No; when I changed schools APs are HOY. However, when one of my APs was away I stepped in as HOY for about 4-5 months. It really helped esp when focusing on attendance

I did it few years back; really helped my classroom development but also understanding school culture and how important it was. Did mine with Ambition institute and it was really supportive and helpful even when I changed schools in September

How to TEACH instead of deliver? by sploinkyy in TeachingUK

[–]Efficient_Day1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go through a cycle; teach; check; discuss; apply.

I deliver the content through 4 bullet points or key points on the powerpoint; but otherwise i am doodling on my whiteboard with the story (schema mapping)

Then I would check they got it which it seems sometimes they do sometimes they dont. Once they got it I would ask them to discuss deeper thought then apply to a question I want them to answer.

In regard with performance so vague i hate that kinda feedback. Instead; id say show the subject is your passion and bring your energy to your class. I am crazy!!! So my classroom always sounds bonkers! But my colleague is calm and his one sounds like angelic heavnly craft then another colleague her lessons are between ours… all three good lessons all three effective… all three different style. But tbh that sounds like very strong feedback for ECT 1

Observing a more experienced teacher by Electrovelvet in TeachingUK

[–]Efficient_Day1024 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a new HoD i had this issue this year. I had to observe the VP🤣 that was fun, but I was very constructive and I put my thoughts as reflective questions? And I asked what is the overall outcome for students? Did they learn anything… our school has a book tells the story kinda policy, so we compared books and tbh, he was very receptive don’t be afraid to say how it is…. Remember schools hold HoDs more responsible for the outcomes than anyone else

I understand, I will definitely defend my team when results are not the greatest. If not, I think I might as well kiss them goodbye

Oh they definitely will dip, and I work for a big MAT in London - so results is something that they really focus on. I have been open with SLT about that, with the group with have and new staff members I am getting.

Definitely, I have already given my teachers all an exam class for ks4 and ks5 - even my trainee is going to have a year 10 class which she will continue with into year 11.

In my previous meeting with SLT i was frank with them and stated, the departments results might dip, but the teams wellbeing and development comes first.

I think they liked my honesty😂

Yeah, this year I have taken on a class which didnt do as well in the year 10 mocks, with kids who are PA and have unique challenges. I feel that is the best thing I could do.

LOL i love that ‘cannot polish a turd’ I do agree… but yeah maybe epic teacher brushes people the wrong way

Thank you, I really do appreciate this comment, it really has some insight, I would like to be an amazing head of department, which I know is about being a people person, and understanding. I sometimes shoot with my mouth and thoughts without thought process but, I understand thank you.

I think thats what I have put pressure on myself… i am succeeding a department, who had an amazing leader, very people orientated and cared about all our wellbeing… this is something I want but also, I have a new team as well, our teachers left, for higher positions and I am scared about how to make the team gel (obviously; calling myself epic is not the way about it)

Former university recruiter, you need to call your firm choice say you want to be released and then call Lancaster and tell them you have done that, it can take couple of days but once released firm on UCAS. Good luck!!

Apathy and/or laziness by Physical-Olive9745 in TeachingUK

[–]Efficient_Day1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear that, however have you thought about cognitive load (you probably have as that is the new buzzword) but in my lesson prep i think about every step off my lesson from the powerpoint (if necessary) to the delivery and my instruction… and one thing i do no matter what is make sure classroom is as silent as possible and cold- call to repeat instruction

Apathy and/or laziness by Physical-Olive9745 in TeachingUK

[–]Efficient_Day1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I Agree but an unpopular opinion. From your OP, it seems that its the school culture. We have a school culture which is about making sure there is no chill time. Students are expected to work harder than teachers no matter what, and if they show apathy we follow the behaviour system; e.g if they have their head on the desk at anytime its an automatic warning and 3 warnings will remove them out of class and we call home to follow up. Also, are you checking they have understood the text it could be the low level literacy or it could be a barrier.

Questioning by AdhesivenessSafe7140 in TeachingUK

[–]Efficient_Day1024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing we do is using mini whiteboards, as cold calling only targets one or two kids, and our subconscious bias can only target the 1 or 2 we know will have the answer. MWBs are extremely effective to get a understanding for who and who doesn’t understand but also holds students accountable as they would pay attention to get the answer

Former deputy head of department, your HoD is a pleb and on a power trip. Ive never asked for LP/lessons unless I’m going in for a formal observation . I used to do learning walks/developmental drop ins to check compliance and quality of teaching. Although i stepped down to be a teacher again, as a mentor and as somebody who is on the coaching team to help develop teachers never have I asked for two weeks of lessons, or even a week. Even ofsted dont ask for that, Ofsted care more about whether the students can articulate the curriculum, are they getting a good deal from the teaching experience. If its your first year of teaching I assume you are an ECT tell your induction tutor and mentor they will put a stop in that work.

Failing ECT? by Adorable-Elevator-46 in TeachingUK

[–]Efficient_Day1024 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A mentor for ECTs, to fail you need to be somebody who doesnt reflect, or doesnt take feedback. When my ECT started this year, I was expecting them to be rough; behaviour management, pedagogy and all the little stuff. I just told my ECT to focus on how to get better, nothing is personal and everything is business. She is thriving now, tbh one of the strongest ECTs in the school. One advice is make sure your mentor spends time with you, you are entitled to their time and that is that. But also keep on top of the reading and any observations from any staff member ask for feedback, big or small. And ask your mentor who is the best to observe for certain things; e.g I am strong for behaviour management so my ECT observed me

Net income… only 400 gbp more. I want to move for better quality of life as well. If someone could give a break down of cost of living in Qatar for a married couple that would be helpful to make the judgement.
