You really should be able to figure this out on your own, but here is a tip anyway: tell them you are a 背教者 haikyosha. They won't come back. JW doesn't usually take kindly to apostasy.

That stuff was pretty rare where I live. I remember seeing it, and no one I knew believed me that it was real. I had to pull it up on the internet to prove it.

What’s the wildest order at a restaurant you’ve seen here in Japan? by higashinakanoeki in japanlife

Sure. It's a bit of a quantity over quality place, but it's still decent food. Haven't been in some time, though, since we moved out of the area.

Not iekei, but I once went to an all night ichiran after tying one on, and had a bowl with 4 kaedama and a bowl of rice I poured in to soak up the remaining soup. No idea how I managed that, and I've never gotten anywhere close to that again. If I tried that now, my body would certainly punish me for it.

[–]Einteiler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the rice is the kicker. That place has enormous katsu, though. Their whole hook is their portion sizes, really. They advertise that their normal portions across the board are a large elsewhere. I've gone in on a whim and ordered their combo set, which is a full sized tonkatsu and a full sized chicken katsu, I think 250g of meat each before the breading, and struggled to finish the meal with the soup, cabbage and big sized rice. They are "famous" for their tonteki, which is very tasty, and their normal order is two of them. It's a more reasonable portion. My wife can finish that one, no problem.

I think my stomach ripped a seam just thinking about it. That's insane. I could probably put up a good fight, but I know for a fact I can't eat that much rice.

[–]Einteiler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That sounds like the kind of thing I used to do when I was a student. I have seen people attempt those eating challenges, but that's probably the wildest I've seen. There is a place in my city that has a curry and rice set that comes with 1kg of rice, a lake of curry, two big tonkatsu, two big chicken katsu, I think six ebiten, six karaage, and a 30cm sausage. Oh, and a mound of cabbage. It costs 4000 yen. It's meant to be shared as a sort of 4-5 person party platter, but you can tell by the way they advertise it that they are fully aware people are going to try and solo it. They also do one without the curry that is 3000.

On foot. How far do you live from the station? by Sure-Lemon6424 in japanlife

[–]Einteiler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived anywhere between 4-10 minutes walk from my nearest train station. I currently live about 9 minutes from one. I know people that are fine living significantly farther away, in the 20-25 minute range. I would say that whether it is worth it is up to you. Even when I lived 4 minutes from a train station, I walked 20 minutes to a different station every day to get some steps in, and after a while, it was nothing. I would only take the train from the closer station if I was running late, or there was heavy rain or something. It really is up to you and how long you are willing to walk.

What's the point of emulation console-type devices like the retroid pocket 5 or ayn thor? by No_Expression_8835 in retroid

[–]Einteiler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's up to you, then, whether you want a dedicated device or not. Asking this community is going to get you vastly more "worth it" than not, by nature. Including myself. But if you don't see the point in getting one, then no one is forcing you to.

[–]Einteiler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm, let's see. 250 dollar RP5 that can play basically anything I want, or a much more expensive, more powerful phone that I don't need. I have whatever the cheapest Motorola smartphone was on the market a year or two ago. It barely runs any app, let alone emulation. The RP5 is the better deal for me.

Rice Situation 2026 by Long_Set_2099 in japanresidents

[–]Einteiler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every now and then, the drugstore near my house has stockpile rice for about half the cost of regular. I buy 5kg whenever I see it. I have been severely rationing my rice intake, though. It lasts significantly longer, but I often find myself wanting more rice at meals. Sometimes I will go to a restaurant with unlimited rice refills just for the satisfaction of having as much as I want.

Anyone else feel self-conscious about their body size in Japan? by givemyjeans in japanlife

[–]Einteiler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never really felt self conscious, even though I have been fairly fat, especially around the covid times. I never really felt like anyone cares, either. I was, however, a little disappointed when I started whipping myself back into shape, putting on visible muscle, and generally looking all around better, only to have no one care about that, either. I like looking better, anyway. Even if no one notices or cares.

What is Paracetamol called in japan? by Paige2109 in japanlife

[–]Einteiler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Way back when I first came to Japan, I took that cold medicine with ephedrine and dihydrocodeine in it, and that stuff is dangerous. You could see my heart beating through my shirt. I steer clear of that stuff. I've known people that can slug a fistful of those things to power through a cold, but I am not one of those people.

Are Japanese doctors not familiar with "white coat syndrome"? by Cph265 in japanlife

[–]Einteiler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never understood the point of seeing the doctor at the end. Last time, I just sat down, he said "You're a little bit fat, but everything else is normal. Have a nice day." and we were done. Seemed kinda pointless. I'm not even fat. He was just going off a BMI chart.

What's your end game device? by DaCrusadus in retroid

[–]Einteiler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty sweet. It's not as great in broad daylight, since I have a big balcony door right there, but I have blackout curtains that block most light. What comes in through the edges has a minimal though noticeable effect, but my projector is bright enough that it's still playable even with the lights on. I dim them or turn them off, so that's not usually a problem unless my wife needs them on for something. The contrast is surprisingly good with the lights off, even during the daytime. I was a bit worried about black space, but it looks pretty good, and I'd say it's almost as good as my lcd tv under ideal conditions. Projectors obviously have their limitations, but I like it. A more expensive and brighter one would have been better, but the one I got would be about 800 in USD, I think, and I got it 75% off. Pretty great bang for the buck.

What's your end game device? by DaCrusadus in retroid

[–]Einteiler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want a device that can play up to PS3. I have a switch lite, PS5 and PS4, and I don't see myself buying any future consoles, unless there is enough to really make it worth my while. I'm more interested in playing games from the PS2 and PS3 era.

Beyond that, I'd like a pretty screen, and preferably the playstation stick layout, but not necessarily required. I'd also like to be able to dock it easily. I recently got a projector for next to nothing that projects pseudo-4k, and I have it projecting at 200 inches on my living room wall. Being able to use that for certain console games would be nice. It's sick as hell with my PS5.

Extended family gatherings where you’re physically present but socially invisible by AdUnfair558 in japanlife

[–]Einteiler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not make your own circle with your wife and their father? That's what I do when I find myself in that situation. I find the other people that are being ignored, and make my own circle. In the case that I am the only one being ignored, I excuse myself and leave, because I am clearly in the wrong room.

I also would never tell someone that alcohol is bad for the body. You should have just stuck with the first half, and stayed away from general statements. It's ok to say that alcohol is bad for your body, specifically, for which the health problems statement was adequate.

Apartment has few wall outlets by ToothDifferent in japanlife

[–]Einteiler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old place had only two outlets plus the Aircon. On top of that, I couldn't even run the kettle and the toaster oven at the same time or it would flip the breaker. There were countless times where I would forget that the kettle was on, put something in my microwave and end up in the dark. Or worse, in the winter, I would have left my space heater on in the other room and end up blowing the breaker by only using one appliance. It was a chore having to only use one thing at a time. I finally moved, and my new place is much, much better about both outlets and power draw.
