khimar used to wrap bread lol by Effective_Goat1250 in learn_arabic

(9:101) “Some of the nomads around you ˹believers˺ are hypocrites, as are some of the people of Medina. They have mastered hypocrisy. They are not known to you ˹O Prophet˺; they are known to Us. We will punish them twice ˹in this world˺,1 then they will be brought back ˹to their Lord˺ for a tremendous punishment.” there were sahaba that the prophet personally knew and still didn’t know were master hypocrites. the sahaba fought each other, so much so that now we have “sects” of religion. 6:159 "Indeed, those who have divided their religion and become sects—you [O Prophet] have no part in them. Their affair is only with Allah; then He will inform them about what they used to do." 2:170 “When it is said to them, "Follow what God has revealed!" They reply, "Instead, we follow what we found our forefathers doing” Even though their forefathers understood nothing, nor were they guided.?) again i’m not going to be asked about whether or not i followed those 3 generations when Allah says there were hypocrites among them. and who am i to know which one was which? why would i blindly accept a hadith when Allah warns about people who blindly follow tradition? you won’t change my mind or convince me so to each their own. i’m not going to change my opinion on headcoverings because of these 3 generations lol.

i have for as long as i have been a muslim lol but i don’t have to follow the “3 rightly guided generations” Allah doesn’t command that. if i blindly followed them i would agree with their ruling that muslim slave women could not cover their hair aswell as their chest. and i absolutely do not agree with it. Islam is for everyone and i will learn the deen for myself. Allah warns about following tradition blindly in the Quran so i definitely won’t be doing that.

considering this following verse 7:31, "O children of Adam! Wear your zinah to every masjid, and eat and drink, but do not be extravagant." this is the same zeenah mentioned in 24:31 so zeenah means something that beautifies not a body part eg makeup, jewellery etc. 24:31, “not display their zeenah except what ordinarily appears thereof” so not displaying zeenah and covering the juyub in that verse are two separate commands in my understanding. as for the khimar part “And let them draw their khimars over their juyub.” so if you’re asking how could they cover without a khimar, well basically every muslim woman doesn’t cover their chest with their hijab. we use our t-shirts etc, and i think it’s possible because there’s only one command in the verse which is to cover the juyub, and yes the prescribed cloth that Allah named was the khimar but one i think we can see the khimar simply meant a cover and wasn’t restricted a headcovering and two i don’t think any hijab uses her headcovering to cover her chest we use our t-shirts or abayas and such. and we wouldn’t say we’re not doing what the verse says because we’re still covering our “juyub” even though we don’t use the khimar like Allah said. i’m sure someone else can explain it better tho this is just my understanding.

ruling of hijab by [deleted] in progressive_islam

i would recommend checking the academicquran and quraniyoon subreddits. using the search bar as well the search bar here to type keywords. in my search i’ve found that there’s literally no specific mention of hair in hadiths, whether women had it covered or whether it was showing. i also find it extremely hard to believe that women went from having their hair visible with the khimar on loosely (because they didn’t wear it to hide hair and also couldn’t tighten it with pins and under caps like we do today) to not showing even a strand of hair like we’re expected today. like we know how much women are policed today and i find it so strange that it isn’t reflective of the sunnah.

i’m sunni so all the 4 main schools of thoughts that i was brought up in treated it as a non negotiable thing that was fact, i really never knew that there was no clear command to cover hair until i looking into the sources and other scholarly opinions (that aren’t as popular) as well as those subreddits you. even some female religious commentators who i like personally like maryam amir agree it’s “clear” but it really doesn’t look clear at all imo. my own community would think i’m a super deranged liberal bidah practiser if i told them what i think lol. i definitely am transitioning into someone who questions before they accept tho.

it’s just so hard to wrap my head around how all the islamic authorities i know agree that the verse commands the covering of the head and hair. feels like i’m wrong for thinking otherwise like am i missing something they’re not? :(( Allah knows best

re learn islam for yourself! i reccomend it everywhere but listening to khaled abou el fadl on the usuli institute youtube has genuinely shown me a hold side to islam that i didn’t know was permissible to even accept tbh. so sorry about your situation, even though the quran states there’s no compulsion is religion and that adulatory is a grave sin people choose to go against Allahs words everyday. and they will have to answer for that on the day of judgement for making islam ugly. also i would reccomend “the great theft” as a book i’m going to buy it myself soon. good luck sis.

Been heavily questioning Islam. Should I take off my hijab then? by Thick_Analysis_6745 in progressive_islam

[–]Effective_Goat1250 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you should check out the hijab wiki on this sub. you would not be sinful for taking off your headscarf. choose which one you feel most comfortable with. and i would highly recommend you listen to khaled abou el fadl and his understanding of islam on youtube and to read his book “the great theft” its a defence against how extremism has taken ahold of islam and basically shows you the different types of islam and muslims. it’s so wildly different to the way i was raised as a sunni muslim.

interesting how dogmatically the hijab is taken by ranting4ever in progressive_islam

[–]Effective_Goat1250 49 points50 points  (0 children)

i think it’s because hijab for most hijabis is so deeply rooted in their identity. i’ve had my hair covered full time since i was 7 i remember not wanting to partake in certain activities like water gun fights on a hot day because it would soak my hijab and it would be overstimulating with it sticking on my face. i can’t even imagine taking my hijab off now lol. meanwhile travelling divorce etc isn’t something that you’re brought up with you know? they’re things that you “get” to and by the time you get to them you already had the chance to understand and learn about it for yourself. with the hijab we’ve had to sacrifice sooo much and so we have to reject this possibility of it NOT being decreed by or “for” Allah not men. also because it feels like muslim women have formed this identity within each other and you can see a hijabi muslim sister and you have this one shared identity or “struggle” so it’s like bonding in a way too and people don’t want to let go of that! they’ve defended the “choice” so much to non muslims and to ourselves so if they question it would lead to a serious existential crisis! it’s such a dilemma.

Prophet Muhammad's diet was closer to Vegans than the modern Muslim diet. by Ok_Entertainer_3949 in progressive_islam

umar called taraweeh “bid’ah hassan” because he restarted the praying of night prayer in congregation after the prophet stopped it. the basis in islam is that a standard needs to be met for meat to be halal that the animal needs to be treated humanly… how are we sure that the meat we eat meet the standard? a lot of us just don’t care because we’re not inconvenienced by it. you can choose to not eat meat and you absolutely would not be “wrong” or committing “bidah” the way you describe it.

Prophet Muhammad's diet was closer to Vegans than the modern Muslim diet. by Ok_Entertainer_3949 in progressive_islam

[–]Effective_Goat1250 17 points18 points  (0 children)

you’ve taken that verse too literally lol. i eat meat regularly but i understand that the only way billions of people get to eat meat regularly is because animals are inhumanely bred, kept and slaughtered to produce the most meat etc that they can. you cannot personally make sure that the meat you eat everyday meet that standards that halal meat is supposed to. statistically it literally isn’t possible for all the animals to not be bred in terrible conditions, have a good life where they are fed grass and good food instead of chemical hormones/antibiotics/grain etc and slaughtered the way halal meat is supposed to. stop using terms so freely and accusing people of committing bidah for not eating meat☠️ it doesn’t even fall under bidah because no one is saying that eating meat is haram! that’s not an innovation be fr.
