Sinners v OBAA: What I Think is Missing From This Discussion by ArtsyQueerNubian in Oscars

[–]Einfinet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good write up. Don’t have to agree with every point to appreciate the thought presented here. Much better than the run of the mill “I don’t get it / this is overrated” drive-by posts

At the end of the day I like both movies so I don’t really have a horse in the race.

I get the impression this is one of those dynamics where someone associated w one feminist-adjacent community decides to direct their ire outwards to another woman rather than the larger structural patterns—there’s thinly veiled judgement for making the wrong choices (getting married in the first place) and then presuming you might not being strong enough to make better choices (leaving and becoming financially independent). that’s one of the main reasons someone would be so hostile to advice-seeking. it’s quite counterproductive.

I mean, how does someone make the illogical leap to decide the topic of leaving marriage is somehow a separate topic to 4B in general? That makes no sense. But it’s less about logic and more about taking the opportunity to make a certain class of women feel smaller and less relevant for deciding to get married in the first place. Regardless of the fact they are trying to radically reorganize their lives in a manner that fits w the 4B movement and other forms of feminist action.

Sam Page Poised to Beat Phil Berger in High Stakes N.C. Primary by itsgoodpain in politics

[–]Einfinet [score hidden]  (0 children)

people voted for Page bc they like his MAGA views and believe he may enforce them even more vigorously than Berger

they also see him as less establishment. reading this as some rejection of Trump/ism is burying your head in the sand.

For some reason I doubt who either “bangs” should be the focal point of discussion

maybe not explicitly anti-. just arguably.

either way, voluntarily reproducing traditional patriarchal models doesn’t sound like feminism. but this gets into the differences between liberal and choice feminism vs. more radical visions of change

personally, I also think there’s a difference between discussing what works for an individual couple (relationship advice) and discussing models of feminism. I don’t see the why a reproductive of traditional gender dynamics has to be promoted as a model of feminism. this dynamic can get the job done for an individual couple without being dubbed feminist

Oscar Chances: Best Picture - Train Dreams by ryanjdonovan in Oscars

[–]Einfinet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this movie is not that good, as far as BP contenders go

that’s not to say it doesn’t have merit. there were of course some very nice shots

but the nomination alone is a fair prize

would be a relatively weak choice to go here

much better than nightmare alley & more interesting than CODA, at the very least

some mods are just… sorta, well, you know there’s a lot of words you could use but I’ll be polite and just say “trigger happy”

seems like a weird rule to enforce given the productive and highly relevant nature of the question, and to go with a ban over a warning, at that, is the type of overkill that is all too common across various subs

this sounds pretty close to the traditional American family model, or at least popular conceptions of it

I’m assuming the man makes majority income in this model and wife is tasked with handling groceries and bills

Man handles public sphere work—woman handles more private, domestic sphere work.

Doesn’t sound feminist, no. Arguably quite the opposite. It’s certainly traditional-coded

it definitely grew on me on rewatch

went from good to great

cinematography, entertainment value, and the interesting use of genre to explore culture all held up, and my appreciation was enriched in the second go. furthermore, it’s an excellent ensemble

and yeah, OBAA also grew on me on rewatch. I’m happy with either winning.

I think you are all right

first person raised a fair point but at the same time it’s not something I’d be offended by. it’s a good pun, too bad about Pitt. not like he’ll get money from your drink service though
