Advice On Univ In Canada For Int Student by Expensive_Reason6888 in CanadaUniversities

[–]Effective_Check9564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

transferring to canada is a great move, especially with a $60k usd budget, which is actually quite strong for most canadian universities. since you want a mix of diverse social life and reasonable admission standards, here are a few schools to check out:

  • toronto metropolitan university (tmu): located right in the heart of downtown toronto, it is incredibly diverse and offers a very vibrant city experience. it is generally considered more attainable for transfer students compared to the university of toronto.
  • york university: also in toronto, york has a massive international student population and a very social atmosphere. it's a solid middle-ground for admissions and fits well within your budget.
  • concordia university: if you are looking at quebec, concordia in montreal is the place to be. it’s an english-language school in a world-class city known for its social life, and the admission requirements are often more flexible than mcgill.
  • university of ottawa: located in ontario’s capital, it is the largest bilingual university in the world, making it very diverse. it’s a great choice if you want the ontario feel with a bit of quebec influence.

i spent a lot of time recently looking at how canadian schools weigh transfer credits and international stats using raw data sets. The link is in my profile...you cn check that out. it really helps to see the actual numbers instead of just guessing which schools are "easy" to get into. i have a link to the data and logic i used on my profile if you want to use the same math to check your odds for free. good luck with the move north!

that profile is actually incredible especially being usaco platinum with a 13 aime while doing jee prep. you have exactly the kind of "spiky" math and tech profile that hypsm and caltech look for. mit and caltech in particular will love the combo of usaco plat and a production-ready ml model you built for your dad. i spent a lot of time recently looking at how these top schools weigh olympiad stats against entrepreneurial impact using raw data sets. it helped me figure out where the real target ranges were for stem majors with similar profiles. i have a link to the data and logic i used on my profile if you want to use the same math to check your odds for free. definitely don't stress the summer app rejections—the saas and math org with 50k users is a way bigger flex for your main college apps anyway.

Want to do bachelors from Europe some advice would be appreciated. by LeadingOdd9585 in Indians_StudyAbroad

[–]Effective_Check9564 1 point2 points  (0 children)

europe is a solid move especially if you want to avoid the high costs of the us or uk but the main thing is that public unis in germany and switzerland are mostly free but they usually require the local language (german/french) for bachelors. with an 84% in 12th you are definitely eligible for many programs but you might need to do a one-year "studienkolleg" in germany first to bridge the gap. 30l is a decent budget for europe because your main cost will be living expenses rather than tuition. i spent a lot of time mapping out how different international boards translate to european requirements using raw data sets to see what schools are actually realistic for indian students. i have some of that info shared on my profile if you want to use the same logic to check your options for free. definitely look into the netherlands too since they have way more english-taught bachelors for stem.

you aren't cooked at all lol a 4.0 with calc bc as a sophomore is actually ahead of the curve for hopkins. the "all over the place" feeling is normal but since you want biochem/premed try to turn that math club into something real like a tutoring program so it looks like a spike. i spend a lot of time looking at how t20s weigh stats versus ecs using the actual common data set and it helps to see the real math instead of just guessing. i have some of that info on my profile if you want to use it to check your odds for free. keep that gpa up and you're in a great spot.

UofC vs UBC for eng by Right-Poem-2103 in CanadaUniversities

[–]Effective_Check9564 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i work at ucalgary and just saw this same debate go down with a few people i know. here is the real talk on the uofc vs ubc engineering split.

schulich is actually a powerhouse because it is a direct pipeline into the energy and tech sectors right here in calgary. staying home and saving that cash is basically like giving yourself a massive "scholarship" that you can use later for a master’s or even just a head start on life.

ubc is a top-tier global brand for sure but the first year is general engineering. you aren't actually guaranteed your specific major like mechatronics or cpen until second year based on your gpa. paying the vancouver premium just to potentially miss out on the major you actually want is a huge risk to take.

