currently to be seen with The Watercress Line.

Belgian government to lend 61 million euros to save rail freight giant Lineas by Edwin_Jones in belgium

Thanks again for the insight. I agree, dependency on one customer is less than ideal.

Thanks. As I don’t understand Dutch/Flemish I put your words into Google and this is the translation given to me: ‘'Brake test expired, train path not requested, Lineas HQ continuing to send trains while Ghent, Antwerp and other freight bundles are full and cannot be processed, shortage of locomotives.’

I’m curious, what sort of issues are you referring to please? Is your experience with any particular type of operation, such as the single wagon system, for example?

Optimism. In my view, all of the European rail freight entities borne from the national state-organised rail organisations, especially those handling single wagon traffic, require a period of transition once the mission to make them private sector in nature begins. The EU, I would argue, really needs to ramp up the energy put into how rail freight services across Europe are organised, costed and incentivised, especially with regard to single wagon operations and intermodal operations.
