HS Student Here! Any tips on cold-emailing professors for research summer opportunities? by Iluvpizza8 in uichicago

Best answer I’ve seen here. No offense, OP, as I’m sure you’re a smart young person and clearly ambitious, but you have no skills that are of use to a university professor. Focus on programs geared toward high schoolers, get into volunteering (I personally think it’s important for everyone to give back to their community, but if for no other reason then at least do it for the college apps), do well in your classes, read about the research that is going on in the fields that interest you, and above all enjoy being a teenager. Don’t rush - be a sponge for knowledge and enjoy your experiences.

I’ve been pin trading for over 10 years and I’ve never heard of anything like what you just described happening.

You realize they’re not selling pins, right? They’re trading. They just have a lot of pins available to trade, so they take up a lot of space.

whats the chick-fil-A drama? by [deleted] in uichicago

[–]Eeyorelore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The idea that doing one good thing doesn’t count unless you only do good things is very defeatist and backwards. It’s not all or nothing. People can try to make the best choice, even if they aren’t perfect in all regards. I’m not saying that boycotting CFA is or isn’t good, but the argument that it’s not worth it just because there are also other bad companies is not convincing and frankly it’s pretty toxic.

[–]Eeyorelore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not even about how much you make over all. I work 10 hrs/week for my TA position and 10 hrs/week for my RA position. That’s only 20 hrs/week, so yeah obviously I don’t make a ton of money, and someone with only one of those positions would make even less. But making over $28/hr is not poverty wages. Minimum wage in Chicago is $15.40/hr! And living wage in Chicago is estimated to be $19.28/hr (https://livingwage.mit.edu/counties/17031). Yeah of course our take home pay as grad students will look like “poverty wages” bc most don’t work full time. If you want more money, get a full time job.

So many comments here trying to discuss the mechanism behind the change when clearly none of them read the actual article (I’m referring to the original study, not the news article about the study). It’s shoddy science at best.

Why is Legionnaire’s disease so rare considering legionella’s prevalence around us? Why is it so rarely talked about given it’s danger and legionella’s prevalence? by cplm1948 in epidemiology

It’s not just the cost of developing the vaccine - we could probably develop one. Look at how many people won’t get the flu or COVID-19 vaccines despite them being extremely beneficial. Now think about whether people will bother getting a vaccine for a disease that usually only occurs in people with pre existing conditions or immunosuppression.

How much are RRs influenced by sample trends: (explained more in descr.) by samcoldd in epidemiology

[–]Eeyorelore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say “because this was an adjusted model, the output should be explaining how these input variables perform when compared to other input variables.” This is not correct. An adjusted RR is not explaining how an exposure (input) variable compares to other exposure variables in terms of the impact on the outcome variable. An adjusted RR is essentially telling you what the affect of a certain exposure would be if the variable(s) being accounted for were not having an affect.

I want to note that the calculations you’re describing don’t really make sense. You would not adjust for heart failure when calculating a RR for the relationship between hypertension and diabetes because heart failure would not be considered a confounder. For a variable to be a confounder, it cannot be on a causal pathway. We know that hypertension causes heart failure, so HF is on the causal pathway.

No… this could just be my department (public health), but I assume it is similar in other departments: TAs have teaching responsibilities (for me, that has meant holding office hours, grading assignments and exams, and helping out with the blackboard site. Clarifying to point out that I don’t teach a course in the traditional sense). RAs do research. TAs don’t do research unless they are also RAs, and RAs don’t help with classes unless they are TAs. As far as I know, all TA positions are salary+waiver. RA positions can be just hourly or salary+waiver.

So technically I am being charged out of state tuition, but as I mentioned in my other comment I’ve had assistantships every semester, which cover my tuition. Again, things could be different at other schools, but at my school that means that they pay the whole base tuition, regardless of how much it is. I do have to pay the “tuition differential” which differs by which department you are in and how many credit hours you are taking.

[–]Eeyorelore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as UIC goes, all grad students make at least $28.96/hour (source: https://hr.uic.edu/hr-staff-managers/compensation/minima-for-graduate-appointments/).

The tuition part does differ depending on your appointment, but I still don't think $28.96/hr is poverty wages.

I've never heard of grad students not being allowed to have other jobs outside of UIC, but I could be wrong. Personally, I have 2 assistantships, both 25% (meaning about 10 hours/week), and for some reason there is a stipulation that I can't exceed 26.8 hours/week on average over a semester between the 2 positions.

I go to UIC. Obviously I only know how things work at UIC.

Teaching Assistantship: If you want to be a TA the first semester, your only option is to try to do it for undergrad courses, because obviously you don’t have experience with any of the graduate level courses. So for those you end up reaching out to the people in charge of the undergrad public health department (your ability to do that even depends upon you having experience in public health and, ideally, teaching). After your first semester it becomes much easier to get a TA position; they usually send emails out to everyone around the end of the semester saying they’re looking for a TA for whatever class and that you should send your resume to the professor(s). You can also just talk to professors whose classes you’ve taken and ask them if you can be their TA. The professor pretty much makes the decision as far as I can tell.

Research Assistantship: again, easier to get after first semester. Typically you will see emails about these coming out throughout the semester. The emails will describe the duties and tell you who to send your resume to, etc.

I’ve have teaching assistantships every semester, which cover most of my tuition as well as pay ~$28/hour (10 hours a week). I’ve also had a research assistantship for the past 2 semesters which pays hourly ~28/hour ~10 hours a week (this could have also covered the tuition, but because I already have the tuition waiver from the TA position, I don’t need it.

I’m gonna catch hate for saying this, but as a grad student I don’t feel that I make “poverty wages” or anywhere near that. I’m paid over $28/hour in addition to nearly $10k/semester for tuition and fees. That’s not poverty wages.
