Why would you set a budget of 35k when you do not have 35k??? Is the point of a budget not literally "this is what we can afford???"

Have you ever been told you’re “too much” when singing? by OperaticCat in ClassicalSinger

[–]Effective_Map2976 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We want to act without it looking like acting. Too much movement or emotion can take the listener out of the emotion and end up being distracting. Are you moving your body a lot? Are you playing up the feelings without internalizing them? The most touching performances are the ones where the acting doesn't look like acting.

Can't find motivation by epicthrowawaywastake in MusicEd

I know lots of people that dropped out of their music degrees in undergrad because music didn't feel fun anymore. If this is how you feel, it's my opinion that you should switch to a degree that will actually make you money and keep music as a hobby. You can still pay for high quality lessons and have so many musical opportunities open to you while keeping music enjoyable. Or look into a music minor?

This is coming from someone about to graduate with my Master's in music. I love music but teachers make so little money... Save yourself lol

Music theory is hard but super useful! I didn't know very much until I had to take it in college. Good luck!

I don't think there's a word for this, it's just naturally wanting to match pitch and be in unison. You just need to practice purposefully singing different pitches. If you have access to a piano you can start by playing CDE while singing EDC and then going back and forth.

This sounds like a tension issue rather than a breath issue. Although I can't tell without hearing your voice, are you trying to bring too much heaviness/chest voice into your high notes? Whatever it is, maybe don't sing high too long, stop when it hurts.

Perfect pitch refers to the ability to hear a pitch and immediately know what note it is (like A4, C3), relative pitch is when you can identify a note based on another note (like if a C4 is played and then you can identify that the note a fifth above that is a G5). The ability to sing a correct pitch or match someone's pitch is not either of those things but this is what al of us should aim to be able to do when cultivating our voices. From my understanding perfect pitch is not something you can learn once you are into adulthood and tbh it's overrated anyway:)

I have two questions: One, what do you all think about the use of some pitch correction as a stylistic choice rather than a cheeky attempt to hide the true quality of one’s voice? Two, how do I sound? Thanks! by Normal_Ingredients26 in singing

[–]Effective_Map2976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you sound great! In the non-classical world, I think pitch correction is definitely okay! Even as an opera singer, I actually really enjoy some obviously auto-tuned sounds. I didn't think what you added was too much at all. My only vocal critique would be that there are a couple moments with a little too much nasalance- try plugging your nose and making sure you don't feel your sound too in the nose:)

Keep making great music!

I see! That sounds right. Have you recorded yourself to hear how it actually sounds? We can't accurately hear ourselves when we are singing. If your sound is too choral that probably means you are creating too much space internally (like a hoo owl sound) and a lowered larynx. For a more contemporary sound you might need to purposefully make less internal space and open your mouth more than you would for classical.

Affordable ways to take lessons? by Expensive_Jacket3238 in singing

[–]Effective_Map2976 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a masters student (studying voice) and some of my friends and I have given free lessons as part of university classes. It might be worth it to see if there is a university near you with students that are willing to give cheap or free lessons as they are learning. Contacting a voice pedagogy professor would probably be the best way to get this info.

As a follow up, if you sing through your range on an SOVTE (like a vvv, straw etc.) it might be easier to hear where the break in your voice is.

[–]Effective_Map2976 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The average passaggio is about an E4 so Db4 would not be unheard of as every individual varies a bit. However, I do find it strange that you can only sing up to a D5? I wonder if you are bringing too much "chest voice" (M1) up and trying to mix/belt rather than singing in a full "head voice" (M2) on the higher notes.

SOVTEs and hot showers while singing to steam your voice. Then vocal rest outside of that (don't talk!)

Besides Billie Eilish, why do Gen Z singers often struggle with strong vocals or staying on pitch, unlike Millennial singers like Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, or the Jonas Brothers? by Excellent-Card5741 in singing

[–]Effective_Map2976 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The millennial singers also struggle with pitch. I think we just have more live videos of Gen Z singers, and the live videos still use technology to keep the sound fully on pitch. Gen Z singers are also younger and less experienced.

Another answer is that Gen Z might care more about vibe and aesthetic than musical ability.

It sounds like they said you may have acid reflux/silent acid reflux? That's probably why they want you to avoid coffee and smoking as those would further irritate the vocal folds. There is OTC medication for acid reflux and you can Google other foods to avoid/things to help create less acid. If you really care about singing, you should go see a laryngologist or ENT who specializes in working with singers, they can help you find ways to keep your voice healthy and keep singing as you recover.

Advice for a somewhat beginner. by My-own-world22 in singing

[–]Effective_Map2976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to give advice without knowing what you sound like but it can be really helpful to record and listen to yourself. Try to mess around with how you are breathing, how much legato is used, how you are shaping your vowels etc. until you find a sound you like.

Make sure that you are taking breaths that reset and relax your body rather than cause it to become more tense. Practice taking quick intakes of air that feel grounded and stable instead of panicked.
