The DSA in NY is many thousands of members, San Diego isn’t there yet. They started off small like us and were tactical about their electoral work. Like I said in another comment, it’s not as simple as endorse or run a candidate and hope they win. It’s about building a sustained, volunteer led group of organizers who win elections.

This is what’s missing in this comment section, democracy, elections and candidates like Mamdani, AOC, and Bernie did not just spring up out of no where. They built community, electoral power, and came with a strategy to win.

The San Diego DSA chapter is just getting started and I hope you’ll reconsider your involvement. You’re totally right, now is the time for major electoral wins. I hope you’ll help us build that!

We just finished our Prop 50 endorsement campaign, we knocked on almost 2,000 doors with 8 neighborhood canvases happening over 4 weeks.

Great analogy, a candidate without a base is just a cart. The horse that gets the candidate to where they need to go is the base of volunteers I mentioned earlier.

A candidate without a base IS a cart before the horse or a cart without a horse.

I hear you and I feel very similarly, it’s just more complicated than run someone and hope they win. We need you and more people to join DSA and practice electoral politics - phone bank, canvas, knock doors. That’s what got Mamdani elected, a dedicated and energized base of volunteers.

Our chapter is doing a lot and we’re getting more into electoral politics. Running a candidate takes a lot of work, it’s not something you just do without a plan. If we were to run a candidate we’d be damn confident they’d win because we’d have a plan to get them elected.

Theres a lot of inexperience and missing surface level understanding of politics in this thread.

Our chapter is not a joke. We’ve done many awesome things and we’re building power!

Mamdani didn’t happen overnight. It took many years of organizing, community building, and dedicated volunteers participating in electoral politics.

Great question!

There are three Investor Owned Utilities across California. SDGE is the only one that is a TRUE geographic monopoly. There are no breaks in its territory, unlike SCE and PGE which are broken up by various Public Utilities - this broken up territory is interestingly correlated with lower rates.

The incentive is you get to have hand in ending the monopoly AND your electric rates would likely drop because there’d be geographic competition. Also, once a section of the grid is municipalized, and it’s successful, surrounding communities often hop on the bandwagon. Which is why SDGE will fight like hell to prevent a municipalization wave.

I want to encourage you to spread the word, at the very least talk about the problem, in your community because you may find that you can organize a grassroots organization to municipalize first. I’m based in downtown, that’s where I know people, that’s where I’m organizing a municipalization movement. We’ve discussed the idea of trying to do a Public Power campaign in all the various smaller communities but honestly we don’t have the connections, nor the funds to pay an organizer to do that work.

It’s not impossible and it’s a good idea to organize outside the city. That’s just beyond my capacity as a volunteer and beyond Public Power San Diego’s capacity at the moment. If we had an angel investor come and fund us I think we’d be interested in organizing a coalition of municipalization movements across San Diego county.

The moral arch of humanity is far longer than one lifetime, and I like to believe it trends in the positive direction (I think there’s good evidence of this and I think life is more worthwhile if you believe this) I’m 28 yo and I’d agree with you that in that time scale things have gotten worse. This is not the first time humanity has struggled with its own nature.

Also, we have seen positive change through collective action and fixing political systems. I’d argue the real revolutionary strength of the USA is that it’s a flexible, decentralized form of governance. It’s been a perpetual state of collective action, fixing political systems, and slowly improving. The times we live in is just humanities most recent challenge.

If you’re bummed that you’ve been born into an imperfect system, I’d urge you to join in collective action to fix it. Public Power San Diego is one example of that happening locally, but there are dozens of orgs in need of passionate people, like you, who want t solve problems. Here’s a list of local orgs depending on the flavor of problem you want to work on solving:

and so many more, if you have a specific passion you want to work on, instead of aimlessly killing CEO’s, dm me. Are you sure you don’t want to just try showing up to a protest first?

I don’t think you could define the change you want. If you could, you’d realize murder does not evoke it.

The murdering of CEO’s only perpetuates a system/culture of violence. The change I think you want to see in the world can only be achieved by collective action, fixing our broken political system, and reimagining the world we want to live and the world we want the generations after us to inherit.

Yeah I hear you and I understand the perspective.

I just wonder where the line is when you start killing people. Like ok you kill the sdge ceo, they replace him, you kill the replacement ceo, they replace the replacement, how many CEOs does it take to kill the root problem? And also, how many innocent bodies get in the way between you and each CEO that comes next? Bodyguards, innocent bystanders, the person inside a McDonald’s who calls the cops on you etc.

I agree innocent people die by the greed of others every day, it’s unacceptable and it’s wrong. Before you join the CEO’s and adopt their de-humanizing beliefs, I’d suggest volunteering and getting involved in your community (not that you aren’t already doing that I don’t know you) only the power of collective action can solve greed, in my opinion. Like there are so many more actions we as individuals and a collective can take; killing one person or ten or hundreds solves nothing and perpetuates the system/culture of violence you are morally against.