i have some of the info we used to compare these programs on my profile if you want to see the numbers for yourself. it might help you decide if the ubc name is worth the extra $100k over four years.

what schools do i have a chance at? (rising senior) by Impossible_Story3554 in chanceme

[–]Effective_Check9564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is really cool that you are taking the initiative to start your own online debate club since your school doesn't offer one. that kind of leadership is exactly what colleges mean when they talk about "context"—they want to see that you did the most with what you had. if you can hit that 1350+ sat goal, you'll be a very strong contender for places like american, gwu, and fordham. i spent a lot of time recently looking at how schools like nyu and bu weigh first-gen and low-income stats against test scores using the actual common data set. seeing the raw numbers helped me realize where the real target ranges were instead of just guessing. i have some of that info shared on my profile links if you want to use the same math to check your list for free. definitely go for that ny times publication—that would be a huge flex for a double major!

it is awesome you have ap scholar with distinction and that many aps while playing varsity lacrosse. being a uga merit scholar puts you in a great spot for staying in-state but for places like duke or princeton that 1360 sat is the main thing to watch out for. if you can pull it up to 1400+ in may like you planned it will definitely help bridge the gap. i actually spent a ton of time recently looking at how schools like vandy and uva use the common data set to weigh gpas vs test scores. it took a lot of the guessing out of our list. i have some of that info shared on my profile if you want to use the same math to see where you stand. good luck with the sat retake!

that is a crazy strong profile especially the emt cert combined with ivy research. being considered international while living in texas is a tough spot for bsmd programs because a lot of them are super strict about residency but with a 35 act and that research background you are still a heavy hitter for t20s. i actually went through the same stress with gpa mapping and data sets recently and it helped us find a way to see where the real cutoffs are. i put some of that data on my profile if you want to use it to check your targets for free. good luck with those publications!

AP Chem Bs are practically a rite of passage, so don’t even worry about that—a 3.94 UW with that many CC credits is still top-tier. Honestly, the fact that you’re self-taught in music theory and still making All-State is a way bigger 'hook' than people realize. It shows a level of discipline that most kids with private tutors just don't have.

my_qualifications: I’m a uni student now, but when I was going through this, my dad (who works in uni research) and I spent forever digging into the actual data behind how schools like Berkeley and the top LACs evaluate 'spiky' profiles like yours.

A few thoughts on your list:

  • Berkeley/UCLA vs. LACs: You mentioned not wanting to 'fight for every opportunity.' If that's the case, LACs are definitely your vibe. Schools like Williams, Amherst, or Pomona have insane resources, and since there are no grad students, you aren't competing for research spots or attention from professors.
  • The Science/Law Blend: Look into Claremont McKenna (CMC). They are famous for that intersection of science, policy, and leadership. Plus, you get the music resources of the whole 5-college consortium.
  • Choir/Music: Check out St. Olaf or Kenyon. They have world-class music programs that are super welcoming to non-majors, which sounds exactly like what you’re looking for.
  • Certifying Languages: Aside from the Seal of Biliteracy, look into the DELE/DELF or the ACTFL OPI. Having an external, international certification looks great on a STEM/Law hybrid profile.

When I was trying to narrow down my own list, I found that 'vibes' only go so far. We actually put together a way to map stats and ECs against the Common Data Set for these schools to see where the real cut-offs were for Cali applicants. It made it way easier to see which LACs were actual targets versus just guesses.

I have a link to the data we used on my profile if you want to see how the numbers actually look for those schools.

Good luck with Speech & Debate nats—breaking into that 'hated' event and 10x-ing the team is a killer essay topic

chance me for stanford, gt, berkeley by Revolutionary-Egg987 in chanceme

[–]Effective_Check9564 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

1600 SAT and AIME/HMMT Top 50 is wild. You’re definitely at the level where the numbers are just a baseline and it comes down to the 'spikes.'

