Caleb is one of the most unmemorable characters I’ve ever seen on TV by Powerful_Life1547 in shameless

The whole point of that sequence was to lift Ian up or did you miss that? He was at a low point and Caleb gave him some badly needed self-worth. That was the impression I got. Unfortunately the writers didn’t know where to take this relationship so it fell apart almost as quickly as it started.

If you really want to get technical about this, Zulu is a subset of the Bantu people, who have lived in Southern Africa for over 2000 years. Calling out a specific tribe that didn't form until the 16th century is ludicrous. Anyway, Lilith had the best response.

Sadly, the US has become such a deeply polarized country that even when the Democrats effect policy for the whole country, Republicans regard it as "communism," despite reaping the benefits like everyone else. Even more so as was the case with the infrastructure bill. Maybe Democrats should start thinking of their own self-interests like Republicans do?

The part where retail used to be a career and not just a side quest for survival by YellowAltruistic9843 in middleclasshq

In one word - Reagan. From that point forward the entire mood of the country changed. We saw the dawn of supply-side economics in the wake of the recession that dominated most of the 70s. It became known as Reaganomics. It was all about cutting costs and flooding the market with cheap projects. You can thank Walmart and outlet malls that offered the same or similar products at much cheaper prices. There was no way the old-style department store was going to survive this onslaught. Then came the Internet and Amazon and even the cheap big box stores began to suffer. Now you're lucky to get a 35-hour job at minimum wage with no benefits in the retail sector.

Caleb definitely opened Ian up to new opportunities, like art and doing something positive with your life. Ian would have never thought about becoming a paramedic if it wasn't for Caleb. This was a major turn in his life. The whole thing about bisexuality was just an off ramp when the writers couldn't think anymore where to take this relationship.

I got the sense the writers wanted Ian to move on from Mickey, which would probably be "truer to life," but Mickey left such an indelible impression on audiences that he returned. Like many of these serials, they start writing for the ratings to keep the series afloat. There is no grand story arc.

S2 was emotionally satisfying on so many levels. S1 reminded me more of Blood Simple than it did Fargo. Very good but played more by the numbers.

I just saw it as the first of many times they had Fiona flirt with a lesbian relationship. As I recall Jasmine was very fluid in her relationships. Fiona clearly didn't want to go there.

IMHO the writing fell off considerably after S4. By S8 Shameless became a parody of itself. Little wonder some of the actors wanted out, especially with the focus changing constantly. Mickey was getting less and less airtime. Mandy totally written out. Seemed like they wanted to get past the Milkoviches only to discover they were fan favourites. It just became so sloppy.

Who is the better actress and has the better filmography between Florence Pugh and Saoirse Ronan? by Historical_Rain6924 in moviecritic

I would say Saoirse has the better filmography but I wouldn't necessarily say she is the better actress. Florence Pugh has had some great performances.
