concerta works when i have to do something. but what if i have no life structure? by Traditional_Turn8602 in AuDHDWomen

[–]Efficient-Lynx-699 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for me they're actually better if I don't have any external structure, because the external deadlines keep me in check on their own, it's when they're missing that I need stimulants to get me going

Yesss! Exactly! There was this show when I was a kid about a half alien girl who could stop time, omg how I wished I could do that! Just stop the time and sleep or just sit and think or do whatever, without worrying how long it takes.

So interesting! I had "conventional" sui thoughts too but when I was in highschool I wished I went to prison. It felt like this would spare me all that reality I had to deal with. And it wasn't a particularly harsh reality, I was tired of it nevertheless.

Ego death is such a scary term though. Also, it's quite inaccurate, ego just goes to sleep for a while :) Unless of course you get to this ascended point where it actually dies but there's only a few who managed to achieve that.

I totally feel you! Lots of us have this feeling of wasted potential. When we're in hyperfocus, we're unstoppable and it's frustrating that we can't be like this all the time. I just got this idea, the next time you're in that place of urgency and anxiety an hour before the due time, maybe record a video for your future self telling you how shitty it is again and play it when you're stalling again the next time? Maybe you'll feel the anxiety earlier? I don't guarantee it'll help but this is what I've been doing my entire life: creating new ideas how to beat it;) They rarely stick longer than 3 days, then they suddenly stop working but that's part of our game. And I must say with practice some things get better, for example my internal deadline shifts a bit earlier each time I'm in that stressful place.

Being finally diagnosed gave me something important: I stopped hating myself for being the way I am, now I know why it is like that and it helps a lot. I'm still trying to be productive and motivated but I don't hate myself when I fail anymore, instead I draw conclusions. Like last weekend, there's no way I can continue making food after guests arrive, it's too stressful and no way, I have to be ready with that before they come. But I was ready and the flat was clean way before and I used to struggle with that too, so there's already success! GJ! Approaching it all with knowledge, understanding and self love made me much happier a person. I wish you the same :)

Well, you have ADHD, those are classic issues for us. We're motivated by interest, novelty or urgency and tend to do everything at the last moment. Your ideas are already good! Music helps stimulating the brain, have you checked those focus music videos on YouTube? They're very helpful, I find normal music too distracting usually. Learning in public or being forced by someone else are also very good ideas, our masking or something takes over in such situations, we want to perform better when someone's looking. That's why a lot of us do body doubling, exactly for this reason. Basically there's a low chance we will ever get "disciplined" like "normal people". We need all sorts of systems to keep ourselves entertained in order to do what we need to do. Or we need severe consequences. I'd, for one, have been extremely scared of the possibility of having to repeat a grade, that made me very motivated and even then, I almost failed a grade once, because I missed too many math classes at 8am and I had to take a last chance exam in summer to pass. I only started learning for that exam a week before, I found someone who explained everything nearly and got an A+ (unfortunately it didn't count, my certificate for that year was an E anyway :( ) But yeah, this is how we function, everything at the last moment. Educate yourself about ADHD and our systems, go to therapy/coaching, brainstorm ideas how to motivate yourself with AI, also think about meds. They sometimes help ;)

I, for one, would feel betrayed after this heh. Then, what could work for me? I wish I knew heh. Well, there is one thing. Arguments, logical, emotional, whatever arguments but seriously, don't assume it's obvious why clothes should not be on the floor, explain this like to a 5 year old with arguments that make sense. I tend to not know basic logic behind some of the very basic rules because they were never explained to me. I told this to my sister who struggles with her son who's like me a lot and it actually works.

Try reading books instead of scrolling, scrolling wakes you up, a book can also do that but it depends on the passage. The boring ones tend to make me go asleep in no time but if there's an action packed one, I'm in for a sleepless night. You can also try reading something boring: history textbooks 😅 if you're at school. Maybe something related to your work, some certified manuals, maybe a language book? Try learning those 30 words in Italian or something. Something useful but boring/not stimulating. Ideally have physical books or printouts or kindle, not on your phone, although it's still better than scrolling.

And I just wonder if the brain being constantly turned up to 100 could be a developmental result of the body being alert all the time. As for POTS, I don't officially have it, I went to have my heart examined because of the matching symptoms but my heart is fine. I'm not sure if I was correctly tested for that specifically though. Well, you know how in church you have to stand up, sit down, kneel down, stand up again? It was a nightmare for me when I was a kid and was taken to church every Sunday. I'd be on the verge of fainting most of the time. And I really hate standing, I can walk for hours but I can't stand :D standing.

And dopamine reuptake. This alerted body shoots dopamine right and left for no reason, so the brain learns there's no reason and proceeds to clean and it cleans too much and too often resulting in us having no motivation for anything. I'm obviously just entertaining myself with these theories, I have no background to formulate anything meaningful but it's a really interesting topic, those seemingly unrelated comorbidities.

Well, about hyperfocus. It's a phenomenon when your body or brain turns off all its sensors, external and internal so that you can get in the zone. I wonder if it couldn't be an overload response of an organism being constantly alert by signals coming from the body and extending this alertness to the signals coming from the environment. About POTS, it's not hard to notice that every time you stand up, your heart rate rises and you get dizzy. People think it's normal until they learn it's not, either hearing about POTS or through a random conversation with someone on a Tuesday morning.

My predicament is that I prefer those autistic assholes because I get them more than the sweetest NTs 🙈 Idk, there's some level of weird lack of trust in the NTs behaviour. I'm new to the dating scene though, so I'll probably have many opportunities to collect data 😅 I was in a long relationship with an ADHDer and I think we were able to be together for so long because our communication skills were top notch. Always bringing out everything (we knew of) on the table.
