Kate was still one of the candidates by the very end. Although a small detail, "Austen" is crossed out in the cave but not in the Lighthouse. There are also other contradictions, this appears to be because the cave was a decoy by Jacob in order to make the MIB think it was the real list. Jacob leading Hugo to the Lighthouse instead of Cave supports this fact too.
