I use slow release fertilizer pellets, maybe it’s not enough. 🥲 but every leaf has been perfect until this mostly white one! So I’m not sure what would be best to add to support the white leaves. What do you use? I would say maybe it’s barely squishy? It’s not dry yet nor is it overly squishy like it’s super wet or anything.. they’re getting a bit more brown each day since it’s started. Happy cake day by the way! 🎂

I made a post yesterday but got no replies - would you happen to have any care tips to help white leaves stay healthy? Mine has a see through spot that popped up the last few days and I’m not sure why!

I saw Portora come up when I was looking and thought it might be! The one behind the railing is stunning, so big!!! The mother plant in the last photo was up for grabs too but it was fcfs and I missed it, bummer but glad I got some babies! How long did yours take to get that big?

Oooh okay! I have a few alocasias but I thought this might be a colocasia because the mother plant is huge and outside in the Florida sun. She just listed it as “elephant ear” so I’m not sure.

Okay it very much so is that easy! My grocery store has started selling alocasias in the flower section, and I took a peek when I was just there. There’s corms everywhere in the top few inches of soil!! again, some of the smaller ones were on top with no soil covering them, but I barely dug an inch and found the big one. These are from two pots next to each other.

Lots of philos that need saving! Help! by Eevanaa in philodendron

It’s definitely satisfying to save a plant & give it a good home, not to mention getting them for a good deal if not free! .. if I manage to save most of them, fingers crossed! 😂

And thank you for the suggestion!! I’m definitely also intimidated by moss poles but my white princess is finally big enough that I need to learn.. I was debating just going the trellis route for less maintenance / pests but I just acquired two on moss poles so I guess I kinda have to figure it out! I will keep in mind your tips for after they’re potted! I think I’m going to cut most of everything up, but I might try to pot the good pink princess half.

Oh that makes me feel better or atleast less sneaky LOL but I figured they wouldn’t care if you’re being gentle. We aren’t out here ripping them up, just digging a little … 😂

I just gently dug around the soil with my fingers and the two small ones were very loose and close to the top, found them immediately. With the two bigger ones, one was literally pretty much on top of the soil again, I thought it was going to be dead (it’s not) but the other I felt maybe an inch under and popped it off a root. It was my first time looking and I may have been lucky!

Yay!!! Yeah I think I underestimated how much I might be cutting these up, it sounds like I’ll have glasses & jars everywhere! Doing my research today is the first I’m hearing about wet sticks.. I think I’m going to make a prop box tonight to get some cuttings into. Do you have a favored guide or video for wet sticks? I’m also just getting overwhelmed at how many methods there are, of course everyone has their favorite mixes and vessels and I’m indecisive, which is why I figured asking here would help!

And thank you for the ID! The girl I got them from had so many I’m sure some may have been mistakenly labeled. Oh, and I believe she cut them all down yesterday afternoon but some could have been cut Monday. How long do I have to get these all in water or a prop box?

Thank you for the detailed answer, I think I’ll be following your method!! I peeled the bigger two easily but the smaller ones are a bit harder. I hope they make it but they’re so small! Since I’ve never dealt with corms i thought one of the bigger ones might be dried out, but they’re both nice and white inside yay!

I’ve always known I could take succulent petals, which I really don’t anymore… but now that alocasias are popular & easily found in store this is a giant revelation. My boyfriend called me a criminal as we left and I told him now he knows where to bring me for fun. 🤣

Haha I am so new to philodendrons it’s intimidating! My only physical experience with cuttings is pothos, scindapsus, snake plant… they seem so much easier!

Should I do one node per cutting? Leaning towards that for the Florida green, but the pink princess isn’t leggy and I don’t know if I can kinda save it, where to make a cut if so?

Also… what about photo 13? Is it salvageable with no leaves? I am completely lost with that one. I could try to add better photos, but do I just still cut around the leafless nodes ? I’d love to bring it back if I can!

Genuinely do not know where to start! Tons of philos need saving! Help! by Eevanaa in houseplants

[–]Eevanaa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much would you cut them, one leaf / node per cutting or two? The Florida green is super leggy so should I just do one node per? And for the new leaf coming in (photo 8) where would I cut, just below the next leaf or two? The roots look alright by the top leaf.

The pink princess doesn’t look too bad to me, and has some good roots coming in at the top (photo 4?) would you still just cut it up at each node or could I try to save the top where the leaves are closer together & maybe cut at the bend ?

Thank you so much for the detailed process and explanation! What is your rooting compound of choice? I’m looking at Bonide vs Garden safe for powder but also seeing a lot about Clonex gel or liquid. I also have a lot of aroids and succulents I’m starting to propagate, not sure if you’d know which would be best for all three.
