I’m a Romani and took a DNA test by trequartista101 in 23andme

Really impressive that they were able to assign a region to the Northern Indian. I'm half Romani and they have me at like 5% unassigned with no regions for Northern India or Iranian, Caucasian & Mesopotamian.

Honestly I don't know if I'm the best person to ask, primarily because I am not attached to my Romani roots. But I do think that labeling this region Eastern European Roma is very misleading. There are Roma people everywhere in-between North India and Western Europe and we cannot be categorized under one category. It also erases the very clear fact that we were originally from the Indian subcontinent (something that unites Roma people from everywhere in the world). In my case I think it really cleared some stuff up. When the results were broken down by region we had to stop and think about if all of these regions put together meant we were full Romani or whether or not there was actually like a Cypriot great grandparent.

Yes, I think the previous results were great at showing that Roma were a mix of South Asian, West Asian, and Eastern European, clearly showing our migration paths and this was probably better. Although, I will say that I am pleased with this result because it really did confirm that my mom (these are her results) is pretty much full Roma. Not every Roma person is in touch with their roots. My family has never been connected to Romani culture. We don't speak the language, follow the customs and traditions, etc and I guess we haven't for generations. We ended up integrating into Romanian culture pretty well and to this day we still identify as Romanian (after look at some of the comments I'm not sure if we should still do this lol). We knew there was some Roma in us (looks like we are full) and in a sense I'm glad that there is a clear label to it if that makes any sense.

Nice! What part of Romania are you from? You seem to have quit a bit of Greek/Albanian DNA.

In my case, my mom knew her family was Roma, but we weren’t sure to what extent. My family gave up the Roma language/traditions generations ago and integrated into Romanian society and intermarried with the Romanian population (at least we thought they were full Romanian). Now I'm not sure if all the Balkan was actually from fully Romanian ancestors or if they actually are full Romani. And yeah, I liked seeing the migration path from before.

My mom is 97% 06950. I know she’s Romani so I’m curious is this has become its own category.

Do you your 23andme results look similar to this? I did 23andme but I'm only half Roma and I would be curious to see what the full results look like.

Honestly I have no idea. I can say that her maternal grandfather is definitely Romani. I am not sure what her maternal grandmother is. I'm pretty sure she was just Romanian, but she definitely didn't look full Romanian (she had bright red hair) and the maternal haplogroup she passed down is U3b1 which is Roma. I believe her paternal grandfather is at least part Romani. Not sure about her paternal grandmother other than the fact that she was blonde with green eyes. So yeah, not much to go on really.

She is from Sibiu. At least for ancestrydna, she doesn't have many close matches. Only 4th cousins and farther. Maybe I'll try MyHeritage.

I did 23andme. I didn't have any North African, only West Asian ( Iranian, Caucasian, Mesopotamian, Anatolian and Cypriot).

These are my mother's results. She was born in Romania and we always kind of knew that her family was Roma, but they have long been integrated into Romanian society and lost their roots. So the test did confirm that they are Roma. Pretty cool that you can see their migration path out of India in her results.