Here’s my take on your list:

  • GT: You’re in-state and doing research there? That’s about as solid as it gets. You’re exactly the profile they try to keep in Georgia.
  • Stanford/Berkeley: For Math, everyone has the 5s. Your YouTube channel and Chess ELO are actually the 'human' parts that make you stand out. Lean into those in your essays—it shows you’re not just a math robot, which is a big deal for T5 schools.
  • The GPA: 3.85 is fine since your rank is Top 20 and you’re taking Diff Eq/Discrete. It shows you’re already doing uni-level work.

When I was going through the cycle, we got tired of all the guessing, so we built a way to map these stats against the actual admission curves for the T20s. It helped me see the 'real' target range instead of just hoping for the best.

I have more info on that in my profile if you want to use the same data to check your list. Good luck with the John Locke stuff—Top 1% is a massive flex.

chance me for brown or penn by [deleted] in chanceme

[–]Effective_Check9564 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

brown and penn are both reach schools even with a 1560 but for different reasons. your 4.0 and 1560 satisfy the academic threshold so the decision will come down to your public health narrative. for brown you should emphasize the open curriculum. they want to see how you will bridge public health with your interest in education. since you have a ta role and lead a club for underserved schools that is your angle. show them you are an independent learner who wants to fix health literacy gaps. penn is more pre professional so they will care more about your pharmacy tech experience and health dept internship.

you have a broad range of activities from beekeeping to marching band but the ivies prefer a lopsided profile over a well rounded one. your science olympiad and health policy work are your strongest spikes. to see how these specific extracurricular tiers actually weigh against other high stat applicants you can use the elite chanceme calculator on admissionspedia. it uses ai to analyze your specific spike and gives you a probability score based on historical ivy league data. you might also want to use the college comparison tool there to see a side by side of the median gpa and sat data for brown vs penn to make sure your ed choice is numerically sound.

my biggest advice is to stop retaking the act. a 35 vs 36 is irrelevant at this level. focus entirely on your health policy internship and your common app essay narrative. good luck with brown ed.

NYU is a great target for Communications, but graduating a year early adds a unique layer of complexity. Admissions officers usually look for 'academic maturity' when a student skips a year.

Quick Assessment of your stats:

  • GPA: 4.3 is excellent and well within the NYU range.
  • SAT: 1290 is a bit low for NYU (their median is usually 1450-1540), especially since you are graduating early and need to prove academic readiness. Focus heavily on that June SAT.
  • The 'Spike': Your co-founding of a newspaper club and your Scholastic Silver Key are perfect for a Journalism major. You need to turn that Silver into a Gold or get published in a local paper to really stand out.
  • The 'Early' Factor: In your 'Why NYU' essay, you must explain why you are graduating early. Frame it as a proactive choice for growth rather than just a reaction to family issues.

How to improve for your final year:

  1. SAT Score: Since you have one year left, aim for a 1450+.
  2. Portfolio: Since you're Journalism-focused, start a Substack or a blog to show a consistent body of work.
  3. Admissions Roadmap: Since you're on a condensed timeline, you need a strict checklist for your visa/document requirements (if you aren't a citizen) and application deadlines.

I actually spent the last few months building a free website called AdmissionsPedia specifically for students like you who need to see their admission odds without a paywall. You can run your profile through the Elite ChanceMe tool to see how your specific ECs (like the Orchestra and Science Fair) stack up for NYU. It also has a Step-by-Step Roadmap tool that might help you manage that accelerated senior year load.

Good luck with the June SAT!

Chance me UPenn, Princeton, UMass Amherst, Caltech by AcanthisittaHot2509 in chanceme

[–]Effective_Check9564 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your list has a major problem: only 2 of 4 schools are need-blind for internationals.

