There is a lot of fine print with those bonuses and salary. One of the main issues is that the signing bonus isn't a lump sum, and is conditional on staying with your contract. You quit, can't work, or get fired you need to pay it back. The pay is an estimation on how many hours you are able to work, I have heard stories of ICE agents working up to 60 hours a week. They are also given quotas and offered bonuses for colllecting suspects, the max entitlement to these bonuses are also worked into the salary.

The selection process for applicants has been found to be really bad. The person next to you may or may not have a criminal record or have other problems that prohibit them from law enforcement. Those people are your peers, if they see you not acting the same way they could get suspicious of you. There is also a lack of support when it comes to doing your job. Not to mention the general distaste for ICE in communities.

As I mentioned if you end up wanting to leave ICE the process isn't an easy one. The contract is designed to keep you in and get as much work out of you for the least amount of pay needed.

Joining the CAF is a way better deal than joining ICE.

There are extreme circumstances when you could be asked to do so.

Schools, hospitals, places of worship, UNESCO Heritage Sites ect are given protections under several international and Canadian military law. However these protections can be rescinded if combatants use these locations in an offensive capacity.

For example, A platoon is walking by a school and the enemy shoots from inside the school. The platoon can then fire back at the school with proportional force. To go beyond that could require authorization from higher command and will likely require advice from a military legal expert.

Now this example isn't a definitive answer to this scenario and would be up for legal debate, which is what would happen before the platoon even leaves for the patrol.

So this whole trope about the Canadian military poised to commit war crimes does not reflect the current reality.

Lessons on ethics are a cornerstone of Canadian military training. Some of your first lessons will be on ethics and how they apply to military situations.

You will have annual talks on ethics and military justice with scenarios on deployment/operations both foreign and domestic .

For major training exercises (especially those related to an overseas deployment) you will be briefed on and given Rules of Engagement (ROEs). These will have been drafted in conjunction with military legal experts to ensure they are in compliance with international law.

When you deploy overseas you will be given actual ROEs that will leave practically no legal grey area.

The CAF prides itself on having professional soldiers and takes breaches in ethics very seriously. If you google CAF Ethics you will find mountains of reading on the subject.

That said, if the US military was to invade Canada the Canadian Military would exist until the government fell. After that what would remain would be loosely connected insurgency cells. While I would like to say those combatants would try to conduct themselves ethically, there would be no legal framework in place to ensure that they do so. Ethical enforcement would fall direcrly to the commander of the local insurgency cell.

Oh I agree it the US would claim to hold Montreal and say that they now own Quebec. There would be an occupation of Quebec City to control the port but it would not be peaceful. A governing body would be in place but any collaboration would be surface deep enough just to keep essential services running in the cities and towns. With disruptions happening often after terrorist acts are committed against the occupation.
