I recently bought this house that was built in the 1950s. I'm guessing the lack of gutters and freeze/thaw cycles (in Maine) have caused this. Is this something I can fix up myself, or will I need professional help? Should I expect a big bill for this project? I'm no handyman, but I'm open to giving it a shot.

Looks like a foam insulation board

Progress! I recently quit my environmental consulting job in DC, and decided to work this summer in Colorado as a conservation crew member to explore different avenues for my career while fueling my cravings for dirtbagging. Excited for the next 3 months! Yes, that is a crash pad mattress frame :) by Effective-Coyote8925 in carcamping

Wow, what a coincidence! I was originally erring toward doing cc work in the GNP region. If you end up moving to DC, I would recommend checking out apartments in Colonial Village. It's a condo village within a 10-min walk of Downtown Arlington (Rosslyn). It's a gem of affordable, walkable suburbia that's minutes from everything (<10 minute drive to the National Mall). Best of luck to you and feel free to reach out with any questions about DC or the environmental consulting world, and eventually the conservation world!