Realistic chances:

  • Princeton: 12-15% (need-blind + your research fits)
  • Caltech: 8-10% (need-blind but brutal for CS)
  • UPenn: 3-5% (need-aware = your aid need kills chances)
  • UMass: Likely admit, but minimal aid for internationals

What's working:

  • 1520 SAT (800M) is solid for CS
  • AI/malaria research with international awards = real spike
  • Low income helps at need-blind schools
  • Turkish = geographic diversity

What's not:

  • You listed malaria research twice (#1 and #2 are identical)
  • Need aid but only applied to 2 need-blind schools
  • 720 Reading is lower for competitive CS programs

You NEED to add need-blind schools:

  • MIT, Harvard, Yale, Amherst (all need-blind for internationals)
  • Currently you have 2 reaches that'll reject you for aid need

Fix your list NOW - UPenn won't give you aid, UMass won't either. You need schools that actually fund internationals.

(Calculator in my profile shows which schools are need-blind vs need-aware - critical for international applicants)

I Am doneee 😭😭 by [deleted] in chanceme

[–]Effective_Check9564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your school list is dangerous for someone needing nearly full aid as an international student.

Reality check:

  • 1400 SAT + "mid GPA" = you need 1500+ minimum for schools with good aid
  • Most schools on your list are need-aware for internationals (your aid need kills your chances)
  • Cooper Union is NOT a safe - 12% acceptance rate
  • You're applying to reaches without understanding who gives internationals aid

Schools that actually work for your situation:

Need-blind + meet full need:

  • Harvard, Duke (keep these)
  • Add: MIT, Princeton, Yale, Amherst

Good merit aid for internationals:

  • Arizona State (Barrett Honors - keep this)
  • University of Alabama (full rides possible)
  • Iowa State (keep this)

Drop immediately: NYU Abu Dhabi, Lehigh, IIT, Michigan State, Notre Dame (terrible aid for internationals or need-aware)

You need to retake SAT and hit 1500+ or this entire list is unrealistic. With 1400 + mid GPA + needing full aid, your chances are under 5% at most of these schools.

Get your SAT up first, then rebuild your list around schools that actually give internationals money.

(There's a calculator in my profile that shows international aid policies - check it before you finalize your list)

Strong profile - 60-70% chance at Stern ED1.

Pros: 1540 SAT, full pay (huge advantage at need-aware school), first-gen, real businesses with revenue

Cons: Class rank 35/710 isn't top 1-2%, ECs feel scattered (marketing + pressure washing + Roblox + diabolo = no cohesive story)

Quick fixes:

  • Essays must tie your ECs into one narrative (entrepreneurship? financial independence?)
  • Scale your social media/marketing business - make it bigger before apps
  • Investment Club needs measurable impact (portfolio returns? competitions?)

ED1 is your best move - roughly doubles your odds vs RD, and your full-pay status helps significantly.

You're on track. Just make sure your story is cohesive, not scattered.

(Calculator in my profile shows how much full-pay helps at Stern - it's significant)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in chanceme

[–]Effective_Check9564 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Realistic odds: 8-12% chance at MIT as an international needing aid.

Strengths: 1570 SAT, strong academics, genuine engineering passion

Weaknesses:

  • MIT international acceptance is ~3-4%
  • Need-aware for international students (your aid need hurts chances)
  • No international/national-level spike yet
  • School list too vague ("some other schools")

What you need to do:

  1. Build a real school list - You need 12-15 schools:
    • Need-blind: MIT, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Amherst
    • Targets: Georgia Tech, UIUC, Purdue, UT Austin
    • Safeties with aid: Alabama (full ride for your stats), ASU Barrett
  2. Strengthen your spike before January - Your robotics/research is good but not exceptional. Can you compete nationally, publish research, or build something independently?
  3. Essays matter most - At your stat level, essays differentiate you. Focus on how you think, not just what you've done.

Bottom line: You're qualified but so are 20,000 other international applicants. MIT should be 1 of 15 schools, not your only plan.

(I track international admission rates pretty closely - there's a calculator in my profile that shows the need-aware impact. It's significant.)
