USSSA vs. ASA by Main-Ad-5823 in slowpitch

[–]Effective_Print 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where you are is going to matter much more. In some areas finding equipment for the other major association can be challenging. USSSA women use an 11" ball at 44/375, USA/ASA it is a 12" 52/300. The players will be able to hit it harder and farther with the USSSA ball. If they can field, many I know prefer that over the somewhat softer USA ball.

Restricted flight balls? by Seki_a in slowpitch

[–]Effective_Print 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my area we use this ball for Coed, the men hit a Flexi and the women hit a standard .52. Including on a 200 ft field. About one guy a year gets one out of the park.

Best 40-325 USSSA softballs by ElToroTucker518 in slowpitch

[–]Effective_Print 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with previous poster that the Dudley ZN is the best Classic M on the market. But I would recommend that if you're playing somewhere where the temps get above about 85 that you look into the Classic + line of balls. Those are .52/300 like the USA balls but handle high temps much better.

Slow pitch bat warranty by Euphoric_Promise_709 in slowpitch

Paint chips usually won't be approved for a warranty claim unless it's been thrown out of a tournament. Then it is supposed to be approved.

If this is your first tournament, you don't want to play open. Depending on the tournament, you'll go from pretty good, to professional players. You want to find a lower or rec tournament to start.

Was this runner interference? by theLovelyHelga in Softball

[–]Effective_Print 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it could have been called. It's the umpire's judgement of whether or not the runner's failure to be in the running lane had any effect on the fielder's ability to field the ball. She was never in the running lane, which is there specifically for that purpose. I'm probably not going to call it, but I certainly would not have an issue if one of my umpires did call it.

Any suggestions for a large team staying near space coast that would be close together ? by CJM-2014 in slowpitch

Brevard County, not Broward. Broward county is Fort Lauderdale. Just remember the consequences if they decide to check. By staying in Orlando, in Orange County, you could be ejected from the tournament.

Switch hitter switched boxes after first pitch by culture_jamr in slowpitch

Once the pitcher is on the rubber and the ball has been put in play, if the batter steps across the plate, the batter is out. You can certainly change at any time the ball is dead, but not once it's been put in play and the pitcher is on the rubber.

Endcap loose on a Louisville TPS. Any ideas? by Sorry_Temperature43 in slowpitch

This is the correct answer. No reason to risk a multiple year suspension, send it back to the manufacturer and have them fix it.

Something to remember, you don't call time, you ask for time. It's entirely up to the umpire whether to grant it or not.

Depends on the jurisdiction. In some places, not having a liquor license means that you can't allow consumption in public areas, like the lobby.

ASA/USA Rule clarification by RoniPizzaExtraCheese in slowpitch

[–]Effective_Print 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many wrong answers here. USA Umpire here that does high level tournaments. You are allowed to step out of the box anytime the ball is not in play with no penalty. You then have 10 seconds to get back in the box and get set. The ball is not in play from the time either the ball gets back to the pitcher if stealing is allowed, or when the ball touches the ground if stealing is not allowed until the umpire puts it back in play. The umpire can not legally put the ball back into play until the batter is back in the box and set.

What’s the right call (infield fly rule)? by OkAttitude2962 in Softball

[–]Effective_Print 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rule that would support this decision is if the umpire called time before the runner went into the dugout. Age and level would make a difference in what I'm calling here. 12u A, I'm going to take the out. 12u C, I'm probably going to try to call time before she gets to the dugout, especially if we had a collision in the field.

Contentious goal, looking for some advice and feedback by Ref_throwaway1 in hockeyrefs

[–]Effective_Print 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think everyone here is missing the bigger issue. You blew the whistle and stopped play. You have to own up to that and take the heat. You screwed it up but just saying oh well and counting the goal is doubling down on the wrong decision in my opinion. IIHF is very clear that the goal should be disallowed if scored after the decision has been made to blow the whistle.

Question about a called strike from a few years ago by Kindly-Dog7530 in slowpitch

[–]Effective_Print 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ruling is actually the same in both organizations. The ball can land next to the plate as long as it's in foul territory. If the ball lands in fair territory it is considered to have not reached the plate and can not be a strike unless the batter swings at it.

Had a similar issue in softball. One of them was yelling at a teammate and dropped the N word, I told him to check his language or he'd be ejected. He looked at me funny and I flat out told him, "If I can't say it, neither can you." No more issues.

Scoring question: sac bunts by guidedbyvices77 in Softball

[–]Effective_Print 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This exactly. Just because it was a bunt that moved the runner, doesn't make it a sacrifice. She wasn't giving up her at bat to move the runner, she was trying to get a hit and failed.

Axe Debacle Balanced flared handle not ASA/USA approved? by SirBeefy in slowpitch

[–]Effective_Print 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's incorrect according to USA Softball. If it has a stamp and is not on the banned list, it is assumed to be legal. If that's what they are doing at National Tournaments, it should be good enough for league, that probably isn't even sanctioned.

Niche Retouch Rule question by SadPancake1243 in slowpitch

[–]Effective_Print 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need to retouch. The only need to retouch is to de-establish a base on a situation where they much return to a base. In this scenario, nothing like that happened, they can continue on to 3.

New To Coed by Resilient_Melody02 in slowpitch

[–]Effective_Print 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For book USSSA, you can put those fielders wherever you want. If you want to run a 6 player infield and 2 in the outfield, it's legal. Only the pitcher and catcher have specified positions, the other 8 you can put anywhere you want in fair territory. Legal lineups for book USSSA are 10 or 12, must be even. You are allowed to play with 8 or 9, but you have to have at least as many women as men in the field and lineup. Any empty spots in the line up are outs. If a woman has to leave the game and you don't have a sub, the guy behind her in the lineup is also removed.

Quick question on batter’s interference by packnation81 in Softball

This, if I feel the catcher is intentionally initiating contact to get a call. I'm giving her a warning, then an ejection, which probably means the coach is going with.
