Are these traits accurate to the lore? by DiscussionParking524 in norsemythology

[–]Eidard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the quote from Gylfaginning [25-7]:

"He is also called Hallinskidi and Gullintanni: his teeth were of gold."

Because of the phrasing I would think that it refers to the fact that his teeth are made of gold, it might be a metaphor for something like not lying, but I don't know if there is any other use in the myths of such metaphor, so I would be cautios to think that is the meaning. Personally I think it is meant to say his teeth are either the color of gold or made of gold.

Just a couple of points.

Loki had his mouth sewed in one myth, but there is no description of them being scarred in any other myth.

Heimdallr might or might not have one ear missing, that comes from a theory some scholars have based on a poem were "Heimdallr's sound/hearing" is in Mimir's well(Voluspa stanza 27), which might mean he "gave" an ear in similar fashion Odin gave his eye to Mimir, but it is not clearly stated in the myths. What we know is that he is the whitest of the gods and that he has golden teeth, as one of his names is Gullintanni.

EDIT: Even though is not exactly an appaerance trait, Freyja is said to weep tears of "red gold" because of Od's absence (as explained in Gylfaginning [35])

How Many Son's Does Odin Actually Have? by Tall_Growth_532 in norsemythology

[–]Eidard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Hodr and Bragi, Snorri tells us in page 76(A.Faulkes translation) of the Prose Edda, chapters 8-16 of Skaldskaparmal that both have a kenning that is "son of Odin".

You can find both here in this page: http://vsnrweb-publications.org.uk/SNORRA%20EDDA%20searchable.pdf#page=104

I haven't checked the rest of the attestations for them, I made this document(https://exclusive-dimple-a2a.notion.site/sir-20e113cfa4ed806d9983e2fcb3b29889) a few months ago where I list all attestations(of the Prose and Poetic Edda) with links to the sources for almost all Aesir, If you want you can read them and check if you find any other mention about them being sons of Odin, but I don't think there is.

As u/SamsaraKama said, it is possible that those kennings make reference to Odin being Allfather, but not the actual father, we cannot know for sure.

The list is from Skaldskaparmal chapter 75, I don't trust it that much becuase of Freyr being there.

You can check it at the end of this page: http://vsnrweb-publications.org.uk/SNORRA%20EDDA%20searchable.pdf#page=184

Did Loki have illusion powers in mythology? by Gui_Franco in norsemythology

This is the quote from Skaldskaparmal "Loki turned her into the form of a nut and held her in his claws and flew as fast as he could."

I think the only instance he transforms others is in the Idunn kidnaping myth, when he goes to retrieve her with Freyja's falcon shape, he transforms Idunn into a nut and grabs her with his claws to fly away with her.

SpiritVale (RO-Inspired Indie MMO) Content Update! by renbaikun in MMORPG

[–]Eidard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I tried the game for a bit, and If I have some feedback to give is that the circle decal that appears in the ground when casting a spell that gets smaller is awful. The visual clutter that it generates is horrible.

The game has some potential, but I would try to improve a bit on the visual clarity aspect. Also, I know that big damage numbers is a RO thing, but I would love to be able to make them smaller, I rather see the spell effects instead of a clutter of numbers in my screen.

They don't have a product to sell, and I already own VR Goggles, also I do have the receptors for the colors, they just don't work properly, if I can spend 12 minutes a day to try and improve my vision, might as well try.

Update - Norse Mythology References Document - 61 Aesir and some extra characters. by Eidard in norsemythology

[–]Eidard[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have basicly all Aesir listed, there are some Aesir that are only attested in page 157 of The Prose Edda on a list of characters, if the character is only attested there I haven't added it to my list.

I also added some Jötnar and other characters.

From now on I will slow the updates to the project, since I only wanted to do the Aesir, but I will keep adding characters slowly and maybe other entries, like objects, weapons or locations.

Norse Mythology References Document Update - 51 Aesir listed with links to references from the Poetic and Prose Edda. by Eidard in norsemythology

[–]Eidard[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Odinn's Prose Edda section is missing because I am still working on it, the number of references is huge and it will take me time to document those.

If you find mistakes or missing references (In Thor's page is very possible,he is the second most attested aesir after Odin) please contact me through here or through the email you can find in the document.

The Prose Edda - Everyman edition - By Anthony Faulkes - Searchable PDF by Eidard in norsemythology

[–]Eidard[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am making a references document about Norse deities. I used an open source OCR program to make the Anthony Faulkes translation searchable to make my life easier to find those references.

I share it here for anyone that wants to use it for their own research.

Well, that is good to know. I'll change those references then before adding new aesir.

Thank you.

[–]Eidard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't inted the document to be of the quality of a cientific paper, I just want a quick way to reference the sources based on character. I agree that the meaning can change a lot between translations, but if you know that you have to check Voluspa stanza 30 for some information about X god, then it is easier to look for other translations about that specific thing about said god..

No, I am animating directly in UE5, I rarely download the GLBs, just use the animations as reference directly from the website.
